FCB Presents 2015 Pan Am Games Invasion

FCB Toronto recently launched a campaign for the 2015 Pan Am Games on behalf of The Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership Corporation, centered around a 60-second broadcast spot called “Invade.”

Appropriately enough, the ad imagines Toronto invaded by hordes of athletes, who take to the city to the tune of a cover of the Delphonics “Ready or Not.” It starts innocently enough, with a lone gymnast on a rooftop. But soon a swarm of kayakers is rowing toward the city, followed by equestrian riders storming through neighborhoods, soccer players running through woods and various other groups of athletes. The spot concludes with the message “41 countries, 51 sports,” followed by the tagline “Epic is on.” The spot fits the tagline pretty perfectly, encapsulating the scope of the event in a well-shot, jam-packed 60-seconds that gets more and  more frantic leading up to its conclusion.  (more…)

How Did Google Get a Street View of the Arabian Desert? Well, First It Got This Camel

You’re lost somewhere on the planet and freaked out for a second. But then, you remember. Uncle Google can lead you home. Or can he? What if you’re in the Arabian desert?

Well, now you’re in luck. Google strapped its Trekker camera to the lovely hump of a 10-year-old camel named Raffia and went and mapped the Liwa Oasis area of Abu Dhabi—and documented the journey in the video below.

So now, if you’re in Liwa and your phone has service, you can get your bearings. Or you can just check it out from the comfort of your couch.

Take a look at this fascinating clip of a camel making history.

Mozilla to Ad World: Start Respecting the User

Mozilla has a message for the advertising industry: Start respecting the user or face a backlash.

The technology company best known for its Firefox web browser is starting to sell ads of its own, and it doesn’t like what it’s seeing.

“You see all these things about optimization and data and about real time and all the chatter about brands wanting to own their users and the technology that has helped the process — but nowhere in these halls, or very little, have we heard anything about putting the user first.” said Darren Herman, Mozilla VP content services, in a conversation which began at DMexco and carried through Advertising Week earlier this month.

Hey, It's Just a Number

Category: Up Your Game
Summary: I’m frustrated by the people that feel influence is a system that can be gamed or faked. All too often I see people who want to learn how to inflate their social media numbers or the amount of social recognition they receive without really thinking about why they want it.

Some entrepreneurs will tell you yes, there are ways that you can increase your influence by playing the game, but I’ll be honest — that’s not for me.

From McDonald's to Fendi: How a Few Brands Were Swept Into the Hong Kong Protests

Umbrellas and yellow ribbons are the big symbols of the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong. But brands have also gotten roped in, with their names and products associated with the demonstrations as well.

Why did protesters put a noose on an Ikea plush toy and hang it from a bridge? Why is the world’s largest jewelry brand doing damage control? And what was up with McDonald’s — why were the Hong Kong protesters lovin’ it? (Obviously, global fast food conglomerates are not usually held dear by Occupy protesters.)

Here’s a look at how a few brands have been popping up in the protests.

What Really Makes a Digital Ad 'Premium?'

The definition of “premium” depends on whom you ask.

For some, premium simply means quality inventory — ads appearing on well-known, brand-safe websites, ideally on home pages and “above the fold.”

For others, it’s all about a compelling creative format that grabs attention and engages audiences (no banners or buttons need apply).
