Honda Awards ‘Oscars’ to Brand Lovers

honda_love_oscars.png

As the Oscars kicked off last night, Honda hosted their own unique virtual awards ceremony dedicated to their fans on Facebook and Twitter. Fans who illustrated their passion were recognized with specialized #HondaLove awards in real-time coinciding with similar category wins as they were announced.

#HondaLove award examples include Best Song, Best Live Action Short and Best Art Direction. About 10 total awards were given out during the awards show. A #HondaLove winner gallery is posted to Honda’s Facebook page.

While not exactly a newsjacking stunt, the work did tie in nicely with the evening’s Oscar content.

This effort extends a series of feel-good surprises, known as “Honda Loves You Back,” most recently for Valentine’s Day.

Billboard Generates Drinking Water Out of Thin Air in Desert of Peru

Lima, Peru, gets about half an inch of rainfall per year. Yet the atmospheric humidity is around 98 percent. UTEC, the country's major university of engineering and technology, took this peculiar problem and—with help from ad agency Mayo Draftfcb—devised a unique solution: a billboard that draws moisture out of that humid air and turns it into potable drinking water. Check out the case-study video below to see how it works. The billboard wasn't just a nice gesture, either. It served as a recruitment tool to get more students to apply to the university.

On a related note: Burt's Bees is capturing rain water with a billboard of its own—the same interactive board from Baldwin& that delighted Minneapolis last year with its "hydrating" coupons. In the video below, see how the ad is continuing to give back with an interesting second act as a prototype for a rain catchment system.

Sony PlayStation Selects Carat as New Media Agency

Sony PlayStation has shifted its media business from Interpublic Group shops to Aegis’ Carat.

The move follows a creative review and selection this month that saw the business move from IPG’s Deutsch to Publicis Groupe’s BBH New York.

Deutsch had also supported media for the PlayStation brand, which falls under Foster City, Calif.-based Sony Computer Entertainment America. Sony Corp. has a broader relationship with Interpublic’s UM, which has supported the company’s various business units — Sony Electronics, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Sony Music Entertainment and Sony Canada — for more than 10 years.

And the Top 5 Biggest Social-TV Moments During Last Night’s Oscars Were …

Twitter’s head of TV, Fred Graver, reveals in a blog post titled “A look back at the Oscars” (yes, this morning it does seem so very long ago) that there were nearly 9 million tweets about the 85th annual Academy Awards last night, including 2.1 million during the red-carpet pre-show, and 6.8 million during the big show itself.

According to Graver’s numbers, Adele was arguably the night’s big social-media winner. She appears twice in Twitter’s Top 5 list of Oscar moments that prompted the most tweets-per-minute (TPM) — and came within spitting distance of the inevitable most-tweeted moment (the announcement of Best Picture) with her performance of “Skyfall”:

1. “Argo” wins Best Picture: 85,300 TPM

Five Fast Truths About Real-Time Marketing

Real-time marketing is all the rage, but what do you need to know to make it work?

Last year was the year that some marketers finally learned how to market their brands at the speed of culture. This is the year that they will get good at it.

As social media has become legitimized, the promise of being a real-time, responsive marketer is something companies have strived for. And, little by little, brands have begun to prove that they can move faster than their bureaucracies. Hopping on a meme as it’s becoming one, reacting to world events minutes after they occur or commenting on cultural movements have become commonplace. Despite the progress, we still celebrate a brand moving quickly with the giddiness and effusiveness of a 13-year-old at a One Direction concert.

John Jameson Saves His Whiskey Again, This Time From a Runaway Train

Which way to the bar car? John Jameson returns in another fun, rollicking tall tale from TBWA\Chiat\Day, this time rescuing comely lasses and barrels of his namesake Irish whiskey from a speeding 19th-century train. The Iron Horse engine, however, shoots over a cliff and falls into the sea, where it smashes a Prussian ship and sends the would-be invaders sinking to the bottom. Poor Prussians, I bet they got swallowed by a giant octopus. Kidding, of course. I know the octopus is fictional, just like Prussia. (I'm not seeing it on the Google Maps, people! Oh, there it is in Pennsylvania.)
