What Facebook's nudity and hate report tells marketers about brand safety


Facebook for the first time is revealing how much nudity, graphic violence and terrorist-inspired posts appear on the social network.

The numbers Facebook revealed in its report on the first quarter Tuesday shows the prevalence of this type of content on Facebook, says Guy Rosen, VP of product management. Facebook applied similar methods to measure nudity and violence as it uses to measure ad visibility for brandsin this case trying to calculate how often “bad” posts, rather than ads, are viewable.

“In the advertising space, an impression is something we’re familiar with,” Rosen says. “The really important part of this is bad content actually being viewed? Does something actually show up on someone’s screen? How often does that happen and what percent of things that show up on a screen are actually things that violate our standards?”

Upfronts Diary: Jimmy Pitaro makes his debut at ESPN's sales pitch, while Kenny Mayne skewers the ad biz


ESPN had a number of objectives in mind as it hammered out its 2018-19 upfront presentation, its first major sales pitch since the departure of John Skipper. Not only did the network seek to use the big show to introduce its new president, Jimmy Pitaro, but it also looked to pound the singular advantages of buying inventory in live sports, while leaving enough time to allow Kenny Mayne to launch into his annual goof on the state of the advertising industry.

A master of the art of projecting an aura of nonchalance that forever threatens to mutate into complete indifference, the puckish Mayne usurped Pitaro’s big introduction, wandering out onto the stage at Broadway’s Minskoff Theatre as the new president was given his cue to greet the crowd of advertisers.

“All the money deals run through me now,” Mayne announced, before rattling off some of the highlights of his rsum to the disbelieving crowd. “You don’t think I can handle this responsibility? I went to Wenatchee Valley Community College! I went to UNLV, which is sort of the Harvard of the west.”

Unsurprisingly, ABC will bring its springtime hit “Roseanne” back in the fall next season in an effort to boost the network’s ratings early. The alphabet’s plans, which it announced Tuesday morning, include keeping TGIT intact with Shonda Rhimes programming and leaving freshman success “The Good Doctor” at 10 p.m. on Monday nights.

Pre-gaming the upfronts, ESPN touts digital chops to shops


To hear Rex Ryan talk football to a room crammed with enthusiastic young people without once uttering the word “fuck” is like filing out of a Springsteen concert and realizing the band never played “Born to Run.” On this cool spring day in New York, the merrily profane former NFL head coach has scrubbed his speech of any corrosive elements, this despite the efforts of the guy in the audience who tries to goad Ryan by invoking the Butt Fumble.

It’s Wednesday, March 28, and Ryan is perched on a Lucite chair on the third floor of IPG Mediabrands’ Herald Square digs, where he’s joined by fellow ESPN football insiders Trey Wingo and Dan Graziano. While the panelists are for the most part fixated on the mechanics of next month’s NFL Draft, most of the Magna staffers in attendance are more interested in Ryan’s tragicomic tenure as head coach of the New York Jets. Asked about his immediate reaction to the Thanksgiving 2012 play in which Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez coughed up the football after sprinting headlong into the rear end of 305-pound right guard Brandon Moore, Ryan is quick to censor himself.

“Me being me, let’s use the beep right now, and several times over,” he cracks to an audience of media buyers. “Because it was like, ‘What are you doing, dude?’ I mean, oh my goodness!”
