Energy BBDO Chief Creative Officer Resigns

Energy BBDO Chief Creative Officer Mark Taylor is leaving, the agency said Friday.

Mr. Taylor has resigned because of personal reasons, effective immediately, the shop said in a statement. “There are no plans to replace Mr. Taylor at this time,” the statement said. “His responsibilities will be assumed internally by the agency’s existing group of executive creative directors.”

Mr. Taylor’s exit comes after Bud Light earlier this month moved its business from BBDO to Wieden & Kennedy. BBDO first won Bud Light in June 2013, later adding Bud Light Platinum and other line extensions in 2014.

Do Not Track Is Finally Coming, but not as Originally Planned

The long-awaited Do Not Track system is coming soon, but it’s a shell of its former self.

It seems like ages since former Federal Trade Commission Chairman Jon Liebowitz stunned the digital ad industry in December 2010 by calling for a universal Do-Not-Track system. Since then, privacy and tech wonks at the Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C) — the global organization that took the helm in developing the would-be technology — have slogged through a tedious process to devise a standardized system that would alert users to online tracking and allow them to opt out from it.

Meanwhile, the industry trade coalition Digital Advertising Alliance pushed its own self-regulatory opt-out tool into ubiquity. The DAA’s system allowing people to opt out — not always from tracking, but from ad targeting — is represented by the triangular blue icon seen in countless display ads across the web. Clicking the icon takes people to more information about the companies tracking them and lets them opt out from receiving targeted ads.

Here's Why Biking With a Helmet Is a No Brainer

Every weekday, we bring you the Ad Age/iSpot Hot Spots, new and trending TV commercials tracked by iSpot.tv, a company that catalogs, tags and measures activity around TV ads in real time. The New Releases here ran on TV for the first time yesterday. The Most Engaging ads are showing sustained social heat, ranked by SpotShare scores reflecting the percent of digital activity associated with each one over the past week. See the methodology here.

From a bike-friendly airbag to a “watch out” turtle, kids will try anything to avoid wearing a helmet. But as each handmade invention fails, the safety promotion from Nationwide encourages children to cover their heads. The insurance company goes for comedy this time, a wise move considering the backlash to its “Dead Boy” Super Bowl ad, which was part of the same #makesafehappen campaign. Among the other new releases, Apple continues to promote the Apple Watch with its new spot “Berlin,” and Walmart reminds us to “celebrate summer, wherever the road takes you.”

Nike shows us what it’s like to be the guy everyone depends on. And Google’s “The Story of Jacob and City Gym,” ranked as the No. 4 most engaging spot after launching locally during the Espys. The emotional spot documents Jacob’s journey transitioning from female to male, and the confidence he gained through the experience.

British creative team wants to give your award the Legendary Lion Tour

There’s a crazy creative team across the pond who asked a question to the British Advertising Industry this week: “Would you give away your precious Cannes Lion to two total strangers?”
The goal is to create the most Legendary Lion ever.

Sandrine Gautheret and David Felton are departing from London to NYC at the end of July, and are offering a space in their luggage to turn one special Lion into a celebrity.

Copywriter David Felton explained it thusly: “The idea here is that you’ve dreamed about winning that award, and you’ve worked hard for it. Now it’s time to make it work for you. We’re looking for an agency that’s willing to take a risk instead of just leaving their Lion on a shelf. We want to transform one Lion into a global icon, sending it on trip of a lifetime,”

But will any UK agency decide to trust them with a precious Lion?

“We hope so” said New York-based creative Mate Nagy. “We offer agencies much more than just daily snaps of their shiny award. They can ask us to visit their clients’ and partners’ offices and show that creative work can keep winning attention, too. One agency will be making a stand in the recent debate about whether award-winning ads will even be remembered in a few years.”

That last bit makes this more than just an Amelie gnome bit. Visiting the client’s offices with it is a bit like bringing the Stanley Cup to the local hockey rink, not only in terms of PR, but in terms of aspiration. Kind of a “See? You already have one in your office. Now start doing work that wins them.”
