FYI, Vonage Now Offers Unlimited Intergalactic Calls (Phone Home, E.T.)

Every weekday, we bring you the Ad Age/iSpot Hot Spots, new and trending TV commercials tracked by iSpot.tv, a company that catalogs, tags and measures activity around TV ads in real time. The New Releases here ran on TV for the first time yesterday. The Most Engaging ads are showing sustained social heat, ranked by SpotShare scores reflecting the percent of digital activity associated with each one over the past week. See the methodology here.

Among the new releases, Honda shows off the tech features of its latest models, while Hulu’s “Hulu Guru” celebrates the fall TV season by spouting profound(-ish) truths. And Vonage, the voice-over-IP (VoIP) telephone-service provider, reveals that it offers unlimited intergalactic calls (presumably they’re not expecting anyone to try to test that claim).

As always, you can find out more about the making of the best commercials on TV at Ad Age’s Creativity.

ECD Carstens Leaves SapientNitro Chicago

john carstensToday we confirmed, via agency contacts and Twitter, that ECD John Carstens, formerly of SapientNitro Chicago, is now a full-time freelancer.

In March 2011 we reported that Carstens had joined Sapient’s Los Angeles office after leaving Leo Burnett’s Windy City office at the beginning of the year.

Carsten’s LinkedIn page notes that he moved back to Chicago after serving as co-ECD in L.A. and that, during his time there, he tripled the size of the agency’s creative department (the office itself also underwent a significant renovation/expansion less than two years after he arrived).

Prior to joining Leo Burnett in 2008, Carstens spent time as a GCD/CD at DDB and Cramer Krasselt in Chicago; his agency history also includes stints writing copy at TBWAChiatDay L.A. and New York’s Merkley + Partners.

We currently have little information about campaigns produced during Carstens’ tenure, but here’s a link to his portfolio.

Dove: Legacy

More than ten years ago Dove started a groundbreaking conversation about real beauty in an effort to create a world where beauty is a source of confidence, not anxiety. The global beauty brand believes that everyone can make a positive impact on a girl’s self-esteem; in fact, Dove research has shown that when girls have a positive role model, they are less likely to let anxieties about their looks hold them back. Legacy spotlights how women can pass down positive feelings of beauty to a girl in their life, just in time for the 5th Annual Dove Self-Esteem Weekend taking place at the United Nations Oct. 9 – 12.

Netflix Making Four Movies With Adam Sandler

Netflix, expanding further into exclusive feature films, will produce four movies with comic actor Adam Sandler.

Mr. Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions will work with Netflix, the world’s largest subscription video service, to develop the films, according to the deal announced today. The movies will premiere only to customers in the almost 50 countries where the streaming service operates.

The accord accelerates a drive by Netflix to add its own motion pictures to an expanding lineup that includes first-run series, newer and vintage movies and TV programs, as well as documentaries and shows for kids. The company announced plans this week for its first feature film in a venture with Weinstein Co., a sequel to the Oscar-winning “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” that Netflix wants to release on IMAX screens the same day the movie becomes available for streaming. Theater owners have already protested that plan, but the Sandler movies won’t seek theatrical release.

Havas Wants You to ‘Win the Right Way’ for Chivas

Havas Worldwide, London teamed up with AnalogFolk for a new campaign promoting luxury whiskey brand Chivas’ “The Venture,” a one million dollar fund to support up-and-coming social entrepreneurs.

The campaign, entitled “Win the Right Way,” celebrates those social entrepreneurs who run their businesses in a way that benefits society, not just shareholders, and is the latest installment in the brand’s “Live With Chivalry” campaign. Havas called on the talents of actors Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave) and Liao Fan for three different ads slated for different markets, all directed by Daniel Wolfe. Isaac stars in the 60-second spot for the US market (featured above), pacing around a boxing ring while celebrating those business owners who care enough to worry about something other than profits. The campaign rolled out yesterday, with the ads, short documentaries about social entrepreneurs and a website created by AnalogFolk.

“We have always valued entrepreneurship, and generosity is at the heart of Chivas, so supporting those who use their success to create value for others feels like a natural fit,” said Richard Black, global brand director, Chivas Regal. “We are committing significant resources through The Venture to find and support the most inspiring social entrepreneurs around the world, and hope that each of those businesses will inspire other entrepreneurs to use business as a force for good, creating a growing movement with real momentum behind it.” (more…)
