'I Can't Breathe': Walmart Edits Ad in Wake of Protests

In the wake of nationwide protests over the lack of an indictment for the death of Eric Garner, Walmart is editing a commercial showing a black man saying “I can’t breathe” as he’s hugged by his daughter.

The same phrase was adopted by protesters nationwide after a grand jury on Dec. 3 declined to indict police officer Daniel Pantaleo for the death of Eric Garner, who uttered the phrase in a video aired in news reports following his July arrest. That video has gotten round-the-clock national news play since the grand jury decision.

In response to tweets yesterday, the @WalmartNewsroom account announced: “We’re re-editing as we speak based on feedback we’ve received.”

CHI&Partners Celebrates Holiday “#ColourInvasion” for Carphone Warehouse

CHI&Partners launched a new holiday campaign for Carphone Warehouse enititled “#ColourInvasion” promoting the large number of color exclusives available in its stores for the holiday season.

The spot is set in a dark, gloomy seaside town that (as you may have guessed from the title) receives a sudden invasion of color. That color arrives courtesy of a group of bikers, all decked out in colorful clothing to create a kind of motorcycle chain rainbow. Keeping things on the minimalist side, the spot lets the color speak for itself, without any intrusion from voiceover. The campaign is running online on Carphone Warehouse’s YouTubeFacebook and Twitter channels, as well as the brand’s online content hub, The Lowdown. Yesterday the rband also launched a competioon across its social channels, affording customers the opportunity to win an “exclusively colored handset every day for two weeks” and the chance to win a grand prize of a Harley Davidson 883 Matte Black Roadster.

“The work is an epic, vibrant, dollop of colour hitting Britain’s shores with impact,” said Rob Webster and Alexei Berwitz, creative directors at CHI&Partners, in a press release. “Here, the team have created a campaign which is as joyously simple as the brief that inspired it.” (more…)

An 18-Wheeler Jumps Over a Racecar in EMC's Gnarly, Record-Setting Stunt

Data storage and cloud computing company EMC, which sponsors Formula 1 racing, recently sent an 18-wheeler careening over a racecar in an epic, world-record setting jump … because awesome.

It’s one of those records you have to see to believe because large trucks are not known for their grace, outside of Jean-Claude Van Damme videos, or their jumping capability.

EMC is a technical partner for the Lotus F1 team. And it’s made a ton of pretty videos about its role in designing the E22 car that meets the new F1 regulations and the technical services it provides the team. It’s pretty good content.

But the big rig jumping over an F1 car? That’s been viewed 10 million times in just a few weeks. Not to mention there’s a behind-the-scenes video where you learn fun facts like how they gutted the interior of the semi to make sure it wouldn’t catch on fire, and get to watch the door fly open on the big rig while the driver, who is in some awesome space-age bungie harness almost falls out.

You can even see stunt driver, Martin Ivanov, spin the F1 car out after the jump and say it was scary. But also, joy and happiness.

EMC is no stranger to the world record breaking model of viral advertising. In 2011, it fit 26 people inside a Mini Cooper. In 2013, it sent Parker Liautaud on a record-breaking walk—he became the youngest man to walk unsupported 397 miles to the South Pole.

Neither of those stunts received nearly as many views. I guess it just goes to show that when it comes to world records, not all are created equal.

Sprint Slices at Verizon, AT&T in Latest National Ads

On Tuesday, Sprint announced another price offering, its most ambitious yet. Over the weekend, the carrier will begin a national ad campaign to promote the deal, which directly targets larger rivals Verizon and AT&T.

Sprint has unleashed a torrent of new customer plans — and varying marketing materials — since CEO Marcelo Claure joined in August. Its latest move promises to halve the service bills for Verizon and AT&T subscribers who convert to Sprint, a stunt to hemorrhage its steady customer loss. The carrier is also offering to pay early termination fees for subscribers who switch, a move T-Mobile made in January.

Beginning Friday evening, a 30-second spot will air during prime-time on national networks and cable. The carrier is also releasing print ads and a Spanish-language spot, which will begin airing this weekend. Two weeks ago, Sprint kicked off a Hispanic marketing campaign, with ads featuring Mr. Claure.
