While at the latter shop, the two both worked on the Georgia Pacific account under current EVP of creative Anthony Reeves; they will now serve as senior creatives within 22’s newly formed content department.

Moving forward, both Bloom and Taylor will report to 22squared EVP/CCD John Stapleton.

EVP/ECD Leaves Deutsch LA for Media Arts Lab

In dated but unreported news, Executive Vice President Mathias Appelblad recently left Deutsch LA for TBWA‘s Media Arts Labwhich has witnessed some executive-level changes as its relationship with sole client Apple shifts.

Appleblad joined Deutsch in February 2013 to assume the then-new role of EVP/Digital Executive Creative Director, creating work for Volkswagen and others. Prior to that move, he spent nearly three years as EVP/ECD at BBDO New York, where he worked on campaigns like GE’s “Ecomagination.”

Appleblad’s agency roots lie overseas with Sweden’s Forsman & Bodenfors; he joined F&B after establishing himself as an art director with various companies and worked on IKEA’s “Dream Kitchen for Everyone (no noise)” as Interactive Creative Director.

We have no official word on his position at MAL, but we will update this post if we receive more information.

72andSunny Names ECD Matt Murphy as Partner

Longtime 72andSunny creative director Matt Murphy just added a new word to his title: partner.

Murphy, who joined the agency from W+K Portland in 2009, is now officially Partner/Group Creative Director.

In his nearly five years at 72andSunny, Murphy has worked on some of the agency’s biggest accounts and campaigns including Nike, Activision, K-Swiss/Kenny Powers and Google (on which he will continue to lead creative).

The release notes that he will “help lead 72andSunny’s commitment to experimentation with art, technology, and entertainment”. Co-founder/CCO Glenn Cole writes:
“He is constantly experimenting and pushing the creative limits of 72andSunny. His partnership will only allow him to have broader impact, and we look forward to that.”
On a side note, we do like this line from a bio best read with tongue planted as firmly as possible in cheek:
“When Matt is not finding new and interesting ways to work with brands to solve creative problems, he can be found helping his babe of a wife tend to their kale garden and/or dreaming up his next art project.”

Seattle’s Creature Appoints New President

Today Seattle design/ad shop Creature announced that James Keblas would be its new President, effective immediately.

The most interesting part of this announcement is that Keblas does not have the background one might expect for an incoming agency president.

He spent the last nine years as director of the city’s official Office of Film + Music and, before that, he worked at the nonprofit arts center The Vera Project. Keblas has spent a majority of his career to date preserving and promoting the arts in Seattle.

So why did Creature go with Keblas?

We Hear: Executive Producer Out at Innocean USA

While Innocean officially declines to comment on staffing changes, we’ve received a steady stream of tips this week regarding Executive Producer Jamil Bardowell.

Seems that Bardowell, who joined Innocean as VP, Director of Integrated Production in 2012, is no longer with the agency.

Bardowell has an extensive agency background: before joining Innocean, he worked at WPP’s The Garage Team Mazda; previous roles include production duties at Deutsch, Saatchi & Saatchi and The Rumor Mill.

His name appears on campaigns as recent as this week’s Hyundai FIFA spot; we’ll let you know if we learn more.

Layoffs at Leo Burnett Chicago

We’ve just confirmed, as per your tips, that a round of layoffs took place at Leo Burnett Chicago this week.

A spokesperson tells us that the agency had to let “less than 10 of our friends and colleagues” go in a one-time staffing shift; no details as to who was affected, though some creatives have lost their jobs. You may recall that this move follows a larger series of layoffs in February.

Again, we have no official word on the who or the why. In other recent Leo Burnett news, the Chicago-based McDonald’s account changed hands as the agency continued to produce work for clients like Coors Light Canada.

AdPeople Worldwide Signs Former GSD&M GCD to Lead North American Creative

Steve Miller, former group creative director at Austin’s GSD&M, will now be North American ECD for WPP “network agency” AdPeople Worldwide, handling creative solutions for clients like Dell.

Miller worked with some of GSD&M’s biggest clients (BMW, AT&T, etc.) during his ten years there; he most recently led the creative team at health-care focused agency HCB Health. While Miller will stay in Texas for his new position, he hasn’t always been based in Austin. Before moving south, he spent several years with JWT San Francisco on the Sprint account, so he’s not a new face at the WPP table.

According to the release, Miller is digital to the core: his interest in apps and such led him to create his own agency Super Deluxe, which focuses not on creating apps but providing “branded mobile experiences” to clients.

As ECD, Miller will report to AdPeople’s North American MD Simon Hjorth. The move is a return of sorts; as Miller writes:
“I’m looking forward to getting back to the type of dynamic agency environment I enjoy, serving multiple industries and a variety of clients.”

CCO Matt Eastwood Leaves DDB for JWT

The move is now official: agency vet Matt Eastwood has left his position as CCO at DDB New York to become worldwide chief creative officer at JWT (or, as they’d prefer, the J. Walter Thompson Company).

The Australian-turned-New Yorker worked with DDB in his home country and served as CCO at Y&R before he replaced a departing Eric Silver in the agency’s Manhattan office almost exactly four years ago.

Eastwood brings an extensive portfolio to the new role; he scored the #5 spot on the Ad Age “most awarded” list for 2013, and his name has appeared atop the credits for recent campaigns featuring everything from bearded, lottery-playing hipsters to seniors who never remember to wear their condoms.

Beginning next month, Eastwood will report directly to JWT global president Gustavo Martinez. He will be the first to fill the global CCO role since the 2009 departure of Craig Davis, who left to rejoin the continent of Australia.

Longtime ED Departs TBWAMedia Arts Lab

This morning we received confirmation from a spokesperson that Cheryl Childers, longtime Executive Director of Production with TBWA‘s Media Arts Lab, officially left the agency last week.

MAL is, of course, the famously “secretive” shop TBWA set up in 2006 to work exclusively for Apple, and Childers was a member of the core leadership team at the time of its founding. Of the four names listed in that release, two remain with MAL: ECD Eric Grunbaum and CSO Elena Hale (onetime Brand Leader Alex Moulle-Berteaux now serves as CCO at Aereo).

Childers had been with TBWA for some time before the establishment of MAL as well; her LinkedIn profile notes 23 years spent with the organization.

This move is the largest staffing change at MAL since the January appointment of president Erica Hoholick, formerly of Ogilvy London. The agency gave no details regarding the reasons for Childers’ departure or her future plans.
