Scottish film group touts nation’s ugliness

Toilet
As if the country’s official tourism slogan, “Welcome to Scotland,” weren’t underwhelming enough, now the Scottish film industry has developed a questionable campaign of its own, promoting the nation as a great place for filmmaking—because it’s such a grim and cheerless slab of land. “If we keep promoting Scotland as a country with lovely views and landscapes,” says Scottish Screen location manager Belle Doyle, “we are not going to rank too highly, because there are many other countries which are completely stunning.” A plan to celebrate one’s urban/industrial blight is so superficially dumb that it must be secretly genius (hey, it worked in Trainspotting), so it’ll probably make fools of all the naysayers. Knowing that, we’re prepared to jump on their bandwagon and call for Scotland to extend the idea and present its inhabitants generally as inarticulate, kilted louts who drink too much and make eyes with the livestock. Or worse, suggest that these guys are your average Scots.

Marketing Interview And Such

There’s a super cool site I tend to visit a few times a week, just to browse through their archive and laugh myself silly with their hilarious geek jokes. The site’s called XKCD, and they publish a new toon every few days. If you’re not on track with this one, you’re missing out on some great fun!

Online Package Tracking

90s Flow Chart

This is just a tiny selection of their 300+ archive, and all I can say is: you’ve just got to go check it out… so many memories and ‘aha-erlebnis’ moments.

Being Remarkable

Whenever you’re in Orlando, chances are you’ll see a car like this driving around. All I can say is, even though I’ve been in Orlando and went out for dinner quite a few times, there’s only one place I remember where you can eat ‘the best lobsters in town’… I wonder why that is.

Great stunt for the Boston Lobster Feast!

Adidas: telling the story of Adi

Storytelling is an art that is slowly fading away. There are even groups dedicated to the preservation of stories and of storytellers. With with new technologies and advancing digital techniques, the story is often lost. There are still those occasional stories that get told with passion and care, and they are truly beautiful. Adidas, founded 60 years ago, is one of the most iconic brands today with a logo that speaks for itself. Yet 180 Amsterdam has crafted a beautiful animated short about the history of Adi Dassler and the beginnings of Adidas. Simple, beautiful animation, but most important, an incredible and uplifting story from a true storyteller that speaks louder than any logo could. It’s nice to see a real story every now and then.

And you can check out the :60 version on YouTube here.

The Power Of Marketing

It’s a fact that if you are a marketeer, a lot depends on how well you can wrap up your message to sell your product. Presentation is everything. The way you propose your product, supported by testimonials and based on facts that have been broadcasted on international TV stations will definitely determine the success of a product. Word of mouth will also help you out a bit, because nowadays, people very often rely on the statements their peers make before they decide to purchase a product. The perfect illustration of a great marketing stunt is the (most likely photoshopped) product below. Needless to say, this is so much more than the bare product could ever be. This carries a story, and stories sell. Even when this is a fake, it points out exactly what marketing is all about. You can make people want something, and they’ll be happy to pay a little more for it, as long as you succeed in wrapping it up nicely before you deliver.

Not JUST a paperclip

Lesson learned.

1 Unfortunate Logo

A few months ago I did a post about 8 unfortunate company logos. Recently I came across another logo that really could fit in well with the others. I’m not really sure it’s in Spanish, because I can’t really translate it, but the pic has been sent to me by a friend who found it on the web. Since it’s travelling around, I thought I’d post it here. Thing is, when it comes to picking the right company name, please make sure the abbreviation is not ambiguous in other languages. Chances are if a company like this depends on tourists to survive, I don’t think it will be quite as popular 🙂

Hey, Mr. Postman, Have You Got a Letter for HBO?

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) – -Remember when people actually sent handwritten letters? HBO does, and it's teamed with the Postal Service to persuade the nation to pen more "Dear John" letters — or, if you like, "Dear Abigail." To promote its miniseries "John Adams," which premieres March 16, HBO has launched a wide-ranging retail and online campaign called "Power of the Letter." It's inspired by the former president's famous appreciation for writing to his wife, Abigail, with whom he exchanged more than 1,100 letters.

What Do Perfectmatch.com, Grandparents.com Have in Common? Both Want Boomers

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) — Think about online dating, and what likely comes to mind are 20-somethings trolling web pages in the hopes of finding a love connection. But increasingly, those trollers are more like 50-somethings, single baby boomers looking for dates.

CareerBuilder Gruntledness Index Highlights Hotpots of Happy

To cash in on the passive-aggressive misery that comprises white collar cog life, CareerBuilder gives us the National Gruntledness Index, which highlights the happiest places to work. Results can be divvied by industry. But if the NGI is any indicator of reality, Oklahoma City is the best place in the nation no matter what you’re doing.

Craigslist’s Craig Newmark is a Dove fan

Doveonslaughtgirl
Ogilvy & Mather’s work for Dove has found another fan: Craigslist founder Craig Newmark. Speaking at a Columbia University panel, Newmark said the “Campaign for Real Beauty” campaign works because it tells a simple truth about the beauty industry. He even has a suggestion for an ad: buy a placement in Vogue that would simply read, “This magazine is a lie.” Mike Hemingway, the global managing director at Ogilvy who was on the same panel, wasn’t quite ready to take him up on his idea. Questioned about the possible hypocrisy of one Unilever brand acting high and mighty while another, Axe, gets down and dirty, Hemingway admitted it’s a “fair question.” At the same time, he pointed to the scoreboard: Dove’s uplifting videos got about 14 million views, while the backlash got 14,000. But actually, the figures are a little different—the backlash video has 103,000 views.

Reebok was ready for a Patriots win, too

Earlier this week, we posted this Reebok commercial, in which Eli Manning sends the 1972 Miami Dolphins a gift after keeping the New England Patriots from completing a perfect season. David Esrati Will Not Stay Quiet

Running for office in Ohio’s 3rd Congressional Distict, ad agency owner David Esrati is trying to get the word out about his campaign.

He’s running against the Republican incumbent Mike Turner, who used to be the mayor of Dayton. And that’s what makes the spot below so interesting:

When Mike Turner was Mayor, he had me arrested for a silent symbolic protest. We went to court, not once, or twice, but five times. We offered to not file a lawsuit against the City if they dropped charges, but they insisted that I would have to plead guilty to one.

They lost five times. Remember, Mike is the one who went to law school, not me.

This is a great spot for YouTube, ’cause if you’re at work you don’t need the volume up to get the message.
