Never mind Cambridge Analytica. Peter Thiel's data-mining company Palantir is watching your every move

Just as the Cambridge Analytica drama is fading (somewhat) from memory, Bloomberg Businessweek is out with a sobering cover story about Peter Thiel’s mysterious data-mining company. “Do you know Palantir?” type on the April 20 cover asks. “Because Palantir knows you.” The cover image is obviously meant to evoke a “Big Brother”-esque aura.

Reported by Peter Waldman, Lizette Chapman and Jordan Robertson, Bloomberg Businessweek’s feature opens with previously undisclosed details about an internal program at JPMorgan Chase that was meant to “protect against perfidious traders and other miscreants” but turned into a “spying scandal” that “vacuumed up emails and browser histories, GPS locations from company-issued smartphones, printer and download activity, and transcripts of digitally recorded phone conversations.”

The effort, which Bloomberg Businessweek says went astray when a JPMorgan Chase security executive “went rogue,” was “aided by as many as 120 ‘forward-deployed engineers’ from the data-mining company Palantir Technologies Inc.”

Spotify bolsters free music model as audio ad wars heat up

Spotify introduced a new mobile version of its free music service Tuesday and tweaked a major competitor along the way.

The expanded offering is being rolled out ahead of YouTube’s new subscription music product. Google-owned YouTube is aiming to persuade some of its 1.5 billion monthly users to upgrade to a paid version. Spotify already operates the largest paid music service in the world, and is expanding what it offers for free to reach a target of 1 billion users.

Users of Spotify’s free mobile app will be able to access many features of the company’s paid service, including some playlists on demand, executives said Tuesday at an event in New York. The changes may also help the company keep its lead over Apple Music, the second-largest paid subscription service.

Diet Coke sizzles despite Super Bowl ad fizzle

The spot delivered lackluster results in public opinion polls and failed to impress professional ad reviewers. The ad ranked dead last in USA Today’s Ad Meter. Ace Metrix, which uses panels of viewers to rank ads, also gave it a low marks. “It is a little static and boring. They are trying to promote a new product which is exciting for them and their presentation is very boring,” said one female panel member, according to Ace Metrix.

But the larger campaign and overhaul is clearly working, at least judging by the first quarter results. The effort, which debuted on Jan. 10, includes a logo redesign, four new flavored varieties, such as “twisted mango” and “ginger lime,” and new slim can packaging. The marketing campaign, which includes the tagline “because I can,” seeks to inject the soda with a youthful, blunt-talking vibe. It is a departure from the glossy, feminine approach Diet Coke had used for years.

On the earnings call Quincey cited the new marketing, packaging and can size. “I think the combination of those three things was bold enough and interesting enough to not just engage some of the people who perhaps had lapsed from Diet Coke, but also millennials, and even some of the people who had perhaps been drinking flavored sparkling water,” he said. Still, he sounded a little cautious, noting that “I’m not a big fan of drawing a trend line through one quarter.”

The probe — which could result in charges against Bollore — is looking at contracts awarded to his company for the operation of container terminals in Lome, Togo, and Conakry, Guinea, according to a person familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named as the probe is ongoing.

Investigating judges suspect that managers of Bollore Groupe used advertising company Havas to facilitate the election of African officials by providing communications advice nearly a decade ago at a discount price, the person said.
