Shop at Wal-Mart, or the Earth bites it

I’ve heard people complaining about these new “green” ads for Wal-Mart, but you really have to see them yourself for the full effect. Sure, Wal-Mart’s been talking about cutting down on its planet-raping for a few years now, but is this how you sell it? With each preachy TV spot, the call to action is, “If every Wal-Mart shopper, all 200 million of us, bought one of these, then the Earth would cease its inexorable descent into a strip-mined wasteland.” So, instead of showing that it’s following through on serious, long-term corporate commitments to eco-friendly practices, the company is just tossing the job back in the consumer’s lap. The ads get extra demerits for smug delivery, forced natural backdrops and a blatant rip-off of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s beautiful “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Check out the other two spots after the jump. Boston Marathon hits wall on no-ads policy

Bostonmarathon
Breaking with a 112-year tradition, the Boston Marathon will put corporate ads on the start and finish lines of Monday’s race promoting its two main sponsors: John Hancock Financial Services and Adidas. “It’s not like they are up in the air, blocking anyone’s view or anything like that,” says Dorothy Ferriter, who heads the marathon committee in Hopkinton, Mass., where the race begins, 26.2 miles from the Back Bay finish line. I wish they’d change the course, because the runners go right past my front door, and all the spectators barbecue and toss their trash in the courtyard. Maybe the South End could host the race. Boston University could build the proposed bio-terror lab in my neighborhood instead—it’d actually be less disruptive. Rosie Ruiz once “won” the Boston Marathon by taking the subway. I’m with her: I’ll risk a quick grope over shin splits and dehydration any day.

Super Car Mobiles – The Ferrari Cell Phone (GALLERY)

(TrendHunter.com) I don’t know how I feel about this Ferrari cell phone. On the one hand, I love miniatures, on the other hand the phone looks kitschy as hell. But that’s just my opinion. The little Ferrari has 2.2 inch touch-sensitive LCD display, USB connectivity, MP3 and picture and video camera. This little toy w…

If you have to nerd out, do it with friends

Dd Given how much online gaming has cut into tabletop, pen-and-paper role-playing’s profit margins, it’s only natural that Dungeons and Dragons would fight back with an ad like this. (The ad is from a couple years ago—see the full image here.) It’s a funny blow struck in a generally annoying nerd argument, the likes of which hasn’t been seen since the Dream Theater vs. Dragonforce debate. And it makes a good point. If you want to kill Orcs with your friends, why not do it together? Just don’t run out of snacks.

Muffin bottoms rise up in Bloom campaign

Bloombottoms On the heels of last week’s Erik Estrada commercial for Bloom, BooneOakley stages a mock rebellion for the supermarket chain featuring jealous muffin bottoms who are incensed over Bloom’s sale of scrumptious muffin tops. There’s a Web site, a MySpace page and more online antics—but why confine the hilarity to the Internet? The promotion includes events in several South Carolina locations (including Clemson U.) at which “the four members of C.R.U.M.B., the Coalition of Really United Muffin Bottoms, crash an ostensible Bloom promotion for its new line of blueberry muffin tops.” They’re known as “Bloomberry Muffins,” by the way. A few years back, Bloom dropped a giant jumbo muffin from one of its billboards, crushing a car below. All good reasons to avoid South Carolina. (Kidding. Great state. Tasty muffins.) In the videos, it’s not clear which muffin Erik Estrada plays.
