2007 Adland Roundup – A look back at the year in advertising

Hello boys and girls of Adland! Yes, it’s that time of year again when we do the Adland roundup and list the year’s best and worst ads.
My, my, I can’t believe time flies when you’re having fun – can you believe we’ve been doing this since 2003. Nostalgics may start their tour of previous years Round Ups here: 2003 part 1 and 2003 part 2. Adland roundup 2004, the ads, and adland roundup 2006 part 1.

Now let’s get into the fun!

2007 seemed to be a year of medicore or average ads overall. There were some quite good ads, of course, with the usual sprinkling in of shocking and ready for bannage. We saw some bizarre furries themed work from FFL for Orangina. Last years big bringing back the dead trend continued as CP+B brought back a super creepy Orville Redenbacher. Uncle Ben was brought out of retirement, in April there was news about bringing back Bartles & Jaymes characters, and in the UK they trotted out Comedian Bob Monkhouse, but at least it was for a good cause. And we said goodbye to Alan Maxwell Pottasch and Jack Zander .

Adland best of 2007 – the TV show titles.

Honestly, there were some great shows this year, which means great titles and after a long hard think these are the two titles that Adland (and I) loved the mostest of them all.

Dexter main title design

A mundane morning turns sinister in the hands of Digital Kitchen with their design for Dexter which won a well deserved Emmy. Shaving, cooking eggs, making plunger coffee and even tying shoes all hints as bloody mayhem and mass murdering violence – just like the calm character Dexter himself who is so clean on top but violent right beneath the surface. We have to let this win only because cutting oranges now scares the bejesus out of us. Damn that’s good.

Mad Men – Title Sequence – (2007) :30 (USA)

Imaginary Forces directors Mark Gardner and Steve Fuller created a free-fall animation where the falling character is suddenly found reclining in a overly confident pose in the end shot – all surrounded by pretty ads and shiny skyscrapers. The end shot was such an iconic image that it became the branding device of the show. Well done.

Malkovich campaign for Sony VAIO notebooks

Cut + Run’s newly promoted editor, Ben Campbell, recently finished editing 36 short films for Sony Vaio notebooks, which are part of a unique project that captures the creative influences of a unique character: John Malkovich, the Academy Award – nominated actor, producer and director.

This collaboration captures the unique world of John Malkovich and the stimulation and creative thinking he experiences while traveling around Paris. The films feature influences from a variety of sources including John’s choice of music, architecture, authors, films and books. The films were shot during John’s time in Paris directing his play “Good Canary”.

The campaign was created by agency Fallon and directed by BLINKK – an award winning photographic / film-making collective of Annelise Howard Phillips, Leila Naaman and Damien Laurent with production by OneSix7 Productions.

Ben says: “This is the most creative project I have worked on to date, editorially. Blinkk had shot the most beautiful footage in Paris. They also coaxed out some dialogue gems from John, from which Andy Lockley at Fallon chose his favorites.

“We used these snippets of dialogue as the basis for the edit and experimented by placing our preferred visuals over the top. Using picture to change the rhetoric of John’s dialogue was really exciting. A bit like laying up different genres of music to change the feel of a final picture edit. But without any script approval from the client or John we were kind of in the dark as to how the films would be perceived. Sony, John, Andy and Blinkk are all overjoyed with the results, as am I!”
