TBWASingapore Explores the Real Dollhouses of Airbnb

When TBWA won Airbnb back in September, we were very curious to see what sort of work the agency would do for its client.

It’s fair to say that Airbnb’s campaigns to date have differed dramatically, and the latest from TBWA’s Singapore office is no exception. Pereira & O’Dell’s May ad was a simple collection of landscapes and interiors while VCCP’s work from earlier this month told an animated version of a Cold War story.

The most impressive fact about the new TBWA spot? It was shot in one take and without any form of computer-generated imagery. It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood:

The release tells us that the work was inspired by real-life Airbnb listings ranging from a “fairytale gingerbread house” (California, of course) to a surprisingly wide selection of treehouses.

TBWA Celebrates a Day of Sun for Jimmy Dean

TBWA/Chiat Day, LA has a new series of online spots in their ongoing campaign promoting Jimmy Dean’s new lunch and dinner offerings.

Some wondered, when Jimmy Dean announced the move into the instant lunch/dinner market, whether the brand would retain its recognizable sun character due to its association with the morning. But the brand is leaning on its mascot as much as ever, explaining its continued presence with a new series of online spots tracking him on characters across the country and throughout the day.

In “Slow Roast Shuffle” (featured above), he’s dancing up a storm while promoting Jimmy Dean Pulled Pork. Things get over-the-top pretty quickly and his dance partner can’t exactly keep up, as TBWA/Chiat Day stretch the character into some cartoonish territory. Other spots are slightly more down-to-earth, with the sun dropping change into parking meters, giving out free lunch at baggage claim in an airport and riding off into the sunset. All the videos are hosted on a website where you can also track the sun’s progress on the “Sunniest Day,” which Jimmy Dean says was yesterday.

Despite TBWA’s best efforts, the character, so long associated with breakfast, seems a little out of place in these scenarios (and past the AM). With time we’ll see if these are just growing pains or if the character continues to feel awkward promoting meals past breakfast. (more…)

TBWA Employs Star Voices for Conservation International

TBWA Media Arts Lab has launched a star-studded campaign for Conservation International, entitled “Nature is Speaking,” which employs celebrities as elements of nature delivering the message that environmental reform is an immediate concern.

Star voices include Julia Roberts as Mother Nature, Harrison Ford as The Ocean, Kevin Spacey as The Rainforest, Edward Norton as The Soil, Penelope Cruz as Water and Robert Redford as The Redwood. The campaign debuted at SXSW Eco and rolled out yesterday on YouTube, with the Mother Nature film highlighted on www.conservation.org. That nearly two-minute video functions as the campaign’s center point and introduction. Roberts, as Mother Nature, casts aside the notion that nature is something separate from people to be used. “I don’t really need people, but people need me,” Roberts intones over footage of natural marvels (bonus points for time-lapse footage of oyster mushrooms growing). She goes on to point out how the fate of humans is linked to nature. “When I thrive, you thrive,” she says. “When I falter, you falter — or worse.” She concludes, “One way or another, your actions will determine your fate. Not mine…I am prepared to evolve, are you?” It’s a powerful message, hammering home the immediacy of the issue with emotion.

It also functions as something of a rebranding for the environmental movement. As Dr. M. Sanjayan, Conservation International’s executive vice president and senior scientist points out in a press release, “The environmental movement has missed the mark when talking about nature because it tends to present nature as something that is separate from people. By making it clear that people need nature to survive, we are turning the conversation around and making the movement relevant to entirely new audiences.”

As the campaign continues, Conservation Internation will highlight a different film each week on www.conservation.org, with an accompanying post on its Human Nature blog. Next week will focus on The Ocean (voiced by Vice Chairman of Conservation International Harrison Ford), followed by The Rainforest (voiced by Spacey) and The Soil (Norton). We’ve included Ford and Spacey’s contributions after the jump. The campaign also includes a social extension, with HP promising to donate one dollar to Conservation International, up to one million, for every use of the #NatureIsSpeaking hashtag. (more…)

TBWAChiatDay Sends Off Yankees Captain for Gatorade

TBWAChiatDay bids adieu to Yankees captain (and regular starting shortstop since 1996) Derek Jeter in a 90-second send-off spot for Gatorade, an MLB sponsor since 1990.

While there has been no shortage of fanfare surrounding Jeter’s exit from baseball at the quickly approaching end to the season (including a somewhat excessive display at the All Star game), TBWAChiatDay’s farewell for Gatorade, which Jeter collaborated on, manages to charm. Back in July (when it still looked like the Yankees had a shot at the postseason), TBWAChiatDay and Gatorade roped off a few blocks before a home game in the Bronx and, in the words of Molly Carter, Gatorade’s senior director of consumer engagement, “just kind of let Jeter go.”

Jeter is seen interacting with some very surprised and excited fans, signing autographs and even dropping in to Stan’s Sports Bar. Most of the spot’s charm comes from the authentic reactions of the fans, delighted by the opportunity to meet the star player.

Jeter’s collaboration for the ad also extended to the soundtrack, with the shortstop choosing Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” as the song that summed up his career. “It was a true collaboration between Derek and Gatorade,” Carter told Adweek.

The spot breaks online today, followed by a broadcast premiere this Saturday on the YES Network and Fox, when it’s sure to make more than a few Yankees fans teary-eyed. Gatorade will follow this with a full-page ad, written by Jeter, in the New York Daily News and Sports Illustrated on Sept. 28-29. Addressed to New York, the ad will see Jeter thanking fans for their years of support, opening, “From my first at bat until my final out, you helped make me who I am.” The print ad is timed to coincide with Jeter’s final game on September 28th (unless the team makes the playoffs, which they won’t). TBWAChiatDay Wins Miller Lite

MillerLiteRetro_2Twitter hashtags didn’t quite do the trick for Leo Burnett: TBWAChiatDay will be creative AOR for Miller Lite.

The agency is currently referring all media inquiries to the client, but a spokesperson (and several tipsters) confirmed that the announcement happened minutes ago in the agency’s L.A. office.

This news caps off a good two-week run for TBWA, which won Airbnb and Buffalo Wild Wings earlier this month.

As for the strategic implications of the agency shift, we have a feeling Miller will stay on the retro path since real-life research tells us that people seem to honestly think that the beer tastes better in old-school cans.

TBWAMAL and Apple Go Light in New iPhone Spots

In case you caught some of Apple’s super epic product launch event yesterday amidst all the Chinese translations and tech glitches, the company announced new versions of its signature product along with the much-discussed Apple Watch. Apple and its AOR TBWAMedia Arts Lab also launched a couple of new spots to promote the iPhone 6 and the slightly larger iPhone 6, which includes the “Plus” designation.

The celebrity hand models are Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake. In the first spot, the two break it down in what we choose to read as a (slightly off-key) a capella tribute to the late, great Stanley Kubrick:

The second spot is more straightforward, and it’s less a collaboration than a competition. (Spoiler: JT wins.)

TBWAChiatDay Serves Jimmy Dean 24/7

As The New York Times told us this weekend, Americans are eating more frozen food — and Jimmy Dean wants to move out of the freezer and onto the dinner table by expanding upon its breakfast-sausage-centered lineup.

The company’s creative AOR TBWAChiatDay L.A. will help its longtime client move t0ward that goal with a new campaign. Here’s the first spot, which aims to dispel the crazy idea that frozen dinners lack flavor by pitting them against a fresh batch of iceberg lettuce:

We’ll have what they’re having, et cetera.

Jimmy Dean also defeats the dreaded tuna fish sandwich after the jump.

Creative Director Mark Peters Joins TBWAChiatDay LA

Today brings news that Mark Peters has joined the LA offices of TBWAChiatDay as creative director.

Peters made headlines here in 2010 when he left mcgarrybowen for Deutsch LA after a brief stint managing the Verizon account. At Deutsch, he served as SVP and played lead on Volkswagen (which recently taught our imaginary sons how to throw a baseball). Of course, he also worked on the famous Darth Vader spot that recently lost its “most viral ad ever” crown to…a Shakira video.

CCO Steven Butler writes, “Mark has an impressive background, and a rich history of creating inspiring, needle-moving campaigns for a slew of top-tier multinational brands”. His resume includes periods serving as art director at Ogilvy LA and Martin, and prior to joining mcgarrybowen in 2010 he handled BMW, Kohler, AT&T, Legacy and L.L. Bean as ACD at GSD&M.

In his new role, Peters will no longer be a one-client guy: he will work across accounts including Southwest Airlines, Nixon, Gatorade and NKLA (No Kill Los Angeles).

One factoid we gleaned from the release: Peters played both collegiate and professional soccer before settling into a more workaday career in the ad world.

TBWA/MAL ‘Dreams’ for Apple’s iPhone 5S

TBWA/Media Arts Lab has a new spot for Apple’s iPhone 5S entitled “Dreams.”

Set to the made-for-a-television-commercial strum of Jennifer O’Connor’s “When I Grow Up,” the spot celebrates everyday heroes like firemen, doctors, veterinarians, environmental scientists and artists. The choice of music, pacing and editing make the spot feel like a spiritual successor of sorts to the recent “Parenthood” successful spot. Like that ad, “Dreams” shows its subjects using the iPhone 5S in a variety of ways as a tool to do their job better. It’s nothing ground breaking, but it communicates its message well while showing a variety of the smart phone’s capabilities. Coming off the recent spot “Stickers” and the aforementioned “Parenthood,” “Dreams” sees TBWA/Media Arts Lab on something of a creative roll following the announcement in June that Apple would take more ads in-house.

We Hear: Infiniti Officially No Longer with TBWA

To follow up on a story Adweek posted a whole three weeks ago (we know, we know), we did receive word today that TBWAChiat Day will officially no longer serve as the AOR for Infiniti after more than fifteen years.

In late June we heard that a total of seven agencies were chasing the account, and two weeks later sources told Adweek that CP+B, BBH, GS&P and Anomaly were the only ones left standing.

The company has apparently made its decision; this week TBWA employees received the internal memo indicating that the client would no longer be theirs effective September 1st.

On an interesting side note, General Motors poached Infiniti CEO Johan de Nysschen earlier this month in the middle of the review–a move that certainly disrupted the process a bit.

In other words, expect news on which agency won the business to arrive shortly. Updates as we receive them.

TBWA/Chiat Day Taps Bret Michaels in ‘Tough Love’ for Nissan

TBWA/Chiat Day tapped reality star/former Poison singer/sole proprietor of bandana manufacturers in 2014 Bret Michaels in their latest campaign for Nissan, entitled “Tough Love.”

The centerpiece of the new campaign, which celebrates the toughness of Nissan’s line of commercial vans, is a music video of Michaels covering “Endless Love,” the schmaltzy 1981 hit written by Lionel Richie. Just what you always wanted. The video alludes to a series of six product demonstrations at Nissan’s Arizona Testing Center while Michaels belts the tune into a golden microphone. Videos of the product demonstrations, featuring Michaels, are also available, and viewers who survive the full length of the music video are prompted to choose one of them to view. As it turns out, they’re a lot easier to stomach than the music video, and not just because they’re shorter. Credits and two product demonstration videos after the jump. (more…)

TBWA Explores ‘Gas Station’ Fears for Nissan Sentra

TBWA Toronto has a new spot for Nissan Sentra that explores fears of filling up, horror movie style.

The 60-second “Gas Station” opens on a man arriving at a creepy, dimly-lit gas station. Soon the station comes to life, as the man is relentlessly attacked by the gas pumps, which also do a number on his car. Eventually, another man, driving a Nissan Sentra, comes to the rescue, beckoning him to hop in. This is followed by the message, “Don’t Fear Filling Up,” and boast of the Sentra’s “Better combined fuel economy than Civic.” In a spot that spends so much time on a ridiculous fuel-fearing message, you’d think they’d focus a little more than a quick flash of text on the Sentra’s fuel economy, but instead most of the 60 seconds are spent on building up unconvincing horror atmosphere. Stick around for credits after the jump. (more…)

Two TBWA Staffing Updates

Today we learned more about the status of two now-former TBWA executives: TBWAChiatDay ECD Patrick O’Neill has joined a startup and George Nguyen is no longer managing director or chief strategy officer at TBWAToronto.

The news about O’Neill, who left the agency back in January in a move that inspired quite a bit of speculation on this very blog, broke yesterday with the announcement that his new position would be CCO at Theranos, a consumer healthcare tech company based in Silicon Valley that focuses on offering testing services outside the lab at its many “testing centers” (some of which have recently appeared in Walgreens).

Like Apple Technology, TBWA May Be Updated Very Soon

For more than 30 years, TBWA/Media Arts Lab has enjoyed one of the most prized advertising accounts on the planet. After reports from the New York Post et al. and that entity called “Madison Avenue”agencies are salivating for a bite of the Apple.

The dirty laundry aired in the form of internal emails during the Samsung trial in April and the subsequent reports that Apple would create more of its own ads in-house may have had something to do with this latest development.

Moreover, word is that whichever outside firm may eventually work on the account will also answer to Jimmy Iovine, president and grand poobah of Beats headphones, BeatsMusic and all other things By Dre that were recently acquired by Apple.

New President/CEO at TBWA Worldwide

This evening brings news that Troy Ruhanen will succeed Tom Carroll to become the new President/CEO of TBWA Worldwide. (Jean-Marie Dru will retain his position as Chairman of the Agency Network.)

Ruhanen, a member of the AAF Hall of Fame who first earned your Spy’s attention back in 2009 when BBDO created the Deputy Chairman North America position to give him a promotion, spent the last ten months as EVP of the larger Omnicom Group.

In the past, he held several executive positions at BBDO, managing its New York office before serving as Chairman/CEO of the Americas and overseeing its operations in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Before joining Team Omnicom, he also spent three years as Managing Director of Leo Burnett’s office in his native Sydney.

In what’s sure to be a controversial quote, Ruhanen wrote that his appointment is “a great honor” due primarily to TBWA’s “unique strategic method in Disruption®”, which “attracts talent, unlike others, and produces work that creates a competitive advantage.”

Deputy Director Leaves TBWA

In a quick bit of staffing news before the long weekend, Deputy Director/Head of Account Management Justin Manfredi left his position at TBWA’s Digital Arts Network this week.

Manfredi, who worked in accounts at JWT, Deutsch New York/LA and San Francisco’s AKQA, joined TBWA approximately one year ago. The hire was part of a move the agency made to “ramp up” its digital West Coast staff in 2013. Manfredi joined along with 72andSunny/W+K NY alum Larry Lac, former Ignited analytics lead Eric Fader, and Vaino Leskinen of TBWA Helsinki.

Before joining TBWA, Manfredi served as Senior Integrated Account Director at David&Goliath. The agency describes his new role as “client side” work with Activision, but at the moment we have no details on title or responsibilities.

Infiniti Courts Seven Agencies in Global Account Pitch

Infiniti Motor Co. will meet (or has already met) with seven agencies before selecting finalists to pitch for its global creative account, Adweek reports.

The meetings took place this week, and leave Infiniti “on track to complete its search by August,” according to Adweek. Infiniti’s initial request for proposal reported that the brand spends approximately $450 million annually. Among the agencies in the running are Publicis, FCB, Havas Worldwide (pitching with sister shop Arnold), Bartle Bogle Hegarty, M&C Saatchi and Crispin Porter + Bogusky, according to Adweek‘s sources. Interestingly, also pitching is Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, partnering with incumbent Omnicom agency TBWA. After the initial meetings, Infiniti will narrow the field to three or four agencies, a cut that “could come as soon as next week.” Infiniti’s RFP noted that “alternative approaches are paramount as Infiniti cannot outspend its competitors in broadcast,” and identified the U.S., China and Hong Kong as priority markets.

TBWA’s Latest for iPhone 5S Features Unusual Song Choice

While Apple recently announced that it will be taking more of its ads in house, this latest iPhone spot comes from TBWA Media Arts Lab, and features a rather unusual song selection.

The 60-second spot, entitled “Strength,” is a relatively straightforward montage promoting the use of the iPhone 5S for physical fitness. Less straightforward, however, is the spot’s soundtrack. As Adweek reports, “Strength” is set to “The Youth Fitness Song” (also called “Chicken Fat”), which originally appeared as a song from President Kennedy’s national physical fitness program. The song, which was written by Meredith Wilson and performed by Robert Preston in 1961, was distributed to schools and played as an accompaniment to a morning calisthenics routine. Whether the song is meant to stoke Baby Boomer nostalgia or someone on board just thought it would be a fun bit of silliness, “Go, you chicken fat, go” is a pretty strange way to tell people to start exercising (while utilizing their iPhone 5S). Coming on the heels of the recent spot featuring “Gigantic,” it marks something of a trend in unorthodox song selections promoting the 5S.

TBWAParis Raises Awareness for Amnesty International France

TBWAParis, Amnesty International France’s advertising agency for 10 years, has a new ad for the organization, which is celebrating its 35th anniversary.
The 1:55 film, entitled “Pens,” uses a clever visual device to tell the story of an unnamed protestor. The protestor is arrested, detained and abused, but released following thousands of petitions for his release. Set to a soundtrack performed by Paolo Nutini, with a short, stirring excerpt from Charlie Chaplin’s The Dictator, the spot champions Amnesty’s process of mobilization via the signatures of its supporters. “Pens” is a clear expression of Amnesty Frances’s ““your signature is more powerful than you think” slogan and a powerful encapsulation of what the organization stands for. Eid will collaborate frequently with Myllyrinne, whose most recent position was Executive Director of Digital Strategy for TBWAChiatDay New York. Myllyrinne will also lead TBWA’s “product incubator” Pilot while working directly with DAN president Stuart Sproule (third from left) on creative tech and strategy for global clients.
