Kraft, Kellogg Beat Analyst Expectations

CHICAGO (AdAge.com) — In the face of rising commodity costs and cautious consumers, most brand-name food manufacturers are continuing to increase marketing investment. Kraft and Kellogg, which both reported earnings this morning, credited advertising and marketing with the strength of the companies' respective brand portfolios. Both marketers saw profits drop and simultaneously beat analyst expectations.

BATAVIA, Ohio (AdAge.com) — Procter & Gamble Co. made its numbers last quarter, and that should be no surprise. How it did so, however, is a little more interesting, with less glamorous businesses such as diapers, paper towels and coffee pulling up results dragged down by beauty.

The Vlasic stork is no Aflac duck. Still, the old ad mascot is back in a new campaign from Publicis & Hal Riney that tweaks the pickle brand’s tagline (from “That’s the best tasting pickle I ever heard” to “That’s the tastiest crunch I ever heard”) and features Nascar’s Kevin Harvick endorsing the product as “the champion pickle” with a crunch that gets him “fired up.” If I were a racecar driver, I’d avoid such potentially combustible wordplay. But if I were a racecar driver, I’d be kicking back in the hot tub with the trophy wife instead of writing this post. Vlasik is also holding a “Crunch Off” (it’s what it sounds like: “Crunch! Crunch!”); a “Vlasik Stork Baby” contest (for human babies, actually); and a “Be the Vlasic Stork” competition (the .001 percent of humans who have beaks have an unfair advantage). The folks who worked all this out get an A+ for effort. Still, I can’t help but think if they stood up in their offices and looked out the window, they might see this stork perched on the ledge, shaking his head sadly and munching on a pickle. (Guess he finally got tired of hanging around outside my cube.)

Denton’s Law: Perform Or Perish

Nick Denton, Publisher of Gawker Media is worth a lot of money. He didn’t get that way from making dumb moves. Even so, he raised a few eyebrows with his recent announcement that he would part with Wonkette, GridSkipper and Idolatar.

Here’s his reasoning:

Everybody says that the internet is special; that advertising is still moving away from print and TV; and Gawker sites are still growing in traffic by about 90% a year, way faster than the web as a whole. But it would be naive to think that we can merely power through an advertising recession. We need to concentrate our energies, and the time of Chris Batty’s sales group, on the sites with the greatest potential for audience and advertising.

The dozen sites that remain represent some 97% or our 228m pageviews per month, and an even higher proportion of our growth and advertising revenue.

Idolatar was purchased by Buzznet, a music-focused web and social network.

Gridskipper is being taken over by Curbed, the network founded by Lockhart Steele, in which Gawker Media is a shareholder.

Wonkette is being spun off to its managing editor, Ken Layne.
