Terrie Hall, Star of the CDC’s Anti-Smoking Ad Campaign, Dies at 53

Terrie Hall, who starred in Arnold's brutal national anti-smoking campaign for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, died this week in North Carolina. The image of Hall hiding the ravages of smoking-induced cancer with a wig, false teeth and a scarf is pretty harrowing, and the same can be said for her artificial voicebox. Those get used a lot in anti-smoking ads, but there's always something heartbreaking about them. I often wonder if people like Terrie are being exploited, if their real suffering should be harvested for a marketing effort, even one that's relevant to their condition. But the CDC says the campaign, called "Tips From Former Smokers," prompted 100,000 people to quit. "She was a public health hero," CDC director Dr. Tom Frieden said of Hall. "She may well have saved more lives than most doctors do." Hall was 53.

Seahawks Fans Get Louder, 49ers Fans Whine

While 49ers fans would prefer if the Seattle fanbase could keep the noise level down to polite golf claps and the occasional “Good job, sport,” Seahawks fans will continue to bring the noise.

After setting a world record for crowd noise Sunday night, and pissing off some 49ers fans in the process, Seahawks fans, aka the 12th man, are synonymous with the word “loud.” Hometown agency Wexley School For Girls and Pico Sound have embraced that identity with their new spot, entitled simply “Louder.” The :30 spot shows Seahawks fans raising the decibel level while 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick tries to call a play at the line of scrimmage, only to be forced to settle for a timeout due to the deafening noise. “Louder” concludes with the tagline “Bigger Faster Stronger Louder” and the hashtag #Louder. That hashtag should provoke enthusiastic responses from the Seahawks faithful, and its share of angry tweets from 49ers fans, who would prefer the hashtag #SettleDownPleaseIt’sGettingALittleTooNoisyAtThisFootballMatch.

As KSL Faces Bankruptcy, Former CEO Hank Cohen Starts New Media Shop

Hank Cohen has struck out on his own to launch a new media shop following the bankruptcy of the company he previously led, KSL.

Mr. Cohen, a 25-year media industry veteran who had been CEO of KSL, is setting up the new agency — named Windstar — under the umbrella of Intermedia Group of Cos, which already houses direct response, production and advertising groups. His goal is to service smaller marketers and challenger brands with media budgets between $10 million and $30 million.

He said he believes that by using that model, as well as a trading desk and barter operation, he can eventually grow the company beyond $700 million in billings. Mr. Cohen will run the company with Bob Yallen, president of Intermedia and a partner in the venture, as well as work with Intermedia’s operational resources, such as its CFO and HR lead.

One Publisher’s Social Media Strategy: Outright Rejection

Enamored with social media’s ability to funnel traffic to their websites, publishers have leaped headfirst onto Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Reddit and others. They’ve established verified accounts, hired social media editors, taught their reporters to tweet and asked them add buzzy personality to stories that will spread across the social web. Larry Kramer, president and publisher of USA Today, deemed this a “Gutenberg moment” for the industry and said publishers should seize it.

But Monocle, a niche but thick global affairs and lifestyle magazine, isn’t close to sold. The magazine does not participate in social media at all: no Facebook page, no Tumblr blog, not even a Google Plus.

“Just because a new platform is out there, doesn’t mean you need to be on it,” said Tyler Brule, Monocle’s editor in chief.

‘Assassin’s Creed’ Painting Gets Its Final Stroke

Thanks to hundreds of gamers contributing to the Assassin’s Creed IV interactive painting promo, the finished artwork is now on digital display, two months before it will be shown in Le Musee de la Marine in Paris. To recap, fans of the franchise had the opportunity to take webcam pictures of their faces, and after an online vote, the winning pictures were transposed onto bodies in the painting. The campaign was spearheaded by Sid Lee Paris. And although the artistic nature of the project may not help with the game’s publicity all that much, it is cool that certain fans will be partially on display in a renowned museum. Assassin’s Creed IV for PS3 will come out on October 29, with versions for other systems to be released throughout November.
