Ricky Gervais Jumps into Netflix Originals for Emmy Spot

Netflix rolled out a new broadcast spot featuring Ricky Gervais to promote its original series during the Emmy’s last night (for which Netflix original series were nominated for 31 awards). It’s unclear at the moment which agency is responsible for the 60-second “Superfan,” but we can confirm that it was not Deutsch, who have worked with Netflix in the past.

In the spot, Gervais asks “You know when you’re watching your favorite Netflix show and after five straight episodes, you want to be in it?” He then imagines himself in starring roles of Netflix original series including House of CardsOrange is the New Black, and Lilyhammer. Gervais interacts with other actors from the shows, on real sets, adding to the feeling that he’s actually leaped into each show’s respective universe. It’s a fun premise, and with Gervais, himself a star of Netflix original Derek, it should be a recipe for success. But somehow the spot never finds its comic footing and falls kind of flat. Stick around for outtakes after the jump, including, of course, Gervais laughing uncontrollably. (more…)

John Malkovich Makes a Pretty Damn Good Vampire in This Fun French Ad

John Malkovich plays a vampire in this amusing, cinematic spot from Buzzman promoting French streaming video service Canal Play. His character is also a bank manager. The fangs work either way.

You don’t need to understand French to get the message: This toothy dude loves movies and TV shows, and Canal Play delivers them via mobile or desktop.

The Oscar-nominated actor’s bald pate, pale complexion and powerful yet goofy presence lend themselves well to his prince of darkness portrayal, though he seems to have no qualms about stalking around in broad daylight. What joie de vivre! Or perhaps, joie de la mort!

His résumé includes Shadow of the Vampire, an art-house/horror hybrid from more than a decade ago, though he didn’t play a Nosferatu in that one.

Canal properties have produced some notable ads, most famously “The Bear,” a 2012 Cannes Grand Prix winner from BETC. The new 90-second spot doesn’t quite rise to those comic heights. Still, a campy script, glossy effects and the star’s idiosyncratic turn really bring this sucker to life.

How Brands Can Remain Human When Native and Ad Tech Collide

John Oliver gave a blistering rant on native ads earlier this month on his HBO program, “This Week Tonight.” He equated the lowering of editorial’s long-held barrier with advertising departments to a surgeon ripping a patient’s heart out and thinking it doesn’t matter — that readers’ trust in their news source is, in fact, all that matters. I can only imagine what he’d think if he knew that native advertising is now being discussed as moving toward a programmatic model.

I believe that native ads and content marketing will never be bought 100% programmatically — there are too many nuances to ensuring that content and the publication align. Humans will always play a role.

When it comes to native ads, I see the primary challenge coming from aligning branded content with a specific publication, and feeding back data to brands that allow them to adjust what they create over time.

WPP Earnings Whacked by Sterling's Strength

Results at WPP, the world’s largest agency holding company by revenue, were hit by the strength of the British sterling and CEO Martin Sorrell indicated the company was looking to cut costs through back-office consolidation.

WPP reported revenues climbed 2.7% to $9 billion in the first six months of 2014, with pre-tax profits up 1.5% to $813 million. Profits attributable to shareholders rose 30% from a year earlier to $605 million.

The strength of the pound had a big impact on the British communications giant’s results. Billings, for example, were down 3% to $55 billion, but would have increased 5.7% without the effect of exchange rates and revenues would have been up by 11.3%, the group claimed.

Pinterest Gives Marketers Analytics to Make the Case for Brand Budgets

A few months after formally rolling out ads, Pinterest is giving marketers a better idea of how to spend their money on the social scrapbooking service.

Pinterest has updated its free analytics tool for businesses to offer new details about brands’ audiences there, including where they live, what topics and other brands they’re interested in and what level of traffic Pinterest is driving to their sites. That is the type of information that a marketer would want available when deciding how much of a brand’s budget to dedicate to the social network.

Starting on Tuesday, any business across 31 languages can check out aggregated, anonymized information about their brands’ Pinterest followings. Beyond data on audiences’ interests and the other companies they follow, the new information includes gender, location and the devices people are using to pin sites’ content.

Turner Offers Staff Buyouts but Says Cuts Won't Stop There

Time Warner’s Turner Broadcasting division offered voluntary buyouts to employees in a memo on Tuesday morning, following through on growing hints from executives grappling with a ratings slide.

Voluntary buyouts will be offered to employees who are at least 55 and have been with the company at least 10 years as of Dec. 31, 2014, excluding on-air talent and employees covered by a written employment contract. That group comprises about 600 employees, who will receive emails detailing the offer.

Layoffs are expected to follow the voluntary buyouts at Turner, whose networks include TNT, TBS and CNN.

Netflix Shut Out At Primetime Emmys While Broadcast Holds On

For all the talk about how broadcasters are merely bystanders in this “Golden Age” of TV, it was Netflix who was sitting on the sidelines during the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards Monday night.

The streaming video platform, which was nominated for 31 Emmys across the Creative Arts ceremony Saturday and the more prestigious Primetime awards, was shut out of the top honors last night.

Netflix did take home several awards during the Creative Arts ceremony on Saturday, including best guest actress in a comedy series for Uzo Abuda’s portrayal of Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren in “Orange is the New Black.” But it failed to win any of the honors during the main show last night.

Networking: Be Dr. Jekyll, Not Hyde

Category: Career Oxygen
Summary: Networking is the oxygen of the connected economy. It is the currency of consumer collaboration. Unless you are a monk, getting through life in the 21st century is a challenge at best if you have no network. Virtually every job today is gained through the network. If you are selling storage, soup, semiconductors, software, soap, or self, you require relationships and relationship building skills.
