Hall of Fame Copywriter Julian Koenig Dies at 93


A creative force behind some of advertising’s greatest campaigns, Julian Koenig, has died at the age of 93.

Mr. Koenig is the sixth person to be inducted into the Copywriting Hall of Fame, in 1966 joining luminaries such as David Ogilvy, Bill Bernbach and Leo Burnett. He is widely credited with creating Volkswagen’s “Lemon” and “Think Small” campaigns, the latter of which was named by Ad Age as the top ad of the 20th Century. Mr. Koenig “is a writer of friendly, free-from-bombast ads and declarative sentences,” wrote Ad Age’s former Editor Fred Danzig of Mr. Koenig at the time of his induction.

The copywriter might not have ended up in advertising had he not been thrown out of Columbia Law school following his graduation from Dartmouth in 1941. Five years later, Mr. Koenig joined the Freund Agency, where he was hired for $21.50 a week. He agitated for a raise to $35, and when it came through decided to up the ante to $60 a week, he told Ad Age in 1982. “Freund reviewed my work and said my radio wasn’t good, my print wasn’t and I had no future,” recalled Mr. Koenig in that story.

NORTH Signs New CD; Tech VP Leaves DigitasLBI

Portland’s NORTH has hired Eric Samsel as its newest Creative Director. Prior to joining North, Samsel was a copywriter at W+K Portland for more than eight years, working on clients as diverse as Jeep, EA Sports, Coca-Cola and Nike (for which the shop won a Webby).

Samsel started his ad career at Portland’s JohnsonSheen. In his new role, he will handle work on existing campaigns for car-rack brand Yakima, outdoor gear maker Stanley and Anchor Brewing. Managing Director Rebecca Armstrong writes:

“With more than 16 years of experience in outdoor lifestyle brands, Eric’s experience makes him a perfect match for one of our core practices… Plus he is an exceptionally talented writer and a really nice bloke.”

Samsel will report to CCO Mark Ray.

In other agency people news, we can confirm that DigitasLBI VP/Director of Tech Jeff Kean will soon leave the agency for a spot on the roster of Omnicom’s CriticalMass. No word on details regarding his new position.

When An Agency/Client Relationship Goes Publicly Stale

When Cramer-Krasselt decided to publicly break up with client Panera Bread last week, they were quite definitive about labeling the client as difficult. I saw two reactions to this: “Good for C-K,” and “They’re just doing this as a PR stunt, who’d want to hire them?”

Frankly, many clients have rightfully earned a reputation for being difficult. Just like people in business have a reputation for being a-holes or some agencies have reputation for being sweatshops or prima donnas. Clients put their accounts in review faster than ever and public comments are often made. These days, reputations aren’t secret, and there are even websites where you can rate agencies, corporations, even people. So for both agencies and clients, reputation management is needed both proactively and for CYA purposes if something goes south.

Rarely, though, do ad agencies willingly walk away from accounts and usually there are only a handful of senior managers at an agency willing or empowered to make that call. More often than not, rank-and-file people — the account executives, project managers, and creatives — have to suck it up and do the work even if the clients is unreasonably difficult and demanding. Incidentally, they’re the ones in the agency who often know what is working, and not working, in the agency/client relationship long before senior management knows. Being closer to the day-to-day work makes the red flags all the more apparent.

It truly is a tale of two cities. The lower wards are still — yes, still — trying to recover from Katrina. However, if you stroll down Bourbon, Canal, Freret, and Frenchmen (mark it down), it is arguably the best French Quarter ever.

The New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation (That’s CVB to you and me) proudly lays responsibility for that rebound at the feet of 360i. The New York-based ad agency (a branch of Dentsu Inc. based in Toyko) began running the city’s tourism advertising campaigns in 2012 with much fanfare and bead-throwing.

Every weekday, we bring you the Ad Age/iSpot Hot Spots, new and trending TV commercials tracked by iSpot.tv, a company that catalogs, tags and measures activity around TV ads in real time. The New Releases ran on TV for the first time yesterday or overnight (i.e., before dawn this morning; we’ve extended the “harvest” window for today’s post because Tuesdays tend to be slow days for new commercial releases from big brands). The Most Engaging ads are showing sustained social heat, ranked by SpotShare scores reflecting the percent of digital activity associated with each one over the past week. See the methodology here.

Among the new releases, Clear Eyes offers an outdoor-themed version of its long-running campaign starring Vanessa Williams, while Dish Network serves up a subtitled, World Cup-themed spot to promote the “watch anywhere” functionality of its Hopper system. What Does Trademark Decision Actually Mean for Redskins Brand?


The controversial Washington Redskins brand inched a little closer to the ash heap.

Ruling the NFL team’s “Redskins” nickname is “disparaging of Native Americans,” the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office canceled the team’s federal trademarks on Wednesday.

Native American groups have been running protest ad campaigns to pressure Redskins team owner Dan Snyder (the billionaire founder of Snyder Communications) to change the nickname. The most recent push came from the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation, which ran a high-profile ad in major markets during the NBA Finals.

Pharrell's 24-Hour 'Happy' Video, Chipotle's 'The Scarecrow' and Volvo's 'Live Tests' Take Cyber Grand Prix at Cannes


Three campaigns rose to the top of Cannes’ Cyber category in 2014: the 24-hour music video for Pharrell’s massively popular track “Happy,” created out of Iconoclast, Paris; Chipotle’s “The Scarecrow” integrated campaign from CAA Marketing and, not surprisingly, Volvo’s “Live Test” online films promoting the brand’s trucks, created out of Swedish agency Forsman & Bodenfors.

What won: The jury has the option to award up to three Grand Prix a year in the categories of Cyber Craft, The Web; Branded Games/Branded Tech; Integrated Multi-Platform Campaign and Social.

Pharrell’s music video took the top prize in the first category. The music video is a 24-hour interactive sequence showing Pharrell, and 300 people — famous, and not so much — dancing around Los Angeles to the popular tune over the course of a day. It was directed by We Are from L.A., produced out of Iconoclast and creative directed by Yoann Lemoine.

Acura Signs Deal With the Tiger Woods Foundation


American Honda’s Acura division has signed a three-year agreement to support the Tiger Woods Foundation and three related golf tournaments associated with the star golfer’s educational efforts.

Acura also will be named the official vehicle of the foundation in exchange for vehicle and philanthropic support. The dollar amount of support was not disclosed.

The first presence of Acura and 180 vehicles for tournament use will be at the 2014 Quicken Loans National Tournament, taking place next weekend at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md. Acura also will have a presence at the foundation’s Deutsche Bank Championship Aug. 27-Sept. 1 in Norton, Mass.; and at the World Challenge, to be held Dec. 1-7 in Windermere, Fla.
