The Famously Grouchy Lou Reed Had Good Words for Adland

Lou Reed, the music revolutionary who reformed rock with the Velvet Underground, died Sunday at 71. Creativity aside, Mr. Reed had a few ties to adland — an endorser for one product, and a defender of the industry as one of the few “fair” to artists. The latter

In 1985, Mr. Reed became a pitchman, representing Honda scooters. One TV execution, shot in New York’s Lower East Side during a far grittier time, used his classic “Walk on the Wild Side” to great creative, if not commercial, success. Mr. Reed, revealed at the end of the commercial sitting atop a scooter, delivers the line: “Hey, don’t settle for walkin.'”

David Halberstam shared an excerpt from his book “Playing for Keeps” — which chronicled the rise of basketball star Michael Jordan — with Advertising Age in 1999, describing the ad Mr. Reed starred in and its strangely captivating flavor:

Is This the World’s Chattiest, Cattiest Corporate Twitter Account?

When a product or service is less than stellar, people often take their complaints to Twitter instead of suffering through an automated call. While many brands respond with a buttoned-up tweet asking you to call their customer-care line, Britain's Tesco Mobile has taken to trolling its trolls in hilarious LOL-speak, snark and thinly veiled insults.

When @JayFeliipe tweeted "Immediate turnoff if a girl's mobile network is tesco mobile," Tesco replied: "Are you really in a position to be turning girls away?" That quip has been retweeted more than 6,000 times, and the company has since sent @JayFeliipe a gift for being so good-natured about getting publicly burned on the Internet.

The banter between Tesco and its followers has been so entertaining that its Twitter numbers and engagement have since exploded. See the full feed (i.e., with replies) here.

Ikea Creates Platform for Customers to Sell Their Second-Hand Furniture

Ikea goods aren’t exactly the sturdiest known to man, but the retailer recently set up a platform through which its customers could find a new home for the Besta, Hemnes, Malm or other pieces they’re ready to part ways with. Working with SMFB, Oslo — known for its unusual campaigns for the client (like one that engaged customers to help the brand when it was moving a store and another that let shoppers choose the type of ad they wanted to see via a web banner) — the retailer launched “The Second Hand Campaign,” an integrated effort that advertised customers’ used Ikea products through outdoor, print, broadcast and web banners.

The agency and Ikea put a call out to its patrons, asking if they needed help selling their used goods. Many people responded and 50 were chosen for the campaign. Ikea gathered their used pieces and produced real ads using those goods. Alongside pictures of the second-hand items were printed the owners’ actual phone numbers for potential buyers to call. Outside of the ads, Ikea’s Facebook page became a digital flea market where sellers and buyers could do business every Sunday.

The effort ran for eight weeks, resulting in the sale of every used product.

Obsessive Rationality Disorder

The epidemic of the west.

From Adbusters #110: The Epic Human Journey: Part 3, Endless Summer

René Maltête

from the DSM-V

HISTORY AND IDENTITY

Formerly known as cognitive compartmentalization syndrome, Obsessive Rationality Disorder (ORD) is a condition wherein emotion and feeling become detached from cognitive processes and social interactions. Sufferers are driven by progressively irresistible impulses toward exactitude, order and logic. Daily tasks and household chores are inspected and refined. Efficiency in all aspects of life becomes an obsession. Originally thought to be a condition unique to the West, mass social manifestations can now be located throughout the world.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DISORDER

In early stages, ORD manifests itself in the desire to suppress existential uncertainty with scientific and mathematical exactitude. Fascination, mystery and the unknown are repressed – first consciously – and then unconsciously.

Over the course of the affliction, the coping dimension of the disease transforms from extreme discomfort to mild pleasure, making withdrawal painful and neurologically degenerative. Those with advanced symptoms often seek out positions of power and influence. Empathetic and altruistic pleasure centers of the brain shutdown.

In economic and political circles, unhealthy and destructive fixations with profit margins, scientific certainty and mathematical proofs substitute intuitive, ethical and moral considerations. At this stage, detachment from the natural and experiential world is complete and successful treatment outcomes are rare. If not for the pervasiveness of acute-stage ORD, mass institutionalization would be the recommended treatment. Rapture is the only known cure.

The Whole Pumpkin Spice Craze Has Reached Its Logical (Insane) Conclusion

“Fall is officially here,” observes the perky narrator of this new “Saturday Night Live” commercial spoof, which debuted over the weekend. “Which means it’s finally time to enjoy all those uniquely fall flavors and scents, everywhere from your coffee to your candles. But what about your feminine products?”

Good question! And here’s your answer — which nicely nails all the frollicking-in-nature cliches intrinsic to this genre of advertising while also making the whole cringeworthy pumpkin spice craze even cringeworthier:

Scrutiny Intensifies on Energy Drink Makers

Energy drinks are coming under scrutiny yet again, with the filing of an $85 million wrongful death lawsuit against Red Bull.

A 33-year-old Brooklyn man collapsed while playing basketball after consuming the beverage. The cause of death was idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy, meaning his heart stopped, according to the New York Daily News. It’s not the first death reportedly linked to energy drink consumption, which has prompted Congress to consider tighter regulations on the industry.

A Red Bull spokeswoman declined to comment on the case. She pointed out, however, that Red Bull is available in more than 165 countries because health authorities have concluded it is safe to consume. About 35 billion cans have been consumed since Red Bull was created more than 25 years ago, she added.
