Leave your burger at the edge of the tub

Jackhottub
Jack in the Box retains its status as the creepy uncle of the fast-food world with its newest Web site, Make a Jack Sandwich. (It originally attained said status the moment it introduced Jack sauce.) They’ve really outdone themselves this time. Whereas most sites like this let you upload an image of your face into a zany picture and e-mail it to your friends, this one lets you upload two images, one on either side of the Jack mascot, as the three of you relax in a hot tub. There’s also a link to the related commercial, which revels in the kind of exaggerated 1970s sleaze I’ve only seen a thousand times before. Maybe next time they’ll do a 1960s spoof with a vanload of hippies. Jack will be playing the sitar.

FCC beats down Fox show five years later

Married
The FCC, which always seems to have its knickers in a twist—but insists on imposing penalties when it sees said knickers on TV—is targeting 13 Fox affiliates with $7,000 fines for episodes of Married By America that contained “persistent sexual activities.” Now, “persistent sexual activities” and “marriage” sound mutually exclusive, and indeed, the naughtiness took place during the show’s bachelor and bachelorette parties. In a departure from its staid balance-sheet musings and world-trade analyses, Reuters paints this picture of the show, which aired nearly five years ago: “The program included scenes like a topless woman straddling a man, whipped cream being licked off one woman’s bare chest and an underwear-clad man being spanked by two female strippers.” After reading that, my main question is: Which genius canceled this show in the first place?! (And no wonder the Enzyte guy felt deflated after the series’ passing.) I’m starting a petition … to get Married By America back on the air asap. If it returns, I’ll be investing in a TiVo system. To record sports, OK? Perverts.

We’re Learning To Be More Giving

Wired’s running a feature called “Free! Why $0.00 Is the Future of Business.”

Nat Ives of Ad Age spoke to Chris “Long Tail” Anderson, Editor of Wired, about the free economy. There’s much to absorb in Anderson’s thinking. Like this:

The third model of free is the gift economy. This is what used to be called freaky, Berkeley, hippy-commune stuff and now is the basis for Wikipedia, the blogosphere, Craigslist. There is a real economy out there that is motivated by nonmonentary consideration such as reputation, attention, expression — all the social incentives that are turning out to be incredibly effective in getting people to do things for free.

Another interesting thing Anderson says is, “Advertising isn’t the victim of the free economy; it’s the engine of the free economy.”
