Audi's Santa has midlife crisis, sheds pounds to fit in a sports car

Santa Claus’ personal brand, as a modern marketer might say, involves having a round belly and a messy grey beard. It is who he isand has been this way since Coca-Cola helped popularize the modern version of Santa in the early 20th century.

But the Father Christmas takes on a modern look in a new Audi ad that shows him shedding pounds when he endures a bit of a mid-life crisis after realizing that he can’t fit into a sports car at his current weight. The online-only video, by M/H VCCP (formerly Muhtayzik Hoffer) and directed by Craig Gillespie, plugs the new Audi RS 5 Sportback coupe.

Santa catches a glimpse of the car while munching on cookies inside a living room on Christmas Eve. Back at the North Pole after his big day, he begins a workout regime that is painful at first. Pretty soon, he is boxing with elves, jumping rope, doing sit-ups and even passing up cookies in favor of broccoli. He even trims his beard (gasp). His reward, besides lower blood pressure, is a shiny red RS5, hauled in by reindeer, of course, which he takes on a joy ride through the snowy North Pole terrain. Audi’s kicker: “Progress is writing your own story.”

Snapchat creators say the platform is losing its appeal

Some of Snapchat’s most popular users say the company has fallen short of its promise to welcome its creator community as partners, with one of its most popular users threatening to quit the app entirely.

Shaun McBride, also known by his Snapchat handle Shonduras, was one of the platform’s first stars and has been as much a part of Snapchat’s evolution as any user could be. “I am a Snapchat guy,” McBride says during a recent phone interview.

That makes what he said next all the more surprising.

How my new health side hustle changed my world

I’ve been on a personal journey for about five years, and it has taken me from euphoric heights to the depths of depression and back again (several times). It’s a journey many people know well. Every morning I’d look in the mirror and decide that today was the day I was going to lose weight. Armed with the knowledge that diets are bulls#$t, I was going to change everything about my lifestyle: no more bread, no more pasta, no more alcohol, no more desserts, no more refined sugar today was the day I was going to make it happen. The steely resolve empowered by my silent, personal pep talk usually lasted until lunchtime (although occasionally I’d be “good” until dinner). It will come as no surprise that I have struggled with my weight for the better part of my adult life.

The Quantified Self Movement

As I wrote in a recent article about Apple Health:

Scripps to relaunch Court TV, a decade after Its reality shift

E.W. Scripps Co. plans to relaunch Court TV network, returning a well-known brand to viewers more than a decade after the original version morphed into a reality TV channel.

Scripps said its Katz Networks unit bought the Court TV intellectual property and library from AT&T Inc.’s Turner Broadcasting for an undisclosed amount, and plans to reboot it in May. Turner transformed the earlier iteration of Court TV into TruTV in 2008.

While the old Court TV was a cable channel, the new version will also be broadcast over the air and has local-station distribution deals with Scripps as well as with Tribune Media Co. and Univision Communications Inc., Scripps said in a statement Monday. Court TV will reach more than 50 percent of U.S. homes at launch and will be carried in 25 percent of cable homes, Scripps said.
