BMW hires Goodby as lead creative agency in US


BMW has appointed Goodby, Silverstein & Partners as its lead creative agency in the U.S., following a competitive review.

The finalists in the pitch, which was handled by Roth Ryan Hayes, included Goodby, Droga5, Wieden & Kennedy, Anomaly and Hill Holliday. Representatives from Goodby, Roth Ryan Hayes and BMW were not immediately available for comment.

The incumbent agency was MDC Partners-owned KBS. The shop over the last year had steadily lost other pieces of the brand’s U.S. business. In December 2016, BMW handed web development to Omnicom’s Critical Mass after a review that was also run by Roth Ryan Hayes. Critical Mass’ relationship with BMW was not affected by the recent creative review. The creative review began in late October.

Carolyn Everson, VP of global marketing solutions at Facebook, says she actually started her fix-it tour (our words) days before CEO Mark Zuckerberg ventured out to speak on the Cambridge Analytica affair. She called the company’s top advertisers on Saturday, the day after the company first acknowledged the harvesting of data from some 50 million Facebook users by Cambridge Analytica. On Monday, she sent an email to a wider circle of advertisersan email some agency exces tell Ad Age was formulaic.

Mozilla and Pep Boys have said they are pulling spending on Facebook ads because of its apparent carelessness with data, and Sonos is suspending Facebook advertising for a week in support of data privacy. And the #deletefacebook movement is starting to swell. On Friday, Silicon Valley darling Elon Musk–who has a history of social media tit for tats with Zuckerbergrequested that the pages for his companies Space X and Tesla be taken down.

Everson spoke with Ad Age by phone late in the day on Thursday. The conversation has been edited.

March for our Lives: Anti-violence creative goes on billboards countrywide


Earlier this month, Ad Age partnered with the Gun Safety Alliance to help support the efforts of the students marching in Washington and across the country during March for Our Lives on March 24.

When we put out a call to the creative community to create posters and social media imagery to help amplify the March for Our Lives message, the community answered. We received more than 100 powerful pieces of art calling for an end to gun violence in our schools. All week, Ad Age has been sharing these posters and social media imagery. You can see (and download) them here.

On Friday, the effort got an added boost in the form of over 1,000 digital billboards across the United States — in California, Connecticut, New Jersey, Illinois, Michigan, Kansas and Florida — including several towering placements in New York City’s Times Square.
