What Apple's Updates Mean for Your App


As of September 7, users and app publishers alike will see a gradual change in the iTunes app store. Less spammy or broken apps, shorter app names and a better search experience. Or so Apple hopes.

The majority of the planned changes were announced in an email from Apple to its developer community on September 1, to give app publishers time to prepare their apps before Apple’s anticipated event on September 7.

As Trump Tosses Darts at CNN, Jeff Zucker Enjoys Election Year


It’s a Friday morning two months-minus one day until the presidential election. Earlier in the week CNN debuted a two-hour documentary special that delved into the early life, family history and business dealings of Republican nominee Donald Trump. (A similar film also aired about Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.) The documentary, “All Business: The Essential Donald Trump,” didn’t sit well with its subject. That morning Mr. Trump took to Twitter to blast the documentary, CNN and the network’s leader, Jeff Zucker.

“The documentary of me that @CNN just aired is a total waste of time,” he tweeted. “I don’t even know many of the people who spoke about me. A joke!”

He followed up with: “@CNN is unwatchable. Their news on me is fiction. They are a disgrace to the broadcasting industry and an arm of the Clinton campaign.”

All the Ads in This London Subway Station Have Been Replaced by Pictures of Cats

It isn’t often in advertising that we get a happy ending that isn’t totally fictional and “brought to you by. But here one is, in all its furry glory!

In early May, we wrote about Glimpse Collective’s Kickstarter quest to replace all the ads in a London Underground station with images of cats. By the end of that month, U.K. animal rescue center Battersea joined forces with them, offering its cats up as models, in hopes that nice Londoners would experience love at first sight. 

Despite that endorsement, things weren’t looking good. In the last few days of their campaign, Glimpse—which created the Citizens Advertising Takeover Service, or #CatsNotAds—had raised $17,487, just over half of its objective (£23,000, or nearly $30,500). The company appealed to agency heads to provide rescue funds, and we closed our minds and hearts, awaiting the inevitable snuffing-out of a beautiful dream. 

But this week we discovered God exists, and loves us. On Monday morning, commuters passing through London’s Clapham Common Tube station were accosted by feline friends.

Time Inc. Names Rich Battista to Succeed Joe Ripp as CEO


Time Inc., the publisher of brands from People to Fortune, has named Rich Battista CEO, succeeding the chief executive of three years, Joe Ripp.

The unexpected move represents a quick rise for Mr. Battista, who joined Time Inc. in April 2015 as exec VP at Time Inc. and president of People and Entertainment Weekly, was promoted to president-entertainment and sports group and video in January and became president-brands in July, with all U.S. publications reporting into him.

Mr. Ripp will continue as executive chairman of Time Inc.’s board of directors.

With pre-roll such a widely reviled format, discouraging users from sticking around to watch online videos, and post-roll uncomfortably reminiscent of asking for a favor, media companies are finding that the answer is literally somewhere in between.

It’s not that nobody thought of it before; mid-roll is of course how TV has shown ads for decades. It’s that there are more opportunities to sell video ads that way than there were before.
