SpecialGuest Enlists Alex Sonnold to Climb ‘Heaven’ for Squarespace

Agency SpecialGuest enlisted professional climber Alex Honnold to take on a route in Yosemite known as “Heaven,” in free solo fashion, meaning no rope or protective gear for an ad promoting Squarespace 7.

While Honnold is one of the world’s preeminent solo climbers, “Heaven” is no walk in the park, even for him. Before the ad was shot he’d only taken it on once without gear, and describes it as “the most severe route you’ll ever climb.” Since it also affords the best views in Yosemite, Honnold was happy to take on the challenge. A 30-second version of the spot debuted during the World Series last night, but we’ve included the full length version above.

The spot is part of a larger campaign promoting the launch of Squarespace 7 and Alex also helped inspire “Shift,” one of twelve new design templates in the latest version of Squarespace. As you may remember, he’s also not a stranger to advertising, having scaled the GS&P building this June for Stride Health. (more…)

JWT NY Makes Handful of Creative, Account Hires

JWTnewIt’s been some time since we’ve covered staffing news at JWT New York, but the agency has now sent word out that it’s welcomed some senior staffers, both in creative and account management. On the creative front, toplining the new hire list is Robert Frost (he must have fun with that), a 13-year ad vet who’s made the rounds in senior creative roles at the likes of Y&R and TBWA Chiat\Day but spent the majority of his career at McCann.

During his last stint at said agency, which lasted six years, Frost served as SVP/GCD on MasterCard among other accounts. Now at JWT, he will served as executive creative director on the Vonage account, which the agency won at the beginning of the year. Along with Frost, JWT NY has also brought on RAPP alum Bryan Gaffin to serve as GCD on its healthcare accounts including Johnson & Johnson and Bristol-Myers Squibb as well as Kimberly Samskin-Barger, former creative lead on AmEx OPEN at Digitas, as a CD.

On the account side, meanwhile, Sherri Chambers, who most recently served as group brand director on Carl’s Jr. and Hardees at 72andSunny, joins JWT NY as global business director a yet-to-be-named “new account.” Hmm.

Art Director Finds Poetic Beauty in Rap Tumblr

And the ad industry Tumblrs continue to delight. One anonymous art director has combined some of the worst rap lyrics of all time with artistic photographs to create Rap Poems. Quoting Cam’ron, Chingy, and DMX can be fodder for great unintentional comedy, especially when their lyrics are presented as if belonging to a Robert Frost poem. As a student of the rap game, I was easily seduced into scrolling through page after page (the DMX graphic below is my favorite.) Enough talking, though, check out the site yourself. I’ll leave you with a final haiku:

Rappers tumble down

Lyrics and photographs shine

The Internet wins
