Brands struggle to compete with Amazon on its own turf

It’s perhaps no surprise that Amazon is its own best customer when it comes to advertising on its site, often promoting its own products in top positions. But this has led to frustration among rival brands who have found themselves trying to compete against Amazon for marketing space on its own properties, according to advertisers.

Advertisers say that in some cases Amazon has a home-field advantage with rules that favor its products on special shopping days, especially on marquee days like Prime Day, the summer deals bonanza that the company invented, or more traditional commercial events like Cyber Monday.

“Prime Day and the holidays are good ways for Amazon to sell Amazon things,” says one digital ad executive, speaking on condition of anonymity. “They’re not necessarily great times to sell non-Amazon products. Amazon is not in it for your brand, they’re in it for themselves.”

Chiefs star quarterback Pat Mahomes plans 'Patty Flakes' cereal

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Pat Mahomes regularly evades 300-pound linemen with ease, but now he’s facing a more formidable opponent: Tony the Tiger.

Mahomes, 23, is preparing to launch a signature breakfast cereal, “Patty Flakes,” the second-year player’s agent, Leigh Steinberg, said on the Bloomberg Business of Sports podcast.

It’s not clear who will produce or market the cereal, but that industry may put Mahomes’s charisma to the test. Kellogg Co. and General Mills Inc. have struggled to lift sluggish sales in recent years, hurt by consumers shifting to other breakfast options. The now-retired quarterback Doug Flutie had some success with “Flutie Flakes,” though that was two decades ago.

Facebook Watch is growing but still dwarfed by YouTube

Facebook Watch receives 75 million viewers a day, according to new statistics shared by the company. But despite its growth, the platform is still a fraction the size of its most important rival, YouTube, and some media companies are concerned by the platform’s ever-changing character.

On Thursday, Facebook gave its most detailed look at the size of Watch, the video offering it launched in 2017 to get people to watch longer form programming. Facebook said its 75 million daily viewers spend 20 minutes on average every day on Watch videos, and there are 400 million people who visit Watch each month for at least a minute. That makes Watch a sprout compared to YouTube, which has 1.9 billion monthly viewers and claims 60 billion minutes a day of view time across the service.

Jim Nail, a researcher with Forrester, wasn’t impressed by Facebook’s numbers, saying “20 minutes is a minimal amount of time.” The time spent suggest that Watch has not quite turned into a destination for committed viewing, and is likely similar to other Facebook video viewing habits.

Before Applying Envy as a Tactic, Marketers Might Want to Consider Their Consumers’ Self-Esteem

It’s a strategy that’s as old as advertising itself: Make consumers crave something that others have. In some ads, people watch enviously as a luxury car speeds past, its driver exuding power and success; in others, a couple looks covetingly over their fence toward their neighbor’s greener lawn, their nicer house, their happier kids. Envy…
