Jack Honomichl, Who Defined Market Research Industry, Dies at 85

Jack Honomichl, former Advertising Age columnist, founder of the trade journal Inside Research, and a man who literally defined the market-research industry as creator of its only top-company ranking, died Dec. 8 after a long illness. He was 85.

Laurence Gold, Editor and Publisher of Inside Research, who bought the publication in 1993, said Mr. Honomichl helped define an industry that had been “shrouded in the fog of obscurity” when he first started compiling what would become the “Honomichl 50” listing of top U.S. research companies in 1973.

That came after he’d launched the industry’s first trade journal, The Analyst, in 1969, and then soon after began writing the first of hundreds of The Research Beat columns for Advertising Age over 18 years.

What Does CEO Shift Mean for GM Agencies?

With the naming of Mary Barra as the CEO of General Motors, the first question for adland — as is often the case with executive changes — was, “What does this mean for agencies?”

As of Jan. 15, 2014, the 51-year old Ms. Barra will succeed current CEO Dan Akerson, 65, who’ll retire early to care for his cancer-stricken wife.

But will that bring changes on the Detroit automaker’s $3 billion U.S. ad budget?

CBS Chief Les Moonves Still Wants to Charge for Ads a Month Later

CBS Corp. CEO Leslie Moonves said again that the broadcaster will eventually get advertisers to pay for commercials that are viewed as long as a month after they originally air.

Marketers now typically pay for commercial viewing over three days, a standard known as C3, and broadcasters are trying expand that to C7. But earlier this year Mr. Moonves went far beyond that to pitch C30.

He pressed that case on Tuesday at the annual UBS Global Media and Communications Conference.

Conan O’Brien Fails to Learn How to Audition for TV Commercials

America's gangliest talk-show host takes on TV-commercial auditions in this skit. With the help of Killian's Workshop, Conan O'Brien—not always the most comfortable commercial endorser—reads some copy about shrimp that sounds like Jerry Seinfeld's stand-up act ("Is it 21 shrimp, or 21 shrimps?"), turns the Bite and Smile into an exploration of possibly being gay, and drives an invisible car—all while trying not to look like a total spaz. Which is to say, he tries very hard to look like a total spaz.

Thirteen minutes is a bit long for the concept they're running with here, but Conan's ruthless derision of corny ad tropes strikes gold more than once; the shrimp/shrimps-induced mental breakdown and naming the invisible car the "Ford Delusion" are two highlights. And for the record, both "shrimp" and "shrimps" are acceptable plurals.

Time Warner CEO Says ‘Spotty’ Promotion for VOD Is Leaving an Opening for Others

Forecasters may predict that TV will soon peak as digital media rises, but Time Warner isn’t seeing signs of that shift yet, CEO Jeff Bewkes said at the annual UBS Global Media and Communications Conference on Tuesday.

“There’s not much going on there right now,” Mr. Bewkes said of TV ad dollars moving to digital.

Two recent forecasts have said that digital ad spending will erode TV ad budgets over the next several years.
