The Structure of Human Thought

What’s most insidious is the human-centric ideology of science.

On the one hand, it insists that human consciousness is nothing special, and should be naturalized just like everything else. On the other hand, it also wants to preserve knowledge as a special kind of relation to the world quite different from the relations that raindrops and lizards have to the world. Another way of putting it … for all their gloating over the fact that people are pieces of matter just like everything else, they also want to claim that the very status of the utterance is somehow special. For them, raindrops know nothing and lizards know very little, and some humans are more knowledgeable than others. This is only possible because thought is given a unique ability to negate and transcend immediate experience, which inanimate matter is never alllowed to do in such theories, of course. In short, for all its noir claims that the human doesn’t exist, it elevates the structure of human thought to the ontological pinnacle.

LinkedIn Sells Nearly Half a Bill Dollars in Ads Last Year

LinkedIn’s advertising revenue reached $153 million in the fourth quarter, a 56% increase over the same time the year prior, the company said Thursday. Advertising, which LinkedIn calls “marketing solutions,” comprised 24% of its total revenue compared with 22% in the fourth quarter of 2013.

Full-year advertising revenue in 2014 was $454.5 million, up 46% from the prior year.

LinkedIn’s content-marketing product “sponsored updates” — which allows advertisers to place their blog posts on LinkedIn members home pages — fueled the increase. Content marketing is now one-third of total advertising revenue, LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner said during a call with investors to explain the company’s fourth-quarter and full-year 2014 earnings.

Mars Bar (Finally) Brings Together Dogs, Pan Pipes and the Miami Vice Soundtrack

In case you doubted that absurdist advertising is now the go-to approach for candy companies, this new spot for Mars Bar should be a good reminder.

Created by U.K. agency AMV BBDO, “Winning” features a soulless ginger who’s trained his dog to jump, only to be outdone by the guy with a Mars Bar.

The ad hits all the typical checkpoints for a modern zany ad: funny animals, a surreal punchline that takes too long to deliver and a retro reference to the 1980s (the song is Crockett’s Theme from Miami Vice).

“Winning” isn’t a bad effort, even if it is built around an Internet term that quickly wore out its welcome four years ago.
