Pop Culture Illustrations by Andy Fairhurst

W+K Portland Launches ‘Never Finished’ for Nike, Starring Richard Sherman

W+K Portland got Richard Sherman to star in its new spot “Never Finished” for Nike, following on the heels of Sherman’s recent appearances for Neff earlier this month and Campbell’s in August.

The new spot deals with the hype train surrounding Sherman, as he is constantly bombarded with media discussions of whether or not he is “the best.” “Never Finished” does a good job at finding humor in the situation, aided by a believably exasperated Sherman. The highlight is probably the made for TV biopic, starring Damon Wayans Jr.

Sherman’s roles in ads so far have mostly seen the Seahawks star not taking himself seriously and playing with his public persona. That definitely continues with “Never Finished,” but the schtick is much less over the top than some of his past roles, and the more nuanced characterization fits Sherman well as the spot, more than anything, mocks the media hype that surrounds star players. It makes for an entertaining ad, and Sherman’s most enjoyable performance by far.

The campaign, which runs until October 9th, also includes five additional videos, with special cameos from Johnny Manziel, Victor Cruz, Ndamukong Suh and Ken Griffey Jr.

Discovery Takes Control of Hub Network, Will Give Namesake Brand

Discovery Communications acquired the control of The Hub from partner Hasbro and will rename the children’s TV network Discovery Family Channel as it looks to broaden its family and children’s programming.

Discovery’s stake has increased to 60% from 50%, while Hasbro’s had dropped to 40%, the companies said in a regulatory filing today. Hasbro received a $64.4 million cash payment from Discovery under the reorganization.

Discovery Family Channel, which will debut on Oct. 13, will offer kids shows including “My Little Pony” and “Transformers” during the day. Prime-time viewers can watch family programming more in the Discovery vein, such as “Flying Wild Alaska” and “Biggest Reveals,” Discovery said. Tonight’s Hub lineup, by comparison, includes reruns of the sitcom “Step by Step” and the 1991 kids’ movie “Problem Child 2.”

Tech Marketing Budgets to Increase 3.5% This Year

Rebounding after several sluggish years, marketing budgets at technology companies will be up an average 3.5% this year over last year, and marketing revenue will be up an average 3.7%, according to an International Data Corp. study released today.

IDC’s twelfth annual “Tech Marketing Benchmark Study” was based on a survey of 101 senior marketers at technology companies, with average revenue of $7.7 billion, conducted in the third quarter.

“This is the first time in eight years — since before the recession — that we have seen marketing budgets rising at the same rate of increase as marketing revenue,” said Rich Vancil, group VP-executive advisory group at IDC.
