Joinery Launches in L.A.. Pleix Joins Skunk, Golden Opens in Venice and More


Gerard Cantor, former EP at Believe Media, film producer Richard Gladstein and directors Paul and Leslie Dektor have teamed up to launch new production company Joinery, based in Los Angeles.

Mr. Cantor, who was at Believe Media for 13 years, will serve as managing director. Mr. Gladstein has produced feature films such as “Pulp Fiction,” “Cider House Rules,” “The Bourne Identity” and “Finding Neverland” and will take on the role as executive producer of longform. Veteran director Leslie Dektor will be a partner in the firm.

Founding director Paul Dektor will be joined on the roster by Rob Feng, Lasse Hallstrom, David Masters, Only Child, Bo Platt, film/motion design studio Weareflink and video artists Objective. The Joinery team will also be home to Digital Producers Peter Mertz and Alvaro Chacon. Mr. Mertz previously worked as Director of Digital at TBWA/Media Arts Lab, Zambezi and Rock, Paper, Scissors, while Mr. Chacon also worked at TBWA/MAL and Zambezi, as senior digital producer.

The beverage brand is launching its biggest-ever campaign — “The World’s Cup” — created for the 2014 FIFA World Cup that will be played in Brazil starting June 12. Rival Pepsi has also launched a global soccer campaign.

At the centerpiece of the campaign is “One World, One Game,” a film that will go live around the world Wednesday. Created by Wieden & Kennedy, Sao Paulo, the film invites young people from around the world to attend the cup. Those invited included people from an isolated community in the Amazon, to the city of Ramallah in Palestine, and those from the tsunami-ravaged area of Otsuchi in Japan.

Brazilians Pose Nude to Protest Widespread Belief That Rape Is Justified

We've seen #nomakeupselfies and #cockinasock, all in the name of cancer awareness, but the latest in viral activist hashtags is #EuNaoMereçoSerEstrupada, which translates to #IDontDeserveToBeRaped.

In a survey done by Brazil's Institute of Applied Economic Research, an astonishing 65.1 percent partly agreed with the statement that if a women is provocatively dressed, she deserves to be sexually assaulted. The results were met with public outcry—spearheaded by Brazilian journalist Nana Queiroz (shown above), and since, women have been posting photos of themselves partially nude with signs stating "I don't deserved to be raped," and, "No women deserved to be raped."

The survey results revealed other shocking information: 58.5 percent of people surveyed in Brazil agreed with the statement "If women knew how to behave, there would be less rape." In case you think the survey is an indictment of Brazilian men, it's worth noting that two-thirds of the respondents were women.

(Translation: "No woman deserves to be raped. I am ashamed of being a man and having to say something so obvious.")
