Google Built an Escape Room, and Is Making People Use a Bunch of Its Apps to Get Out

Google France has built an escape room to seamlessly unite online and offline worlds.

Created by We Are Social, Première Pièce will open at an undisclosed location in the heart of Paris. The campaign builds on the escape room trend, in which you and a bunch of friends pay to get locked in a room for an hour or two, left to solve puzzles and work in collaboration to find a way out. Last month, the Toronto Film Festival built an escape room that lives on Instagram. (Google’s is a physical room, but uses virtual tools as a central conceit.)

Community Films signs Director Marius Crowne

Community Films has signed Director Marius Crowne to the company’s diverse roster of talent. Crowne joins Community in the midst of being selected for the prestigious “New Director Showcase” by “Shoot Magazine.” The Director will be featured in a panel discussion at the DGA in New York this Thursday, May 26th.

Want to see his reel? Check Director Marius Crowne’s reel at Community Films. Raised in the Appalachian steel town of Ashland, KY, Marius earned a bachelor’s degree in Russian Literature at The University of Kentucky before moving on to studying film at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD).

“Community seems to be one of the only production companies out there that has a stable of Directors that are all doing something different,” says Crowne. “Each one of us has a clear, distinct vision, and I love the idea that when I get put up for a job, it’s because I’m the best person for the job — that my style was right for the client — rather than just being a face in a crowd of very similar looking faces.”

Crowne joins a roster of directorial talent at Community Films, which includes Directors Seth Gordon, Jared Hess, Michael Patrick Jann, Matt Smukler, Pam Thomas, Clay Tweel, Clay Williams, and Emil Möller.

“We are so excited to have found Marius and to have him join our team of Directors here at Community,” explains Executive Producer/Partner Lizzie Schwartz. “He is an extremely talented and creative storyteller, with a wide breadth of experience even though he is really a newcomer.”

“After submitting his reel to ‘Shoot Magazine’ for the New Director Showcase, we were thrilled to hear from the Editors that they agreed Marius’ talent is unique and innovative, and worthy of being part of the showcase this year,” adds Community Executive Producer Carl Swan.

Deutsch Hires Rachel Mercer as VP/Digital Strategy Director in New York

Deutsch appointed Rachel Mercer as vice president, digital strategy director, effective May 31. This marks the latest addition to a “re-invigorated” team at the agency’s New York office.

In the new role, Mercer will be tasked with growing the agency’s digital, social and innovation strategy practice and will report directly to New York chief strategy officer Andrew Dawson, who was hired back in March. She replaces Scott Lindenbaum, who is transferring to the Los Angeles office as senior vice president, director of digital strategy, products and platforms, effective June 6.

Mercer arrives at Deutsch from London innovation studio The Upside, where she has served as strategy and innovation director since last October, working with clients including Google and adidas. Prior to The Upside, she spent nearly a year and a half at fellow London innovation studio Made by Many, where she worked with clients such as V&A, Expedia, Hackaball and World Economic Forum. Before that she served an earlier stint at Deutsch, working as  an invention strategist and then senior strategist, digital and invention, out of the agency’s Los Angeles office for about two years. During that time she worked with brands including Target, Nintendo, Taco Bell, Volkswagen and Esurance.

Mercer’s arrival is the latest in a string of new hires for Deutsch and follows on the heels of the New York office hiring Maggie O. Connors arriving as executive vice president/head of business development last week. Other recent hires include those of partner/chief technology officer Trevor O’Brien and CSO Dawson along with ECD Pete Johnson (formerly with Arnold) and partner/chief creative officer Dan Kelleher (formerly with KBS) on the creative side.

“Rachel’s talent was so immediate, my first thought was, I wish she started yesterday,” said Dawson in a statement, citing her “diverse strategic experience” and her status as a “genuinely multifaceted thinker, collaborator and leader.”

How HP Turned Unwritten Stories of Illiterate Brazilians Into Books Printed in Real Time

Imagine if there were an easy way for people who can’t read and write to share their life experiences with the world. HP and agency AlmapBBDO took a crack at coming up with one, focusing on some of the 13 million illiterate individuals in Brazil, as part of a touching new campaign called “Magic Words.”

First, AlmapBBDO sourced 30 such people from around the country, including rural areas and big cities like São Paolo and Rio de Janeiro. Then, it used Google Speech’s voice-recognition software to transcribe their stories, and publish them in a paperback book, created using an HP printer. A documentary followed the effort, and retold it in documentary format.

As TV Business Heaves, Executives Promote Stability at Upfronts

For all the talk about TV innovating and acting more like digital video, the message during this week’s upfront pitches was one of stability. From leaning on familiar franchises and showrunners, to keeping large portions of schedules intact, TV execs were hoping to provide some assurance to advertisers amid a year that has been rife with upheaval for the industry.

And as the networks talked up their remakes and steady schedules, they took jabs at digital video outfits claiming online content has the same reach and engagement as TV.

“I don’t care what those Silicon Valley guys say, there is no algorithm for heart-pumping, breath-holding premium content,” said Linda Yaccarino, chairman-advertising sales and client partnerships, NBC Universal.
