JWT Agency Tries ‘Happiness’ Mobile App to Track Employee Morale

How can an agency communicate better internally? How should management gauge employee satisfaction in the mobile age? Is there an efficient way to leverage the social media influence of the agency’s own staff?

For a WPP Group-owned digital shop in Indonesia, the answer is a newly-launched, in-house mobile “Happiness App.” According to Kevin Mintaraga, CEO of XM Gravity in Jakarta, “both online and offline experience have to work together.”

One reason Mr. Mintaraga started the app was that he no longer has time to hold twice-a-year, hour-long sessions with each employee to see how work is going. He did it when his company had only six people, but now it’s at 135.

Huge Drops One of its VPs of Tech

Though he’s listed as VP, director of technology at Brooklyn-based, IPG-owned Huge, we have received word that Chris Magdelinskas was just one a of a few heads of technology at the agency, which we’ve learned has let him go. According to those in the know, Huge did make the decision to let the exec go as part of of a reorganization of the technology discipline at Huge into engineering and technology strategy teams.

Prior to joining Huge, where he spent a year, the New York-based Magdelinskas worked with the likes of CBS and UGO. We’re hearing that ex-Hugers have started a Facebook page, but feel free to leave a link.

Samsung Boasts Unique Features for New Galaxy Phone in War With Apple

Samsung took center stage at the Radio City Music Hall in New York on Thursday night to introduce the Galaxy S4, demonstrating a slew of unusual features that it hopes will win consumers away from Apple’s iPhone.

Rather than explicitly pitching the phone as an Apple alternative as it did with the Galaxy S III, however, Samsung argued that the new features will help users achieve a “richer, simpler, more full life.” The tagline for the phone was “Life companion.”

After Samsung mobile chief J.K. Shin ran down some of those capabilities, which include automatically pausing video when users look away and taking photos with the front and back cameras simultaneously, a cast of nearly 20 actors and a full orchestra performed four scenes depicting how the phone can be used in everyday life.

Former Tribune Co. Staffer Charged With Helping Anonymous Hack L.A. Times

A former web producer for a Tribune Co. TV station was accused by federal prosecutors of conspiring with the hacker group called Anonymous to break into a Tribune news website.

Matthew Keys, 26, was charged in an indictment yesterday with providing log-in credentials to Anonymous members for a computer server belonging to Tribune, the Justice Department said in a statement. Prosecutors said Mr. Keys, formerly the web producer for KTXL Fox 40 in Sacramento and now deputy social media editor at Thomson Reuters, encouraged Anonymous members to disrupt the website.

One hacker used the credentials to log into the server and make changes to the web version of story in Tribune’s Los Angeles Times, the Justice Department said. Mr. Keys, after allegedly trying to help the hacker when he was initially unsuccessful with the login, learned that he made changes to content on the site and wrote “nice” in an internet chat-room conversation, according to the statement.

The Old Spice Wolfdog Calls it Quits

And thus, W+K Portland and P&G bid farewell to Old Spice’s “Wolfdog,” who in the past week has garnered over 4 million views via videos such as this and this and who’s even produced a Tumblr as well as  a record. But alas, all good things must come to an end, and Wolfdog is now out as Old Spice’s director of marketing and you can see his resignation clip above. Some people, though, have told us that this campaign is fairly similar to the one from Atmosphere Proximity to promote “The Big Ad Gig.” What do you think? Check out one more clip from the week-long campaign if interested as well as credits after the jump.
