RPA Debuts New Work for Honda

RPA has two new spots for Honda that highlight the features and competitive advantages of Honda’s two core vehicles — the Accord and the Civic — continuing the “Start Something Special” tagline introduced last September.

While the copy is a relatively straightforward rundown of features and what sets Honda apart from the competition, the footage was a bit more complicated to capture. The spots use “a complex camera technique called parallax, whereby the camera and scenery are moved in such a way that the car appears to be moving when in actuality it’s standing still.” The Accord spot, for example, was filmed in one single shot, with the last take being the one used in the ad. All effects were done in camera, with elaborate lighting and choreography used to simulate different locations within the spot. RPA collaborated with production company Reset to create the desired effect. Stick around for credits and “Lydia’s Civic” after the jump. continued…

Vacation in Paris Now or You Will Die Alone and Full of Regrets, Says Expedia

Don’t skip your trip to Paris. The love of your life is waiting there, says Expedia.

In this new ad from Expedia Mexico, the online travel agency tells a simple story about buying plane tickets and having a meaningful life, from the perspective of an old woman looking back on the roots and fruits of her international romance.

In the end, alas, regret prevails.

It’s something of a bold move for any brand, especially a tech-driven brand, to tackle themes of Parisian love, given Google’s masterpiece on the subject. But Expedia’s ad is pleasant enough, if in an ominous and convoluted sort of way.

Because nothing sells vacations like telling consumers they will die alone if they make the wrong choice.

CBS, NBC, Fox Start Making Ad Deals as TV Upfront Comes to Life

After what has been a quiet few weeks following broadcaster’s presentations, the upfront marketplace is finally starting to move.

NBC, Fox and CBS have started securing ad commitments as part of this year’s upfront negotiations for ad time in the approaching TV season, according to people familiar with negotiations.

The pace suddenly appears to be moving quickly, with NBC moving through the market “briskly,” the people said.

Google Looks Beyond YouTube For Video Ad Dollars

Google has a new message for premium publishers: “Hey, let us help you sell your video ads.”

Google has created a new ad-buying program for premium publishers to automate their video ad sales in a bid to expand their video business beyond YouTube.

The company already helps some publishers manage the sale of their video ads, but this new program called Partner Select aims to centralize some of that work into a video marketplace in a bid to persuade publishers and advertisers to consolidate more of their digital video sales and buys with the search giant.

Bribery Probe for Chinese State TV Exec Who Slammed Apple, McDonald's

As the head of China’s state-owned CCTV financial channel, Guo Zhenxi oversaw an annual show notorious for accusing foreign companies — including Apple, McDonald’s and Volkswagen — of mistreating Chinese consumers.

Less well-known outside China is that Mr. Guo’s programs tackled Chinese companies, too. He infuriated several high-profile Chinese entrepreneurs, and one real estate developer complained to his millions of followers on social media that the state broadcaster was “the dumbest pig on earth.”

Now the tables have turned on Mr. Guo, a CCTV official for two decades: He has been detained and is being investigated for suspected bribery. And though some on the mainland saw his program’s attacks on foreign companies as a patriotic defense of Chinese consumers, he also had powerful enemies inside China.
