Belgium Supports Winter Olympics Athletes With Eerie Dirt Snowboarding Video
Posted in: UncategorizedBelgium has never hosted the Winter Olympics. Why? The answer is simple. The country has no mountains. Well that hasn’t stopped the country from producing a World Champion snowboarder. And to celebrate that fact, BBDO Belgium created a TV spot with a group of snowboarders led by Seppe Smits, boarding across the flat landscape of Belgium.
It’s a great way to ruin your snowboard — they’re snowboarding on dirt — but it’s an inspiring message set to the tune of Jacques Brel’s Le Plat Pays (The Flat Land), a popular song in Belgium.

Belgian Olympic Committee: Sochi 2014
Posted in: Uncategorized
In Belgium we don’t need mountains to win a medal.
A Belgian city has never hosted the Winter Olympics. That makes perfect sense, because we don’t have any mountains. But we do have athletes with enough talent and determination to win a Winter Olympics medal, this year in Sochi. One of the athletes is snowboarder Seppe Smits, multiple World Championship medalist.

McGarryBowen Chicago is Back with More From ‘The Denskies’
Posted in: UncategorizedLast week, we introduced you to McGarryBowen’s new “Denskies” campaign for Sears, and it wasn’t pretty. The spots employed a tired “There’s a better way to…” gimmick and random offensiveness without any real humor attached. Now there’s a new spot in the campaign,”Chupacabra,” and it’s pretty much more of the same.
There aren’t any mouth-raping squirrels in “Chupacabra,” but there is a chupacabra. The Denskie patriarch accidentally beams the chupacabra into the house with a teleportation device he created to get products the family ordered there sooner (that’s the “There’s a better way…” tie in for this spot). What the husband, or any rational viewer, doesn’t expect is that the chupacabra isn’t bent on destruction but rather takes a fancy to Mrs. Denskie. (What is it with McGarryBowen, Sears and bestiality?) This ridiculousness is played up with the wife still deciding between Mr. Denskie and the chupacabra, in a “To be continued…” ending for the 1:10 spot. I’m not sure who decided this (or any of the “Denskie” spots) needed a sequel, as I can’t imagine anyone clambering for more after watching “Chupacabra.” Maybe it was just easier to run with this concept than to come up with a new, random idea incorporating zoophilia. Credits after the jump. continued…

Depressed About Having to Shave That Movember ‘Stache? Watch This and Feel Better
Posted in: Uncategorized
Dec. 1 will be a tough day for a lot of guys, including Dan. That Movember mustache, the object of so much spousal derision for weeks now, must come off. Shaving brand Harry's tries to lessen the blow in this amusing video from Droga5 in New York, in which a guy and his mustachioed, cool-but-not-cool alter ego come to terms with the day of reckoning in the morning mirror. Harry's is also going a step further by declaring Dec. 1 to be an invented holiday called "National Shave Day," and has built a whole nationalshaveday.com site to promote it. Sure, that may be (literally) bald-faced marketing opportunism, but it could help ease the grief for guys nationwide on Sunday—as Harry's is partnering with barbershops and boutiques nationwide to give out free shaves and limited-edition razors.

Kevin Garnett’s New Beats by Dre Ad Is Tough, Brave and Relentless
Posted in: Uncategorized
"Hear what you want" is the theme of this intense, nearly three-minute Beats by Dre spot starring Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Garnett, who's shown using the brand's wireless studio headphones to cancel out angry, often ugly catcalls from fans on game day. Haters viciously taunt him for being too old, at 37, to lead the team to a championship, and the racist epithet from a red-capped rowdy around the 55-second mark—he calls the power forward a "gorilla motherfucker"—is especially jarring. Aloe Blacc's uplifting, anthemic track "The Man" works well as a counterpoint, and the fact that Garnett and the Nets have stumbled badly out of the gate this season adds power and poignance. I'll be rooting for K.G. to tune out the static and make some noise the rest of the way.
UPDATE: R/GA did the creative on this, with Prettybird doing the production.

Yahoo Courts Katie Couric As Mayer Accelerates Turnaround Effort
Posted in: UncategorizedYahoo’s push to hire Katie Couric, who once earned as much as $15 million a year anchoring the “CBS Evening News,” signifies an accelerated drive by Chief Executive Officer Marissa Mayer to build content as more consumers turn to the Internet for television-style reporting.
Hiring Couric would give Ms. Mayer another recognizable name to draw viewers and advertisers as she tries to jump-start a turnaround. Since September, the CEO has brought aboard gadget reviewer David Pogue, political reporter Matt Bai, and editor Megan Liberman, all from the New York Times Co.
Ms. Mayer, CEO since July 2012, is striving to build a news business to make her site a stronger alternative to Google and Facebook for advertising dollars. Yahoo shares have surged more than 130% on her watch, with investors drawn by more than $5 billion in stock buybacks and its stake in Internet companies such as Alibaba Group, China’s online marketplace for everything from fruit to Boeing 737s.
‘Hunger Games’ Sequel Has $161 Million in Weekend Sales
Posted in: Uncategorized“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” the sequel about teens fighting to the death in a totalitarian world, took in $161.1 million in weekend cinema sales for studio Lions Gate Entertainment.
Walt Disney Co.’s “Delivery Man,” a comedy starring Vince Vaughn, was the only other new film in wide release, collecting $8.22 million to place fourth, Rentrak Corp. said yesterday in an e-mailed statement.
“Catching Fire” was “a bit light,” said Jordon Laycob, manager of the Marsico Flexible Capital Fund in Denver. “The real test will be how it holds up into next weekend.” He said the film’s gross was about $10 million short of the firm’s estimate.
The boss is back!
Thanks, Boss!
