Here’s the Ogilvy Memo Regarding E*Trade Win

By now, word is out and widespread that Ogilvy has taken the reins on the E*Trade account, which WPP sibling Grey NY of course resigned at the end of June. Whether they keep the baby or not is a story yet to be told, but according to the Spy line, O&M was one of the frontrunners on the business from the get-go. Anyhow, we’ve read recently installed E*Trade CMO Liza Landsman‘s perspective. Now, let’s pass the mic and read Ogilvy’s courtesy of New York COO Lou Aversano. Read on below and after the jump.

Furniture Retailers Hit Especially Hard by Changing Competitive Landscape

Many small businesses are spending less on traditional advertising and favoring new, more efficient approaches. But in some categories, like furniture, business dynamics are forcing them to slash ad expenses in order to survive.

Mom-and-pop furniture storefronts and small chains were among the biggest, most-reliable local print and TV advertisers for decades. But in recent years, competition from large companies has crushed the category. Bureau of Labor Statistics data show employment among furniture retailers has plummeted 24%, representing 140,000 jobs, since 2006.

At the same time, the top 100 grew revenue almost 10% last year, according to Furniture Today magazine. The result: A growing number of going-out-of-business sales for long-established small local furniture stores, such as New England’s oldest, C.A. Hoitt, in Manchester, N.H., which is closing after more than 100 years.

Small Businesses Shirk Advertising

Keith Johnson used to be a brand manager with world’s-biggest-advertiser Procter & Gamble Co., overseeing Iams’ eight-figure annual media budget. But after launching custom pet-food business Petbrosia last year, he’s putting most of his marketing focus on influential pet bloggers and email. And he’s trying Gannett’s daily-deal service, DealChicken, with a half-price offer aimed at signing people up for pet-food subscriptions.

Digital isn’t the only way to go for small businesses with tiny marketing budgets. PR is another good option — and it can enable the really lucky, like Corey Ward, to hit it big.

Mr. Ward is co-founder of Tom and Chee, which launched in 2009 serving gourmet grilled-cheese sandwiches and tomato soup near the county courthouse in Cincinnati. It now has six stores in two states and plans to franchise nationally.Tom and Chee started out with Groupon. The restaurant sold 2,500 Groupons by 10 a.m. the first time it tried daily deals in 2011. But that was when Groupon was a novelty and drive-time radio DJs were talking about the daily deals. So he turned to PR and managed to get his chain appearances on Travel Channel’s “Man vs. Food” and ABC’s “Shark Tank.” The result was 7,000 franchisee applicants from as far as Ireland and Vietnam, along with attention in local media for store openings.

Bielby, Digitas Part Ways

Just nine months after assuming the EVP of North American planning post at Digitas, sources confirm that Leslie Bielby is parting ways with the agency to grow her independent strategic planning and research consultancy. A spokesperson tells us, “She has been a strategic force and leader for Digitas during her tenure here, and we wish her only the best in this pursuit and the future partnerships that her consultancy will attract.”

Bielby joined Digitas from Hill Holliday, where she spent six years overall and last served as chief strategy officer for the Boston and New York branches. During her career, the exec also held planning positions at the likes of MMB, Merkley+ Partners and McKinney. In case you need some clarification , Bielby’s position as EVP, North America planning at Digitas is different and distinct from that of Baba Shetty‘s. The latter, of course, rejoined the agency world last week–Digitas specifically–as chief strategy and media officer after a brief stint as CEO of Newsweek/The Daily Beast.
