La Ciudad de La Raqueta Tennis School: Ballrocking

The action was based on a powerful insight: the tennis balls that go out and end up on the surrounding fences. JWT found a way to make these “misses” something positive. That’s how “Ballrocking” was created; Motivational messages inserted into a very unique format: the tennis balls that get stuck on the fences that surround the courts.
That way, each time one of the kids sends a ball out while training they will see a motivational message.

The Strangest Pen Ads You Will Ever See

uniball_pen_prison.png

Prison. War. Switched at birth. These are the topics central to a new and strange TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris campaign for Uniball pen. Each of three spots takes place in a setting (prison, war, in a girl’s bedroom) where the subject receives a letter that is then read in one of three fonts (Edwardian Script, Comic Sans and Broadway). Oddness pursues.

We think it’s the poor girl who gets the worst news in the campaign but each version is a bit weird in its own right. It’s a decidedly different way to sell pens that, let’s be honest, no one even uses anymore but we can’t fault the brand for trying.

Fox Looks to Break Down the Traditional Fall Season

Fox is looking beyond the traditional broadcast schedule, planning to roll out originals around the year and break out of the confines of the typical 22-episode season.

“We are breaking down the notion of a fall season,” said Kevin Reilly, chairman-entertainment at Fox Broadcasting, during a call with press ahead of the network’s upfront presentation Monday afternoon. Fox will stagger premieres throughout the year, he said, attempting to break the perception that premieres can only come in September and January and that summer is a dead zone for scripted TV.

To that end, a 12-episode run of “24,” starring Keifer Sutherland, will likely premiere next May and run through the summer. Fox is also introducing a second limited series, “Wayward Pines,” a thriller from M. Night Shymalan that will also debut next year.

Lingerie Celebrates Japan’s Plan to Stimulate Growth

Triumph, a marvelously named Swiss-owned women’s clothier in Japan, has unveiled its annual concept bra, which might just be the first economics-themed lingerie. The Abenomics Bra, named after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's “three arrow” economic plan to achieve 2 percent inflation, aims to grow bust sizes with 2 percent extra padding. The golden bra features ceremonial Shinto arrows and is paired with a skirt adorned with a target. According to Triumph’s lovely model in the video below, “If a woman thinks she looks beautiful, she will work harder. And that will surely increase inflation and boost the economy. Right?” I’m sure there’s some evidence that attractive bras stimulate growth, but it's probably not the kind Prime Minister Abe is aiming for.

Digitas Makes Some Reductions in NY, Boston

It’s been fairly quiet on the Digitas the staffing front for the past few months, save for a new hire here, a couple of departures there. Now, though, sources familiar with the matter are telling us that the agency is making some reductions in its New York and Boston offices as of this week, and from what we hear, 40-50 individuals in various departments are being affected. Digitas isn’t commenting but we’re getting word that there’s no specific reason for the cuts, just another case of agency readjustment, which in this particular one affects roughly 2% of the Publicis Groupe agency’s North American workforce. We’ll keep you posted if and when we hear more.

What Do ‘Shopping-Haul’ Viral Videos Have That Yours Don’t?

There is a false assumption when talking about what goes viral. It’s something like this: “Viral is what happens to great content.”

It’s a nice thought. Sometimes it’s even true. But as much as we’d like to believe that well-scripted, beautifully produced and properly placed content always goes viral, again and again we see examples of how that’s just not the case.

When we look at the most popular form of content on YouTube right now, we find something called “shopping-haul” videos. These are webcam videos of teenage girls and young women showing off clothes they just bought. Bad video, bad sound — and still many of these pieces of content soar to tens of thousands of views.

Volkswagen: The Bird

The winter makes Sweden a harsh place to live, and you know it’s coming when you see the birds migrate. But for those of us who has to stay here, Volkswagen has equipped their Skiteam edition cars with the 4MOTION four wheel drive, car heater and roof box – all the things you might need to face the Swedish winter – and made it into an affordable offer.

Together with the University in Lund we used GPS to live-track an osprey bird during its winter migration to the southern hemisphere and back. TVCs, print ads, outdoor and banners led to the campaign site where you could follow the bird, read his comments (it’s a bird, why wouldn’t it tweet?!), learn more about the offer and the 4MOTION cars as well as guess the return date for a chance to win prizes.

The campaign, and the offer, lasted until the bird returned. It’s a winter adjusted offer for a winter adjusted car.

Pierce Parts Ways with KBS+

After seeing the reports ast week that Paul Renner was assuming the position of executive creative director on BMW at KBS+, one had to wonder what the status was with DJ Pierce, who rejoined said agency two years ago to take on the same role. Well, it does appear that Renner has succeeded Pierce more or less as sources familiar with the matter have confirmed that the latter has indeed turned in his resignation. From what sources in the know tell us, Pierce will part ways with KBS+ on June 1 and spies add that he’ll then turn his attention to his own projects, whatever they may be.

Pierce rejoined KBS+ after spending four years at CP+B, where he eventually moved up to creative director and was involved on projects including Best Buy’s Titanium Grand Prix-winning”Twelpforce” as well as with other accounts including AmEx small business along the way.
