Even 'Roseanne' can't salvage live TV ratings. Here's what each network needs most


Rapidly shifting consumer habits and growing impatience with commercials combined this season to knock a good chuck of TV’s primetime schedule clear off its foundations. Whole genres and programming blocks once assumed to be quake-proof have been deeply shaken. As the big broadcast networks prepare to pitch for ad budgets in their upfronts presentations, there’s no better time to survey the fault lines.

CBS needs a new Monday

No network is unscathed. For the first time since before “Survivor” helped transform it from an also-ran to America’s most-watched network, CBS finds itself having to rebuild an entire night of its schedule.

A few highlights: Bai’s Chief Flavor Officer Justin Timberlake continues to be rather fond of a certain flavor combination (Creativity’s Alexandra Jardine has the backstory: “Justin Timberlake’s obsession with ‘braspberries’ carries on in a Bai ad”). Patron wants you to “make your Cinco de Mayo simply perfect” with a little help from Silver Patron tequila. Univision addresses 'elephant in the room' ahead of TV Upfronts


Amid a major upheaval, Univision got out ahead of the TV upfronts to say that it’s continuing to grow and reinvent itself for the shifts happening in TV.

“I want to address the elephant in the room,” said Tonia O’Connor, chief revenue officer, Univision, at a press event Friday morning, ticking off the business review, cost cutting initiatives and layoffs that have hit Univision over the past few months.

Earlier this year, the Hispanic media company squelched plans for its long-anticipated initial public offering. Then CEO Randy Falco announced in March that he would retire at the end of the year, a year earlier than originally planned. The company also lost its chief financial officer, Francisco Lopez-Balboa, and Gizmodo Media Group CEO Raju Narisetti.

Microsoft retains Dentsu Aegis Network for global media


Dentsu Aegis Network has kept its grip on Microsoft’s mammoth media agency business.

Ad Age first reported the news of the review in December, when the tech giant said it was conducting a closed review of its media account as part of its “normal course of business.” Adweek reported the winner earlier Friday.

The tech giant awarded the work to Dentsu, with the win led by media agency Carat. Dentsu and Carat deferred comment to the client. Microsoft didn’t immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.
