Producer Matthew Anderson Joins FCB Garfinkel

Matthew Anderson, longtime producer at various agencies, will now serve as director of content creation at New York’s FCB Garfinkel.

Anderson, who has spent nearly two decades in the ad industry, served as director of brand production at JWT for almost five years before accepting the new job; you’ll find his name in the credits of many of the shop’s most memorable recent campaigns. He began his agency career with a ten-year stint in production at Y&R and more recently performed related roles at CP+B, Hill Holiday and NumberSix.

Anderson has created work in every major format for clients ranging from Rolex, Burger King, Puma and Nestle to Vespa, Kleenex and Wilkinson Sword Quattro Titanium Body.

He will report directly to agency CEO/namesake Lee Garfinkel.

In the release, Garfinkel writes that Anderson “has a track record of fostering a culture that puts ideas and problem-solving – no matter the challenge – first and foremost”, calling him “just the kind of passionate production partner we need.”

CCO Jeff Benjamin Out at JWT

We can officially confirm a series of tips we received this morning: chief creative officer Jeff Benjamin will soon be former CCO at JWT.

Despite the claims of several tipsters, the agency’s press release holds that Benjamin will leave to launch “a new creative venture” (though we get no specifics on that project).

One source says that Benjamin, who joined JWT from CP+B in 2012, was “very out of place” at the agency from the start. Contrary to prevailing stereotypes, he was more “an indie agency guy than a Mad Man”, and his non-traditional way of doing things (which often included working unusually long hours and calling fellow creatives at odd times) did not sit well with upper management.

Changes at Deutsch LA

Today we can confirm tips about two staffing changes at Deutsch LA: one arrival and one departure.

First, the agency signed Josh Hirsch as its new EVP/executive creative technology director.

Hirsch was CTO at Publicis Kaplan Thaler before the move, and he arrives to replace the outgoing CTO Trevor O’Brien, who left to devote himself full-time to The Experiment, a startup he co-founded.

In the new gig, Hirsch will oversee the Deutsch in-house development team responsible for redesigning the websites of clients like Taco Bell. Mediapost helpfully tells us that “His well-known creative achievement to date is his contribution to the HBO Voyeur Project while working at Big Spaceship.”

Also: friend of the site and all-around good guy Jeff Sweat, who previously served as SVP of PR and social media at Deutsch, has left to accept a job at 72andSunny. No word on Sweat’s official title in his new position at this time, though we look forward to accepting all his future pitches.

Two TBWA Staffing Updates

Today we learned more about the status of two now-former TBWA executives: TBWAChiatDay ECD Patrick O’Neill has joined a startup and George Nguyen is no longer managing director or chief strategy officer at TBWAToronto.

The news about O’Neill, who left the agency back in January in a move that inspired quite a bit of speculation on this very blog, broke yesterday with the announcement that his new position would be CCO at Theranos, a consumer healthcare tech company based in Silicon Valley that focuses on offering testing services outside the lab at its many “testing centers” (some of which have recently appeared in Walgreens).

ECD Michael Canning Leaves Leo Burnett

This morning we learned that EVP/ECD Michael Canning is no longer with Leo Burnett New York.

Canning spent four years at the agency’s Manhattan office after he and his creative partner Kieran Antill were recruited from the agency’s offices in their native Australia by global Chief Creative Officer Mark Tutssel in 2011 to help build Leo Burnett New York alongside Jay Benjamin (who recently moved to Saatchi & Saatchi and made news this week for shuffling the creative deck there).

Canning has more than a decade of agency experience under his belt, writing copy for Lowe Hunt and BMF before moving to Leo Burnett Sydney. He has also been a keynote speaker/judge at several festivals in addition to taking home 39 Cannes Lions to date.

GS&P Hires Two New Creative Directors

In a somewhat unprecedented move, GS&P turned the hiring of its two newest creative directors into…a customized beer cozy giveaway.

It’s symbolic, see: Danny Gonzalez and David Suarez, or “the guys who did all the Ragu and Little Caesar’s stuff at BFG”, will work on the Corona Light and Modelo accounts, hence the brew theme.

The duo most recently made news in 2012 when they jumped the Chiat ship to join BFG9000. Gonzales previously wrote copy for JWT while Suarez served as art director.

This move serves as a reunion of sorts as it once again unites Gonzales and Suarez with Eric Kallman, the copywriter behind “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like” who Graf hired from W+K in 2011. Kallman, who has been CD at GS&P since February, writes:

“Working with them again will be like putting on a really comfortable pair of jeans, but jeans that also surprise you, impress you and make you laugh. So, basically, way better than jeans.”

We would tell you to email dannyanddavidarecoming@gspsf.com for your free cozy, but those things are hotter than the weather in Manhattan this week.

Bruce Dunlop Has a Few Choice Words Following BDA’s Closure

BDA Creative’s original founder Bruce Dunlop issued a statement following the agency’s closure, citing “disagreements with the board regarding the future direction of the company” and “changes planned by the new management team” for his departure in April 2012. Dunlop went on to form a new agency, Dunlop Goodrich, with partner Daryl Goodrich following his departure.

In the statement, Dunlop largely blamed the new management team for the agency’s failure, stating “The company was run down by people who didn’t understand for one minute how we had got to where we were, and what potential was left in a big forward thinking creative company. We had done all the legwork, and just had to continue to produce good work, which was always our ambition above everything.” He speculated that “If the energy that went into destroying the company had been focused on making it better, the story would have been very different today.” Dunlop also thanked “all those who made BDA a great company” for their contributions. You can read the full statement, courtesy of The Drum, after the jump. (more…)

New President at Arnold New York

This morning brings news that Peter Grossman will be the new president of Arnold New York effective next week. He replaces Corey Mitchell, who left in May.

A bit on Grossman’s agency background: after handling AT&T and Nabisco for FCB, he spent more than a decade at JWT, eventually serving as EVP/director of client services before leaving to lead startup QWiPS, or “a global platform that enables the integration of real voice into digital communication platforms”. His most recent position was managing director at digital strategy consultancy Takeout.

In the new role, he will also focus on client leadership and new business development while managing the agency’s 100-plus New York operation.

Grossman will report to Arnold Global president Pam Hamlin, who cites his experience “leading global brands and helping Fortune 500 companies evolve their business model for the digital economy” in the press release; he will also sit on Arnold Worldwide’s Global Executive Committee.

In the release, he writes, “The agency has one of the best client rosters in the industry and a philosophy and culture built on creativity.”

Changes in Creative at Saatchi & Saatchi New York

Today we learned that some staffing changes have indeed occurred at Saatchi & Saatchi New York this week.

To continue in the passive voice: it is true that a small number of employees, most of whom worked in the creative department, are no longer with the agency as of yesterday. Tipsters hinted that the changes centered on the shop’s Wellness department, but we can’t confirm that.

We do, however, suspect that this shuffling of the desks may have something to do with the recent appointment of Jay Benjamin, who left his position as CCO at Leo Burnett New York to join the Publicis sister agency in May. That move came less than a year after Brent Smart took the reins as CEO in November 2013.

The new team’s ultimate strategy remains unclear, but on the wellness front it will almost certainly not involve cats, be they grumpy or not.

Angelo, meanwhile, will assume the newly created position of chairman while continuing to work with clients, AdAge reports.

New President/CEO at TBWA Worldwide

This evening brings news that Troy Ruhanen will succeed Tom Carroll to become the new President/CEO of TBWA Worldwide. (Jean-Marie Dru will retain his position as Chairman of the Agency Network.)

Ruhanen, a member of the AAF Hall of Fame who first earned your Spy’s attention back in 2009 when BBDO created the Deputy Chairman North America position to give him a promotion, spent the last ten months as EVP of the larger Omnicom Group.

In the past, he held several executive positions at BBDO, managing its New York office before serving as Chairman/CEO of the Americas and overseeing its operations in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Before joining Team Omnicom, he also spent three years as Managing Director of Leo Burnett’s office in his native Sydney.

In what’s sure to be a controversial quote, Ruhanen wrote that his appointment is “a great honor” due primarily to TBWA’s “unique strategic method in Disruption®”, which “attracts talent, unlike others, and produces work that creates a competitive advantage.”

FCB Does the Creative Shuffle

FCB announced two big moves atop its North American ranks today: Chicago EVP/ECD Jon Flannery is moving up to Toronto and Dan Fietsam has been hired to take his place.

Flannery’s promotion comes in the wake of the success of a certain campaign you may have seen that involved the shipping of pants; the win earned him an ECD promotion just over a year ago. While the man called himself “a late bloomer” in a Chicago Business Journal interview about that campaign, he served as CD/VP during a nine-year run at Leo Burnett and spent seven years at Element79.

Flannery replaces CCO Robin Heisey, who left FCB Toronto for parts unknown several weeks ago after 14 years at the agency. He will officially take over on August 11th, working “in tandem” with FCB Canada President Paul Mead.

ECD Carl Rogers Leaves Havas

Today we confirmed that Executive Creative Director Carl Rogers is no longer with Havas.

We have very little in the way of details at the moment, so we’ll recap:

Havas Discovery President Paul Marobella recruited Rogers in March of last year to run the agency’s newly-formed “digital/analytics/CRM arm” in Baltimore. He was quickly promoted to ECD at Havas Chicago and worked “across offices” from New York to Baltimore.

In his own words, he “directly managed in excess of 16 accounts and 75 creatives across 3 agencies” and helped win the DISH, Dos Equis and other accounts.

He also blogged.
