‘Ideas Man’ Floyd Hayes Puts You to Sleep for Yotel’s ‘Smartbed’

It’s not very often that an advertising creative boasts about putting you to sleep with one of his campaigns, but in the case of Floyd Hayes, it’s the foundation of his latest work for the airport hotel brand Yotel.

With the epic, 30-minute film “Yawn” — which Hayes himself says is his “favorite project so far” — the self-proclaimed “Ideas Man” (who you know from well-publicized efforts like “World’s Fastest Agency“) is hyping Yotel and Serta’s new Smartbed while trying to induce sleep at the same time.

How? Well, creative director Hayes, with the help of award-winning director Scott Elliott and UK electronic artist/Yotel music playlist curator Tom Middleton, has unveiled a sprawling film filled with slow-motion footage of several people (including the CD himself) heading into slumber as soothing, Vangelis-style music plays.

Regarding his contribution, Middleton says:

“I’ve designed the ultimate sleep soundtrack using psychoacoustic frequencies, grey noise and ASMR whispering voice textures. Combined with ethereal dissonance, sympathetic pulse/respiration rate reducing bio harmonics and stochastic ambience induce pure relaxation and a deep, rejuvenating sleep.”

Because Hayes’s latest project — which follows his other work for the chain like an interactive LEGO installation — was designed to inspire yawns, it may be best viewed in the comfort of your bed.

Hyper Island Creatives Launch ‘One Hour Agency’

One Hour Agency

Last year, Floyd Hayes launched the self-proclaimed “Fastest Agency in the World,” which sends out a creative pitch within 24 hours of briefing.  Well, now it seems someone has one-upped that idea, with the One Hour Agency.

That’s right, One Hour Agency, created by a couple of Hyper Island creatives, actually claims to “generate quality ideas” within the hour. More specifically, they “kick-off every briefing with one hour ideation sessions with [their] clients. This keeps energy high and injects some moxie into the process before going straight into a less energetic research phase.”

So what goes into that hour? After ten minutes of greetings and receiving the brief, One Hour Agency spends 10 minutes on evaluation, a half hour on ideation, and then 10 minutes on presentation. That’s pretty damn fast.

When asked if he thought his “Fastest Agency in the World” was the inspiration behind One Hour Agency, Floyd Hayes responded, “Ha. Perhaps. That makes me feel like a doddering old man.” He may need to think up a new name for the “Fastest Agency in the World” now, as it seems we have a new champion. Whether or not trying to deliver a creative pitch in an hour is a good idea, however, is an entirely different discussion, and one I’ll turn over to our readers.

Happy Valentine’s Day, from the ‘Ideas Man’

floydhayesvalentine

It seems our coverage of Floyd Hayes has apparently been with some disdain over the years but the self-proclaimed “Ideas Man” decided to turn negative into positive in honor of Valentine’s Day. We’ll keep this short since Hayes has touched a nerve or two over time. The man has decided to transform the negative comments he’s received on this here site and create the image above, which we couldn’t help but resist posting. Do you feel the love?

Floyd Hayes Designs Interactive LEGO Installation for YOTEL

YOTEL LEGO WallSelf-proclaimed “ideas man” Floyd Hayes had a big 2013, between founding World’s Fastest Agency and the Guerilla Marketing School, and there’s no reason to expect that 2014 will be any different.

Midtown-Manhattan hotel YOTEL called in Floyd Hayes to dress up the place during renovation. So Hayes designed an interactive LEGO wall, functioning simultaneously as a disguise for the in-transition room behind it and a cool place for guests to have fun playing around with LEGOs. That sure beats a ‘Pardon our appearance…” sign. The LEGO wall stretches across “the space age lounge area on FOUR…covers thirty feet, with a base layer of deep blue bricks.” On top of the blue base are “hundreds of LEGO bricks in an array of colors and sizes.” Guests can challenge their imagination, adding their own creations to the wall, or they can sit on one of the bright purple cushions in the room and appreciate the LEGO installation, as well as the other art in the room. That sounds like a lot of fun. Even better, visitors who choose to participate in the interactive exhibit can snap photos of their creations, tag it with the hashtag #MyLegoMasterpiece on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook, and enter for a chance to win free stays at YOTEL. The LEGO wall will remain at YOTEL until March, at which time the new Club Lounge behind it will be revealed, which almost seems too bad.

The ‘Ideas Man’ Sends His 2013 Season’s Greetings

It’s been over six months since we’ve heard from one Floyd Hayes, the “ideas man” who’s actually had a fairly productive year considering that he’s launched not only what he’s dubbed “the world’s fastest agency” but also a guerilla marketing school. Anyhow, with the year coming to a close and the holiday season upon us, Hayes, the former creative director at U.K./NY shop Cunning, has emerged to give us this holiday-themed, self-promotional clip, which is pretty self-explanatory. Well, he is the ideas man, after all.

You Can Buy a Part of Brooklyn, Sort Of

Screen shot 2013-09-19 at 3.02.27 PM

For $4, you can buy Brooklyn. Well, you can buy a tiny piece of it, at least, which costs almost as much as Jay-Z’s old ownership share of the Nets. That’s the shtick of the latest project from Floyd Hayes, the creator of “The World’s Fastest Agency” among many other ideas. Hayes also used to be ECD at Cunning, and his “Piece of Brooklyn Project” is not just a quirky gambit of guerilla enterprise. $1 of every purchase will be donated to the Brooklyn Arts Council. We can always get behind a good cause.

In case you are worried about ending up with a fraudulent chunk of BK, every item comes with a rubber stamp of authenticity, for whatever that’s worth. Check out the items here.

‘Ideas Man’ Retools Workshop, Launches Guerilla Marketing School

It’s been a couple of months since we’ve heard from Floyd Hayes, the “ideas man” himself who most recently concocted the “world’s fastest agency.” Just before that concept came to light, though, Hayes leveraged his years of experience in guerilla marketing, specifically as a creative director at U.K./NY shop Cunning, to launch a $49 course called “Free Thinking for Sale” (see clip below for reference).

Well, after a few months of trial and error, Hayes has checked in to tell us that he’s retooled the “Free Thinking” concept, shaved the price and has launched an online, interactive workshop called, yes, the Guerilla Marketing School. According to Hayes,  GMS is aimed at anyone interested in marketing, advertising, PR stunts, getting attention for their cause or just developing their creative thinking skills. This time around, Hayes’ workshop will cost you a cool $20 and his GMS course can be taken “anywhere at anytime, in one go or in snack-sized bites.” Well, why steal any more of the man’s thunder, go here if interested in learning more.

‘World’s Fastest Agency’ Welcomes First Client

Just in case you missed some coverage on Floyd Hayes, the “ideas man” has announced the first client for his Twitter-based “World’s Fastest Agency” project, that being U.S. online coupon site, RetailMeNot. According to WFA, which launched just two weeks ago, RetailMeNot sent a 140-character direct mail brief within six hours of the former’s launch (WFA responded in kind less than 24 hours later).

Here’s a statement from the coupon brand’s CEO, Cotter Cunningham: “A good marketing idea is worth its weight in gold, and I’ve paid a lot more in my day for  less than worthy ideas from other ad agencies. We like the return on our small investment in the World’s Fastest Agency on what turned out to be fun, creative thinking.” Cunningham adds, “RetailMeNot has always been on the cutting edge of sourcing content. Their business  model is somewhat reminiscent of how we have used the power of the Internet to  encourage our community of users to post coupons to our website. The World’s Fastest  Agency is an example of how the Internet is creating new business models that disrupt the  status quo.”

No update yet, though, on the client status of “Worst Fast Agency.”

‘Worst Fast Agency’ Pledges to Give Clients Quick, Terrible Advice for $1

Just one week ago, prolific guerrilla-marketer Floyd Hayes introduced us to his latest project, “World’s Fastest Agency.” The first (to our knowledge) Twitter-based creative agency, Hayes’ new shop answered creative briefs via Twitter within 24 hours for a cool $999. Well, we knew (maybe) that it would only be a matter of time before the World’s Fastest Agency spawned an imitator or two.

Enter “Worst Fast Agency“, an anonymously run Twitter-based creative shop that pledges to do what World’s Fastest Agency does in half the time for a fraction of the price. Oh, and did we mention that it gives terrible advice? Yes, in just 12 hours, Worst Fast Agency will tweet awful marketing strategies to you for the low price of $1. It sounds almost too awful to be true.

In an anonymous tip, the shadowy founder of WFA tells us, “I just launched this company the other day, and have already received loads of requests and interactions (have actually made $$$). Sure, it is somewhat of a joke/parody, but I believe there is a market for clear, bad advice, not just bad advice masquerading as good advice.” Think about it—it’s feasible that this person has made like $20 doing this! Peep WFA’s website to read some very plausible client reviews, and tweet @WorstFastAgency to receive your own terrible advice.

Self-Proclaimed ‘Ideas Man’ Back with Self-Proclaimed ‘World’s Fastest Agency’

Floyd Hayes, former ECD at guerrilla-marketing agency Cunning is back with yet another attention-grabbing stunt that will (perhaps) net him upward of $1000 per day.

Hayes latest project, World’s Fastest Agency, serves as a pleasant reminder to all marketers that, yes, you can make any unsubstantiated claim you want, so long as no one else has made the claim before you. Hayes’ business model works thusly:

  1. Send him $999 via PayPal.
  2. Direct message your short creative brief to @fastestagency on Twitter
  3. Receive a creative pitch within 24 hours via Twitter direct message
  4. Consider whether or not steps 1-3 were a wise use of your time and money

On the website for his new agency, which he also proclaims to be “the world’s first 100% Twitter based ad agency,”  Hayes has already a glowing review from Neil Davies (pitch judge and former partner at Naked Communications) who says, “Very fast, very good.” I mean, what else do you need to know?
