Machine learning is reinventing marketingand a growing number of marketers know it. According to recent research from the IBM Institute for Business Value, 91 percent of marketers at companies that outperform their competitors believe AI is important to the future of their organizations.

At the same time, only about a quarter of them use AI today. Industry analysts report artificial intelligence empowers businesses to mine and interpret valuable data and make stronger connections with their customers. Yet most still aren’t applying AI to their marketing strategies.

A few highlights: Walmart wants you to know that you can order gifts online as late as 4 p.m. on Dec. 23 and then pick them up in-store on Christmas Eve. Robitussin serves up another installment in its continuing campaign with the tagline “It’s never just a cough.” And Wendy’s wants you to celebrate National Maple Syrup Day (Monday, Dec. 17) by eating a Bacon Maple Chicken Sandwich.

Verizon signals demise of AOL-Yahoo experiment with writedown


Verizon is conceding defeat on its crusade to turn a patchwork of dot-com-era businesses into a thriving online operation.

The wireless carrier slashed the value of its AOL and Yahoo acquisitions by $4.6 billion, an acknowledgment that tough competition for digital advertising is leading to shortfalls in revenue and profit.

The move will erase almost half the value of the division it had been calling Oath, which houses AOL, Yahoo and other businesses like the Huffington Post.
