Remembering Publishing Great John Mack Carter

John Mack Carter, one of the industry’s most influential magazine editors and the longtime voice of McCall’s, Ladies’ Home Journal and Good Housekeeping, has died at 86 following a long battle with Parkinson’s. Mr. Carter was the only person in publishing history to helm all three titles.

Mr. Carter played a major role in launching Country Living, Victoria, SmartMoney and Marie Claire, but was mainly associated with women’s magazines. In the early 1970s, he made headlines when women stormed his office at LHJ and held him hostage for 11 hours as they demanded changes in the publication. The experience helped change the magazine’s editorial direction and Mr. Carter remained an advocate for women for the remainder of his career.

Over his six decades in publishing, he achieved many milestones, including blazing a trail by first putting celebrities on the cover of Good Housekeeping. He was inducted into the American Society of Magazine Editors Hall of Fame in 2000 and was president of the organization from 1990-1992. Gilbert C. Maurer, director and former Hearst chief operating officer, recalled Mr. Carter’s “knack for perceiving unfilled needs in the marketplace was uncanny. And no one ever wrote a better cover line.”

The Grand Budapest Hotel Paper Art

DDB Does Mom/Dad Humor for Breyers

As if we needed further proof that 90?s-style R&B is history’s most resilient genre (even when performed by painfully white people), here’s a little skit created by DDB to position client Breyers’ gelato as the kind of naughty treat that mature adults indulge in when the kids aren’t watching.

In order to remind everyone how silly the idea of gelato as a vice really is, the copywriters made sure to point out the inanity of the sad pleasures that parents (apparently) allow themselves to enjoy: HBO and a frozen dessert that contains about 35 percent of the fat of, you know, the real stuff.

McCann Exec and 'Breck Girl' Eileen McKenna Dies

Eileen McKenna, an avertising executive whose career spanned agencies such as Wells Rich Green and McCann, New York, died from cancer last week at her home in Greenwich Conn. She was 61. Ms. McKenna was also a child actress famous for her appearance in the first spot for the Xerox 914 copier.

Ms. McKenna began her career in advertising at a young age. She appeared in several commercials and TV shows in the early days of TV, making history with the Xerox ad; she was also the first child to be featured in the “Breck Girl” campaign that ran for more than 40 years and won “Breck Girl of the Year” honors. Both classic campaigns are featured at the Smithsonian Museum of American History.

In her adult life, Ms. McKenna went on to work as an account supervisor at Wells Rich Greene. In her 2002 autobiography, “A Big Life (in Advertising),” Mary Wells Lawrence referred to Ms. McKenna as “the absolute best” for her work on the TWA account. Most recently she worked as a senior account manager at McCann New York, primarily on L’Oreal, where she mentored young people beginning their careers in advertising.
