Dez Bryant Is Out of the Playoffs but Still Winning for Beats

Every weekday, we bring you the Ad Age/iSpot Hot Spots, new and trending TV commercials tracked by iSpot.tv, a company that catalogs, tags and measures activity around TV ads in real time. The New Releases here ran on TV for the first time yesterday. The Most Engaging ads are showing sustained social heat, ranked by SpotShare scores reflecting the percent of digital activity associated with each one over the past week. See the methodology here.

Among the new releases, Ford pitches the F-150, the truck for “every lifestyle.” (The spot also leans on scarcity. “You guessed it,” Dennis Leary intones, “they’re running out fast.”) And another sales season picks up, with offers blasted out from Nissan, Men’s Wearhouse and Big Lots.

Ad-Tech Company Shuts Down 'Zombie' Cookie

Verizon’s foray into the digital ad business isn’t going all that smoothly.

Turn, a partner in the carrier’s mobile-tracking offering for advertisers, was cited in a series of critical media reports for using Verizon’s technology tracking on consumers even after they’d cleared their cookies. After defending the practice, Turn abruptly reversed its position and suspended the practice which had been nicknamed the “zombie” cookie.

“Over the past 48 hours, there has been significant interest in a method Turn uses to deliver tailored advertising to mobile browsers,” wrote Turn chief privacy officer Max Ochoa in a blog post. “We have heard the concerns and are actively re-evaluating this method.”

Biggest Ad Spender P&G Has New North America Media Chief

The biggest U.S. advertiser has a new media chief as Procter & Gamble Co. has named Kristine Decker to oversee its estimated $3 billion-plus U.S. media outlay.

Ms. Decker, brand director-North America Brand Operations, had previously been brand director-North America Pet Care. P&G divested that business to Mars in August. She’s been transitioning into the media role under Jodi Allen, former VP-North America Brand Operations. Ms. Allen has been overseeing North American media directly following departure of P&G’s former top media executive Julie Eddleman to Google last year.

Ms. Allen became VP-North American Hair Care late last year and was handling both jobs for a time. That transition is now complete, a P&G spokeswoman said. Staffing and duties of the North American Brand Operations group have been reduced considerably following a reorganization last year that shifted much of the group’s duties to the brand groups in P&G’s global business units.

Stardust Hands by Daniele Buetti

W+K Amsterdam Unveils ‘Booking Now’ for Booking.com

W+K Amsterdam has launched an integrated campaign for Booking.com introducing the Booking Now app.

In a series of four 30-second spots which begin airing this Sunday, W+K Amsterdam borrows a trick from “Ship My Pants,” ending each ad with the almost-expletive filled, “The right room, right booking now,” in suggestive circumstances. Each spot presents a comical scenario where immediate booking is a necessity. In “Dead Bed” it’s a grandmother offering up the bed where her husband died peacefully, while the similar “Race Car Bed” borrows a gag from Grandma’s Boy. “Karate” and “Interview” change things up, presenting a couple who are pleasantly surprised by their daughter’s performance at a karate competition and a woman who arrives for a job interview a full day early.

In addition to the broadcast spots, the campaign also includes cinema, OOH and digital activations.

Newcastle Actually Finds Brands to Help Pay for 'Crowdsourced' Super Bowl Ad

Newcastle Brown Ale (@Newcastle) January 16, 2015

Newcastle Brown Ale has found some takers for its “crowdsourced” Super Bowl TV ad, a regional buy during the game that will include other marketers’ logos and messaging — if they pitch in and help pay.

Sprint Teams With Walmart to Bring Share Data to Pre-Paid Industry

Sprint is the first major carrier to bring shared data to the pre-paid world, a move that may accelerate the brewing wireless battle in the low-end market.

On Saturday, Sprint, through its Virgin Mobile brand, will begin selling a contract-less family plan with its Virgin Mobile brand exclusively at Walmart. In August, the brand introduced Virgin Mobile Custom — a plan allowing families to swap text, talk and data — in partnership with Walmart. It’s scrapping that offering, but keeping the retail giant onboard.

Sprint admitted it struggled to communicate the intricacies of the customizable plan, assigning some of the blame on Walmart’s retail operations. Angela Rittgers, VP-pre-paid marketing at Sprint, explained the decision to Fierce Wireless, a trade publication:

Tinder Gets More Brand Dollars … by Testing Sex Appeal of Facial Hair

Tinder is capturing ad dollars from a large brand, but it’s not through traditional advertising.

Gillette paid the popular dating app to test the (self-serving) theory that unkempt facial hair, from stubble to full beards, wasn’t as desirable on Tinder as a clean-shaven or well-groomed face. The Procter & Gamble razor brand, working with Publicis shop MRY, is now promoting the results on a website at Shavetest.com.

Tinder was compensated for its role, but Gillete doesn’t appear to have purchased traditional ad inventory on the platform. Instead it is pushing the results through a website and YouTube video.

W+K, AKQA Amsterdam Start Great Things for Netflix

The Amsterdam offices of Wieden+Kennedy and AQKA recently launched a new campaign to promote client Netflix in the UK, Ireland, The Netherlands and “The Nordics.”

The first spot aims to answer some of its own titular “Big Questions” with some hopeful maybes:

The second, more recent spot — first in a series of three — serves as another promo for Netflix original programming:

Future work will expand upon the “big questions” theme to reinforce the personalization available with the service. From Sean Condon of W+K Amsterdam:

“Some of the spots dramatise these moments of change in everyday situations; others tell bigger stories about how entertainment can have a profound effect on viewers’ lives – and diets. But they all build upon Netflix’s brand personality by bringing to life the brand’s fun, entertaining and unique personality through these compelling stories.”

Additional spots will launch later this month.
