Two Agencies Sell Empty Boxes to Benefit Children’s Charities

bawx_website

Rampant commercialism. Black Friday. Idiots fighting over TV sets at Walmart. Is anyone sick of the disgustingly selfish focus on commercialism? Barton F. Graf 9000’s Jerry Graf and TDA_Boulder’s Jonathan Schoenberg are. The two men who ran into each other at a recent industry event decided to do something about it.

The two agencies have launched Bawx, a site on which, well, you can buy boxes. But with a twist. The boxes are both toys for children and a means of raising money for children’s charities Blue Sky Bridge in Boulder and Charley Davidson Fund in Boston.

As explained on the site, “Consumerism is a bit out of control these days. Kids would much rather spend time with their friends and parents and a Bawx, than the latest technology. Ok, that is a complete lie, but maybe if they did have a Bawx they would spend more time with people, and a bit less time with pixels.”

It’s an admirable effort. All box manufacturing costs will be born by the two agencies and all proceeds will be donated to the charities. A range of boxes are available from $24.99 to $499.99. But, all the boxes are the same. It’s up to the buyer to decide how much they want to donate.

It’s really “The perfect holiday gift for the 2 – 61?2 year old who would rather play with the box than what’s inside.”

Bajibot Designs New Site for DJ Pierce’s Global Glue Project

We reported back in June, that former KBS+ executive creative director DJ Pierce had turned his attention to his Global Glue Project after announcing his resignation from KBS+ in May. It appears that the Global Glue Project is beginning to take off, with a new website designed and developed in collaboration with Bajibot.

In case you were wondering, the Global Glue Project is “A documentary series of couples around the globe that share their challenges and the glue that keeps them sticking together.” The idea is to create 56 Glue films, with four already complete. The series hopes to function to preserve the relationship role models that are becoming harder and harder to find. Think of Global Glue Project as the antidote to the revolving door relationships depicted in celebrity gossip culture. They describe their mission as being to “capture and share the secrets of healthy long-term relationships through interviews with real couples of all kinds, without any discrimination of race, sexual orientation, or religious affiliation.” I’m sure we’ll get a lot of snark about the this one from commenters, but I think Global Glue Project fills a valuable need for committed couples who want to stick together.

The project emphasizes the difficulties inherent in long term commitment, something that is rarely discussed. With so many examples of the disposability of relationships, and even marriages (think Kim Kardashian), we really need something like Global Glue Project. If you’re interested, you can read about the first four couples on the website, and watch their documentaries. The most impressive has to be Helen and Sydney, who have been married 70 years, and overcame the stillbirth of their first child.

The Global Glue Project, having completed four of its films, is currently looking for funding to complete the remaining 52. If you’d like to help out, or just learn more about the project, head on over to their Kickstarter page. The project will only be funded if they meet their $50,000 goal by January 18th. Once the project is funded, Global Glue Project plans to send its backers “one Glue Film a week for a year, prior to its release on our website.” Check out the above video for an overview of Global Glue Project, and head on over to the site for the full videos. With any luck, there will be weekly updates in the near future.

Will Instagram’s Direct Inbox Become the New Playground for Spam and Perverts?

For Instagram users like myself, today is a day of mixed blessings. Thanks to new features announced this morning, we can finally have private conversations in the app, but Instagram is also adding the ability for anyone to send you private photos. Anyone.

Like Facebook, Instagram Direct essentially routes private messages (which must include photos or videos) into two folders: One for people you're following and one for "Pending Requests" from people you're not following. And like Facebook's "Other" inbox, a horrifying den of iniquity in which angels fear to tread, the Pending Requests folder seems almost destined to become awash in spam and penis-sharing creepers.

Or as my writer friend Curtis Silver described it:

A few other observations from Twitter after today's announcement:

Sure, spam and perverts can already be found in droves on Instagram, but their ability to really bother users has essentially been limited to posting comments on your images. Now they'll be able to send you images directly, and if they limit their prurient activity to private messages, they might be harder for Instagram to find and purge.

Here's the extent of what Instagram has shared so far on this issue in its initial FAQ about Instagram Direct:

Can I use Instagram Direct to send posts to people I’m not following?

Yes, you can send a photo or video to anyone when you use Instagram Direct. If you send a post to someone who doesn’t follow you, your post will go to their requests queue. If someone accepts your request, your post will go to their direct posts the next time you share directly with them. Posts that stay in the requests queue may become unavailable.

How do I report a post that was sent to me or block someone from sending posts to me?

You can report abusive posts that are sent to you. If you don't want someone to send a post to you, you can ignore their post in your direct posts by tapping x or you can block that person.

Key safety tips for Instagram Direct

Ignore people you don’t want to hear from. If you want to ignore all messages from someone you follow, you can always tap the ". . ." in your direct posts  and select the option to Ignore All from that person.

Block people that bother you. If someone bothers you through messages or anywhere else on Instagram, use our blocking function so that that person can't view your photos/videos or search for your Instagram account. People aren't notified when you block them.

Report problematic content. You can report content that may be in violation of our policies directly from Instagram app, with our built-in reporting feature.

So obviously Instagram is prepared for an influx of unsavory messages, but it still seems the service is missing an option for those who don't want to be subjected to requests from any random person or bot. Or at the very least, the service could separate the "friend request" aspect from the image sharing itself, allowing you to scan your Pending Requests inbox in a public place without fear of your screen being filled with snapshots of "single ladies" and some dude's junk. UPDATE: The "Pending" queue only shows you a thumbnail of the user's profile photo, not of the photo he or she is trying to send you. So, for better or worse, you won't see what content the person is trying to send you until you accept their messages. You'll also see the user's Instagram ID and full name, which hopefully will give you enough context to decide whether to allow them into your inbox. In the Pending list, you can click a green check to allow direct messages from the user or click a red X to decline.

Once you allow messages from a user, you can later choose to "hide" their message, block the user, "ignore all posts from this user" or "report inappropriate." Here's a screenshot of your reporting options for inappropriate content:

Only Barbarian Group Could Make Intermodal Transportation Look This Cool

ge_intermodal.jpg

Intermodal transportation. Perhaps you’ve heard of it. More likely, you haven’t. But you know exactly what it is. It’s a shipping system that uses those big containers you see at various seaports that make their way from ship to shore to truck to train carrying contents that, ultimately, end up in your home. Like washing machines, jeans, beverages, light bulbs, refrigerators, computers and basically, well, most everything.

It’s called intermodal because the same container can be placed on a truck, a ship or a train. It’s a great way, and the main way, most everything makes its way around the world. It’s both mundane and really cool at the same time. Mundane in the sense that who really cares how my sweater travels from some factory in China to my closet in New York. Then again, just how the hell does my seater get from China to my closet without falling into the ocean or ending up ion the side of the highway?

Barbarian Group has given life to this “boring” mode of transportation for GE touting the brand’s trip optimizer system which helps all those containers move smoothly across the globe.

Working with British rocker Rueben Wu who captured organic terminal sounds at the CSX Intermodal Terminal in North Baltimore, the agency deftly crafted a branded video that’s actually interesting to watch…and listen to.

Facebook Takes on Snapchat With Instagram Messaging Service

Facebook was apparently hedging its bets in the background when it tried — and failed — to buy the ephemeral messaging service Snapchat. Today its prize 2012 acquisition, Instagram, announced that it’s launching its own take on a messaging service.

Instagram users can now send photos and videos directly to people who follow them. The sender and recipient can then converse in the comments underneath the piece of media, and push notifications containing the messages will appear if a user’s phone is locked. Media sent by people who users don’t follow will be sent to a “pending requests” box.

Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom said that users are effectively already using the service to communicate specific ideas with each other. He also observed that half of the app’s more than 150 million users open it daily, which sounded like a jab at other messaging services. Snapchat, for example, doesn’t disclose how many users it has.

Amazon’s (Still Illegal) Drone Spot Is One of Last Week’s Top Ads

Amazon claimed the No. 2 spot last week with its Prime Air video, demonstrating the the now infamous drone delivery system Jeff Bezos floated in his December 1 “60 Minutes” interview with Charlie Rose. The clip, which has been viewed more than 13 million times, features the borderline-absurd scenario of an Amazon mini-copter prototype latching onto a package at a fulfillment, center and transporting it to the steps of a customer’s home.

The company awaits FAA rule and regulation updates in order to put its plan into action. The Bezos-owned Washington Post reports that, due to current laws, the video couldn’t even be filmed in the United States, as commercial drones are not yet legal. The shooting locale has yet to be disclosed.

Not surprisingly, Kobe Bryant and Lionel Messi’s selfie showdown for Turkish Airlines debuts at No. 1 on the Viral Video Chart this week. While their first spot snapped up the top position around this time last year, the 18 million views pales in comparison with the 64 million the latest one has garnered.

JWT Nabs Puma Biz

puma

“Forever Faster.” Remember that mantra as it’s the 2014 tagline for Puma, which has now appointed JWT as its global creative agency in a move that will span North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia-Pacific and Middle East/African regions. In a statement, the sports/shoe/apparel brand’s CEO Björn Gulden says, “In JWT, we have found an agile agency with a global reach that understands the PUMA brand and culture. The team quickly proved that they could deliver on our new mission to become the Fastest Sports Brand in the World. Together we’ll craft a more nimble creative structure that will allow us to support all of the company’s sporting and lifestyle categories with a single consumer message and streamlined creative concept across territories.”

JWT New York will spearhead creative on the account, which was previously handled by Droga5. According to sources, BBH and Barton F. Graf 9000 were also in the pitch, which we hear JWT wasn’t initially invited to but eventually became a “dark horse.” Yet, “chemistry” worked out and due to touting a “small agency-style creative” at a network agency, which the brand didn’t expect, JWT won out thanks to a pitch led by the agency’s NY CEO Peter Sherman, North American CCO Jeff Benjamin and director of business development Emilie Vasu.

Spotify’s New Free Mobile Service Signals the Fate of the Music Industry

Spotify announced yesterday that its mobile listening service will be free to users who do not subscribe. This is a significant shift for the Swedish company, which had offered mobile on-demand listening to subscribers only. It has been using mobile convenience as bait to lure about six million subscribers into a monthly paid relationship.

Tablet listeners can now have the same free, ad-supported experience that’s available on the PC desktop. On mobile devices, users can get Spotify Shuffle, a Pandora-like service that lets users shuffle songs, based on a specific artist, or to shuffle among existing user playlists. This stops shy of mobile, on-demand music listening; there’s no way that music labels, which have invested in the company, will permit that for free.

Spotify’s hope is that the free mobile service will draw another six million people to try out the service and eventually splurge for a subscription to the on-demand version. The folks at Spotify have to be thrilled that the labels have finally come around to this way of thinking, even if it is only a partial solution for listeners.

Did Newsstand Sales Affect Time’s Choice for Person of the Year?

Did Time magazine pick Pope Francis as its Person of the Year because he’ll sell more magazines than Edward Snowden? That’s what some media outlets and Twitter users suggested Wednesday after the new pontiff beat out Mr. Snowden for the recognition.

Business Insider, for instance, wrote:

“Snowden, who appears in only a handful of photographs, has been covered to death, and is unpopular with very many people, is not likely to improve newsstand sales, especially at a middle of the road publication like TIME. Pope Francis, on the other hand, has an ready-built audience of 1.2 billion Catholics around the world, with early indications are that his popularity even leading lapsed Catholics to return to the pews, and many more people who are happy to commemorate exciting developments in the Vatican. In the realpolitik world of modern magazine publishing, these are factors that can’t be ignored.”
