Best Practices: How to Woo Mobile Daters

More brand advertisers may soon join the online dating fray, lured by a fast-growing, engaged consumer segment.

IPG Media Lab has released a report advising advertisers chasing those consumers who have shifted online dating to smartphones. The report follows a similar white paper IPG, part of the Interpublic Group, published in April on social messaging apps. Mobile dating, the report claims, is tracing a similar trajectory of rapid growth, commanding increasing attention from young audiences. It’s a shift marketers can’t ignore.

“Here’s another group of apps that are forming their own media ecosystem based purely on its size,” said Melvin Wilson, head of strategy at IPG Media Lab and co-author of the report.

Stop What Your Doing And Watch This Inspirational Video Right Now!

idea_catchers.jpg

It’s not often we get inspirational reminders of what we should be doing rather than what we are doing in life. If you’re in the creative business, take two minutes to watch this video, The Idea Catchers, from DDB Group Asia Pacific.

In this video, you will see all the great ad classics you would expect to see in such a compilation coupled with motivational copy about thinkers who “live on an alien planet in other people’s shoes” and “life experiences resulting in an idea you had never thought of yet totally wish you had.”

Writing anything about this video doesn’t do it justice. Just watch. And them dream. And create.

Superheroes are no different…

These Old Spice Ads Might Get Us to Laugh at A Hapless Mandroid But They Still Paint Women As Mindless Bimbos

old_spice_mandroid.jpg

So everyone’s loving these new Old Spice commercials featuring a less than functional android man who, despite his inadequacies, is a hit with the ladies because, well, he wears Old Spice and smells great. The two ads, created by Wieden + Kennedy, are being compared to Axe work because, well, they focus on man magnets who always get the ladies.

At the same time, and no one is really mentioning this, the ads, much like Axe ads, treat women like idiotic bimbos easily controlled by a fragrance even though it’s being worn by a scrawny wimp or a klutzy robot.

Nothing that, we wonder if w’ve really progressed past posing women in front of refrigerators and draping them across the hoods or cars all in the name of selling things. I

It would seem even in ads which portray men as buckets of buffoonery, the ladies are still mindless bimbos who are at the beck and call of men even though these men have no redeeming qualities other than the ability to make us chuckle while watching them in ads.

Calvin Klein Has A Thing For Underage Girls. It's Latest: Kate Moss' Little Sister, Lottie

lottie_moss_calvin_klein.jpg

I had a crush on a cute redhead named Lettie Roberts in junior high school. But that’s not at all relevant to this piece other than the fact Lettie sounds like Lottie. Who’s Lottie? Lottie is Kate Moss’ 16-year-old younger sister who is currently featured in the latest Calvin Klein campaign, shot by Michael Avedon, grandson to Richard Avedon who shot another very young girl, 15-year-old Brooke Shields, for a 1981 Calvin Klein campaign.

All of which brings up the fact Calvin Klein has a thing for underage girls. OK, to be fair, most fashion brands have had that thing since the whole sexification of of young girls began with, perhaps, that 1981 Brooke Shields ad.

We’re not going to get into a whole pro/con thing about marketers leveraging sex to sell stuff because we’ve done that countless times before. Suffice to say, even though we are making strides in one direction with women crashing through the glass ceiling, we are still treating them like cute little objects who “throw like a girl” before then even dream of crashing through that ceiling.

The Vulnerable Stage of Adolescence
