Tan The Indoor Tanning Association launches a marketing campaign today to try to convince the pastier among us that artificial tanning is not dangerous, contrary to some reports. You can see the group’s big New York Times ad here, which is notable for putting the words “Tanning causes melanoma” in giant type. (The word “Hype” is then stamped on, too, but you’ve already started to wonder.) I was a teenager once. Back then, we rode horses 20 miles to school every day. Or maybe we rode dinosaurs. It was almost that long ago. There were no home computers. No Facebook. No Photoshop. There were photo shops at the mall, but most of us used Polaroid instant cameras. Thank God those will never die out! My point: We were all covered head to toe in zits and whatnot, and there wasn’t a damn thing we could do about it, because acne creams didn’t work way back when (it’s hard to believe, I know), and we couldn’t “enhance” or “fake” our appearances online. Today, of course, one can post David Beckham’s picture on one’s MySpace page; I don’t know who would do such a thing, but I want to assure Mr. Beckham’s attorneys that I’m abiding by the restraining order and it won’t happen again. Oh, there’s a new survey by OTX Research and Intelligence Group, which found that teens are happier with how they look online (78 percent) than in real life (68 percent). Stop. The. Presses. My point: I’ll play Styx as loud as I want today, because I’m feeling kind of sad about my lost youth. Stick your nose back in your own cubicle, Fred!

Fedex – I love your ads but you suck.

Gaaaaaawd, Fedex sucks. Somewhere in Europe someone decided to use Fedex to send us their reel(s), which is great and normally we simply get a package (usually by post rather than fedex), open it, convert it and post the films on the sites. Ta-dah!

When we moved our office, we moved to a place where the door to the street is locked (not uncommon), thus Fedex needs to either a) call us, b) know the code for the door or c) hang the package on the door (which is not done for obvious reasons). So, back then we went through the trouble of faxing, mailing and handing over a copy of a paper that gave our authorization to call us (!!) when any fedex package arrives so that we may step the five steps out of the office here and open the dang door for Fedex. Seriously, the door is exactly five steps away from where I sit. They don’t even knock!

I don’t know what Fedex did with these copies of our authorization, but they seem to have promptly lost it as I just got a text message (proving that they indeed have my number still) saying they’ve tried to deliver a package and I must call to tell them when they can come with it. Dudes, how about right now?

So I call Fedex, and find out that they have “tried to deliver three times” to us already, no notes have been left on the door so there was no indication that they had (else I would have called fedex, of course) and that the package might be going back to its sender (who it is is still unknown to me) unless they can arrange a drop-off tomorrow. Sure you can drop it off tomorrow, you could in fact have dropped it off on the previous three tries had you phoned the number as per the authorization forms instructions that I’ve given Fedex. The woman at Fedex customer care said that they have no trace of such an authorization, or she can’t see it. I sarcastically said “well, if you keep loosing those forms maybe I should instruct people to not use Fedex when sending packages to us.” She replied: “Maybe you should.”

Well okay then. Do not use Fedex when you send packages of tapes to Adland. They simply suck and will not deliver your package overnight or whatever the hell they are charging you for. It is a pure waste of money for you and a constant hassle for me. Happy now, Fedex?

Can A Chip Be An Accidental Revolutionary?

Will you choose SunChips because they’re made with solar power? The Frito-Lay division of PepsiCo certainly hopes so.

According to The New York Times, a 10-acre “farm” of solar collectors is being installed at the Modesto, Calif. plant, to provide up to 75 percent of the energy needed to produce the product.

The plant, one of seven in the United States that make SunChips, is scheduled to start using solar power on Earth Day, April 22, as part of ambitious efforts by Frito-Lay and PepsiCo to convince consumers that the companies care about the environment.

Those measures include buying renewable energy credits, a move that is being promoted on packages of SunChips. The company is also rethinking manufacturing processes to use less water and power and is installing fuel-efficient ovens.

This effort seems sincere, and from a branding perspective you couldn’t find a more perfect product than SunChips. Solar is built in to the snack’s identity.

SunChips billboards enjoy spring sunshine

Sunchips Kind of a cool billboard for SunChips, part of a campaign written up by Stuart Elliott in The New York Times this morning. In New York, it probably took some time to find billboard locations that actually get a decent amount of direct sunlight every day. Not to mention, the ads might look a little odd at night and on cloudy days. Other billboards have made use of shadows, of course—notably, McDonald’s sundial and the World Wildlife Fund’s rising-oceans ad.

AOL’s Seven Dwarfs

The Wall Street Journal is shining some light on AOL’s efforts to integrate Advertising.com with the other ad-technology firms they recently purchased, all of which have different areas of expertise, from behavioral targeting to video ads.

AOL’s future largely hinges on the success of that transformation, which involves aggressively slashing costs, forsaking billions of dollars in overall subscription revenue, and laying off thousands of employees.

Lynda Clarizio, 47, a nine-year veteran of AOL, is leading the way. Clarizio led the team that acquired Advertising.com in 2004 for $435 million. That unit has accounted for nearly a quarter of AOL’s revenue and is one of the fastest-growing parts of the company.

Trained as a lawyer, Clarizio is known internally for an analytical mind and an ability to delegate. A graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School, she came to AOL from Washington law firm Arnold & Porter, where she was a partner for seven years and also worked as an AOL outside counsel.
