KFC Resurrects Colonel Sanders for Brand Revamp
Posted in: UncategorizedFast food chains can’t seem to be getting enough of resurrecting dormant mascots.
First McDonald’s brought back a slimmed-down Hamburglar for a limited-time promotion, and now KFC, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, is bringing back Colonel Sanders, who has been dead for nearly 35 years. According to a spokeswoman, the Colonel — or actors who played him — hasn’t appeared in ads since 1994, though an animated version of him ran until 1998. Consumers will see the new Colonel online, in social media, on broadcast and in stores as part of an effort to update the chain’s image.
The brand refresh is the first major work from KFC’s new agency, Wieden & Kennedy, which picked up the account earlier this year from FCB. The push includes a marketing blitz with the new Colonel played by “Saturday Night Live” alum Darrell Hammond, store remodels, new packaging, new menu items, a new KFC.com and a “reinvented” ColonelSanders.com, which gives the history of the Colonel in all his different iterations.
21st Century Fox to Review Global Media Agency Business
Posted in: UncategorizedGlobal media company 21st Century Fox is reviewing its worldwide media buying and planning business across its massive film, TV and home entertainment groups, the company said Monday evening.
The New York-based film and TV giant spent $767.48 million on U.S. measured media in 2014, according to Kantar Media. Globally, it’s spending exceeds $1 billion, said a person familiar with the company.
“We are getting great service from all of our current agency partners so this review is not about performance or cost,” said a spokeswoman. “The rules of consumer engagement in our business are shifting quickly and dramatically. After more than 10 years since our last company-wide global review, we are going through this process to ensure we have the right agency partners who are best equipped to work with us to reimagine the future of marketing for 21st Century Fox’s leading brands.”
Drone Puppies With a Message Take Flight on Viral Video Chart
Posted in: UncategorizedConsidering the web’s fascination with puppies and drones, it’s no surprise that a spot featuring puppies delivered by drones has landed on the Viral Video Chart, which tracks views of campaigns in the week ending each Sunday, as compiled by Visible Measures.
But what some may find surprising is the somewhat dark turn the spot takes toward the end as The Humane Society of the United States drives its point home: puppies are not products to be ordered online with same-day delivery. (In fact, you probably shouldn’t even joke about it, as GoDaddy learned with its ill-fated Super Bowl ad earlier this year.)
Duracell’s spot featuring climber Kevin Jorgeson remains at the top of the viral mountain for the second week in a row. And the Coneheads (Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtin) join Jake from State Farm to put State Farm on the chart.

Posted in: UncategorizedGrey Wins P&G Grooming
Posted in: UncategorizedProcter & Gamble has awarded the business for its various grooming brands to Grey. Yesterday Adweek’s Andrew McMains reported that the company had chosen to move its Venus, Art of Shaving and Braun accounts to the WPP shop, which already won Gillette back in 2013.
All four brands had previously been with BBDO.
A client spokesperson told McMains that the move was not a reflection on BBDO’s performance and reassured AdAge that the shop “will continue to remain a P&G roster agency in good standing”; BBDO still produces mostly international campaigns for P&G brands like Pantene.
More from the AdAge statement:
“We’re consolidating our grooming business to one lead agency to facilitate deeper category mastery, and to more effectively integrate creative execution across consumer touch points to build our brands.”
Translation: P&G, like Kraft and so many other large clients, is doubling down on digital…and its executives aren’t feeling particularly generous at the moment.
Here’s the internal memo from Grey Chairman/CEO Jim Heekin:
We received the terrific news that Procter & Gamble has named Grey its sole lead agency in the Grooming category.
In this consolidation, we have been awarded the global creative responsibility for three outstanding brands: the Venus women’s shaving line, Braun razors and The Art of Shaving line in addition to our global Gillette business.
This is a tremendous vote of confidence from our longtime partner as we prepare to celebrate our 60th anniversary with P&G next year.
P&G has said this move will enable them to better leverage the power of their entire grooming portfolio and we intend to exceed all their expectations.
Congratulations to our entire P&G team and special thanks to our Famously Effective Gillette team who has taken the brand to new creative heights in every channel. Our deepest thanks go to a great client.
McKinney Brings Back Kristen and Dax for Samsung
Posted in: UncategorizedFollowing “Home for the Holidays,” McKinney’s holiday spot for the Samsung Galaxy Tab S starring Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, the agency has brought the Hollywood couple back for a pair of spots showing off Samsung’s home appliances.
In “Crushing Dinner Parties with Samsung Home Appliances,” Kristen and Dax frantically prepare for a dinner party for “six adults, four toddlers and a baby” (or, as Dax puts it, “We’ll host a circus.”). The 60-second spot shows how, with help from Samsung appliances, the seemingly impossible task is not all that hard. In fact, it’s easy enough that when all their friends cancel on them, Kristen and Dax don’t even seem to mind. Another spot shows Samsung’s Activewash Top Load Washer coming to the rescue when their baby’s stuffed doll, Lamby, takes a juice box to the face. The approach is very much the same as with McKinnney’s previous spots starring the couple: integrating Samsung products into snippets designed to portray the couple’s everyday life. If you found the cuteness overload too much to take before, you’d be advised to skip these. If, on the other hand, you can’t get enough of Kristen and Dax, there’s also a behind-the-scenes clip that runs almost ten minutes long (featured below, following the Samsung Activewash spot).

Posted in: UncategorizedNewly Formed Mullen Lowe Group Names Lee Newman Its U.S. CEO
Posted in: UncategorizedLee Newman, president at Ogilvy’s Chicago office, has been named the U.S. CEO for the newly formed Mullen Lowe Group, two weeks after the merger of Interpublic’s Mullen and Lowe.
Mr. Newman will report to Mullen Lowe Global CEO Alex Leikikh, who was Mullen’s top executive until the formation of the new global network. He’ll work with U.S. Chief Creative Officer Mark Wenneker and oversee the Boston, Los Angeles and North Carolina offices of what had been Mullen along with the former Lowe office in New York. He will be based in Los Angeles.
Mr. Newman comes to Mullen Lowe from Ogilvy Chicago, where he’d been president since 2012. No successor will be named, Ogilvy said, and his duties will be assumed by Chairman-CEO Jack Rooney. Mr. Newman had previously been managing director at Wieden & Kennedy’s Amsterdam office, where he oversaw teams that worked on Nike, Coke, Heineken and P&G.

Posted in: UncategorizedKristen Bell, Dax Shepard Kill You With Cuteness in Their Latest Samsung Ads
Posted in: Uncategorized
For those who couldn’t get enough of Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard in their hit Samsung Galaxy Tab S holiday ad, the hyper-cute Hollywood couple—married in real-life—have returned for an encore, this time plugging the company’s high-tech home appliances.
In a minute-long spot, the actors—known for Parenthood (Shepard) and House of Lies (Bell), among other projects—are planning a big dinner party. And naturally, Samsung’s refrigerators, ranges, dishwashers, washing machines and vacuum bots prove invaluable. A 30-second commercial focuses on their efforts to clean an infant’s toy bunny using Samsung’s Activewash Top Load Washer.
McKinney created the ads, and Tucker Gates directs in a suitably off-the-cuff, relaxed style.
Bell and Shepard also appear in a nearly 10-minute behind-the-scenes/interview clip. That’s right—10 minutes! Highlights come when Bell says Samsung ovens are “almost like Transformers” because of their dual-temperature functionality (sorry, Optimus Prime) and Shepard briefly discusses his involvement in the upcoming feature-film reboot of ’70s highway-cop series “CHiPS” (give Erik Estrada a cameo!).
brightcove.createExperiences();
Throughout the campaign, Bell and Shepard are adorably affable, showing off the time-and-labor-saving technology with effortless élan, perfectly cast as bubbly brand ambassadors for the millennial generation.
The 90-second version of their holiday spot got 13 million YouTube views, so clearly the work is connecting with its audience. Still, the couple’s cuteness is, at times, so overwhelmingly insufferable that I kind of wanted to stick my head inside that snazzy Samsung fridge and bash my brains in with the door.
