Posted in: Uncategorized
BATAVIA, Ohio (AdAge.com) — L'Oreal appears to have hiked ad spending last quarter while rivals Procter & Gamble Co. and Unilever cut back. But it doesn't look to have helped L'Oreal much, as the company pulled down full-year sales guidance today based on a weak third quarter and a 5.7% decline in organic sales growth in North America.

Posted in: UncategorizedAgencySpy to Infiltrate JWT Bar Tonight
Posted in: UncategorizedOK spies, we’re going in. That’s right — we’ve gained access to JWT New York, and tonight we’re going to sneak around, have a drink, make awkward conversation, and hopefully get some ridiculous dirt while schmoozing it up at “The Bar” aka “Blue Lighting”. OK, well maybe not serious dirt, but we’re stoked to meet the crew who make that thing hum, and see them in their Sunday best. And participate in some revelry. Now where’s my camera?
Did we mention there’s a “best costume” contest. The above photo is of Armando Flores; we hear Armando hopes his “Rosanne in Rodbells” getup will win him the cash prize. We’re sure he’s got some tough competition, but he’s got a good start. The reference is classic and the resemblance is uncanny.
We’ll be the guy in the green shirt, who looks like he needs a beer. See you there.

Posted in: UncategorizedWhat’s Sprint Building in Times Square?
Posted in: UncategorizedAbove is another billboard we saw in Times Square today. Sprint has had this board up for a few weeks, but the white scaffold you see here wasn’t there. Um, we already know what the phone itself looks like, so either someone ran out of money or something is going to be built on top of it. Anyone familiar with this campaign who can help us out, e-mail matt@mediabistro dot com.
Note: We have no idea whose head is in the lower left corner of the pic.

Posted in: UncategorizedSometimes I pause to ask myself just how many “Americas” we have in this country. There’s the America that Reagan idealized in his shining city upon a hill. As Joe Bageant reminds us in his book, Deer Hunting with Jesus, there’s also the a large backwoods America, where all kinds of strange ideas take root.
Today’s Washington Post takes us to one of the Bageantian hamlets that are hard for some urban, coastal sophisticates to imagine. But lack of imagination doesn’t make these places any less real.
Welcome to West Plains, MO:
Since it was erected by a local conservative about a month ago, the billboard has been criticized by political Web sites, media outlets and travelers passing through West Plains as racist, factually inaccurate and small-minded. More telling, though, has been the reaction — or lack of it — in the town itself.
“To a lot of us, the sign is just a step in the right direction,” said Kevin Collins, 38, who wrote to the local newspaper in support of the sign. “I’m like a pit bull, and believe some things are worth fighting for. We can’t just sit back and let him become president.”
The part that’s insane is the fact that Obama, more so than McCain, has small town America’s interests at heart. But “policy” doesn’t travel well to these isolated towns. “Policy” is something that educated people discuss over pear mojitos. Intolerance, however, well that arrives fresh each morning care of conservative talk radio.

Posted in: UncategorizedWhere is Moxiesozo Founder Leif Steiner Taking his Design Team?
Posted in: UncategorizedMoxiesozo is a 15-person Boulder, Colo. shop that until today we didn’t know existed. We got an e-mail that founder and creative dude Leif Steiner is taking his design crew to an unknown location — as in no one but he knows their destination. All anyone knows is that they need a passport and some preventative shots.
Steiner is “taking them on a 2 week trip. Where will they be going? No one knows. Armed with a packing list, Yellow Fever vaccinations, Malaria pills, and a few other items from sponsors like Sierra Designs, the designers will be boarding a plane to a third world country.”
To give you some background, Steiner has, “hitchhiked the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan. He’s traveled with the Bedouin across the Sahara.” Dude knows what’s up, and he’s probably going to show those kiddies a good time (just not the kind that we focus on, which involves beaches and cocktails). Check out the e-mail he sent staffers to get them prepared for the adventure, after the jump.
We like Steiner’s idea — take some designers drop ’em in some crazy territory with only you to count on — and lead them back to safety. That’s what we’re talking about — really building the team, like soldiers or sherpa or a bunch of noob travelers who thrive on adrenaline. Seriously though, doesn’t this sound like something Michael from “The Office” would do? We’ll see the first pics on Nov. 3, and you can be the judge.
