PepsiCo Profit Down, But Marketing Spend Spikes

PepsiCo’s first quarter earnings report Thursday morning showed that the snack and beverage giant’s profits had fallen 5% from the period a year earlier, but also revealed a big jump in marketing and ad spending.

The company’s global marketing and ad expenses shot up 11% in the first quarter, compared with the first quarter of 2012, according to PepsiCo’s report. That’s counter to a number of big multinationals that are being more conservative with their ad spend these days.

But PepsiCo has been continuing to ramp up investments in marketing for core brands such as Pepsi, Gatorade, Lay’s and Quaker. In 2012 it pledged to spend an additional $500 million to $600 million globally on its core brands, a promise the company has said it kept. The global jump in the first quarter follows a 30% spike in its U.S. measured media spending last year, to a total of $834 million, according to Kantar Media.

Ignite Consolidates Ad Duties at McCann NY

Another McCann-related p0st, you say? What the hell. Well, it looks like Houston-based Ignite Restaurant Group has gone all in with McCann Erickson, handing its full brand advertising duties to the New York office, which picked up AOR duties for its Joe’s Crab Shack chain last November. Apparently, the spot you see above for Joe’s helped spur the move. In a statement, Ignite CMO Robin Ahearn says, “The positive feedback from ‘100% Shore’ and the great working relationship we’ve developed with McCann led to this consolidation. Our goal is to drive frequency with our current guests and introduce our restaurants to new guests across the country.  McCann is helping us do just that.”

As far as Ignite’s new move, McCann NY is now serving as AOR for  Romano’s Macaroni Grill  brand and will handle strategy responsibilities for Brick House Tavern + Tap. From what we’ve been told, there was no review. Instead, McCann NY asked for an opportunity to present ideas for the Romano’s Macaroni Grill business and Ignite gave a thumbs up, awarding Brick House strategy in the process.

AMC Upfront Ditches Stage Show for Live Funhouse of Zombies, Meth and Mad Men

AMC’s upfront presentation Wednesday night looked more like an attraction at a theme park than a pitch to advertisers, turning the 69th Regiment Armory in New York into an interactive tour of shows such as “The Walking Dead,” “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad.”

Each room was dedicated to a different series. In the meth lab of “Breaking Bad,” for example, media buyers and clients got a taste of the finished product (well, a blue rock candy likeness, anyway). An office set approximated the interior of the ad agency Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce on “Mad Men.” “Walking Dead” zombies lurked behind the trees and tents of an elaborate forest. And a carnival tent included a performance from the stars of the reality series “Freakshow.”

“For those of you under 40, this is what an upfront used to be,” Charlie Collier, president of AMC, said in a brief talk. “This isn’t a presentation; we want you to have an experience.”

Personalized Commerce: Coming to an Internet Near You

Retailer strategies leveraging data can have a personal effect on buying habits sooner than you know it.

From the perspective of a modern retailer, data is pushing pricing and promotion strategies in two directions — toward both national and personal pricing. Data insights, retailer infrastructure and consumer tools are developing quickly but unevenly. This gives innovative retailers an opportunity to shape the pricing and promotion practices of the future, all the while technologists are keen to develop new tools to disrupt those plans.

Yet, on the front end, consumers expect an omni-channel retail experience. In a recent survey by Empathica, more than half of smart phone users admit to using their mobile devices to do research product prices. When this research happens real-time in stores, it is commonly referred to as “Showrooming.” And as such, these consumers are currently better informed than the retailers in many aspects.

Alma, La Comunidad Are Big U.S. Hispanic Winners At Wave Festival

In a stellar debut performance at the Wave Festival for Latin America this week, six U.S. Hispanic agencies captured 19 awards in Rio de Janeiro.

In one of the most popular campaigns at the festival, Omnicom-backed Alma’s “Adios Cliches, Hola Mexico” work for a Mexican film festival in Los Angeles captivated two juries. As the U.S. Hispanic market participated in the 6-year-old Wave for the first time, the Alma campaign picked up two gold and one silver awards in the film category, and one gold and two silver awards in the promo category.

Publicis ECD Essig Splits for Gig at TBWA C\D New York

Sources familiar with the matter confirm that Perry Essig, who’s been with Publicis for well over five years and most recently served as EVP/executive creative director out of its New York office, is leaving the agency for a gig a TBWA\Chiat\Day NY. From what we’ve been told by sources, Essig is moving to Chiat NY, effective May 1, to serve as global creative director on Accenture, which awarded TBWA its global AOR duties nearly two years ago. During his five-year stint at Publicis, Essig served as EVP/ECD on the Citi business (you might remember this spot that’s still been making the rounds) among other things.

Prior to Publicis, Essig served as partner/senior copywriter at Ogilvy on AmEx and Kodak among other accounts and has also served as an ACD at Arnold.

AntiCast 77 & 78 – Richard Linklater e a trilogia “Antes do Amanhecer”
