Suggestive Klondike TV Ad Gives New Meaning To Food Porn

Klondike has launched a new ice cream bar. And to support the line extension, the brand is using a little candy porn. Or at least that’s the suggestion in a new ad.

The campaign for the bars, dubbed Klondike Kandy Bars, is called “The Best Ice Cream Bar Ever Conceived,” and features an animated TV spot whose plotline seems ripped from a 1970s porn flick, complete with a bow-chicka-bow-wow soundtrack.

A candy bar “nurse” tends to an original Klondike bar “patient” and, well, the suggestion is obvious about what happens next. As the ad ends, it turns out that the steamy scene is the fantasy of man shopping for ice cream bars.

ESPN Expects Brazil World Cup to ‘Significantly’ Outpace South Africa

ESPN is seeing significantly higher ad sales for June’s 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil vs. four years ago, according to Ed Erhardt, ESPN’s president of global customer marketing and sales.

Mr. Erhardt expects ESPN to post “significantly greater” ad sales for the Brazil World Cup from June 12-July 13 than it did for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa.

Despite the protests and violence in Brazil that have made some advertisers jittery about the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics, he said ESPN is writing strong business.

Another Chinese Counterfeit Product: Social-Media Followers

Weibo, which says it has 129.1 million monthly active users and that it is committed to fighting faux accounts, hasn’t given an estimate of how many there are.

New questions are being raised about how many Weibo accounts are real and truly active, and about how the platform should define active use. A professor at the University of Hong Kong recently found that 10.4 million Weibo users were responsible for around 94% of all messages, while other users just re-shared those messages or never posted anything, according to an article in the South China Morning Post this week.

Beyond fake fans, Weibo has another problem: China’s government has cracked down on influential, free-speaking microbloggers, scaring some users away from the platform and onto WeChat, a mobile app that gives a sense of greater privacy.

Adland’s Minority Leadership Problem: A Call for the ‘Uncomfortable’ Questions

Coca-Cola’s multilingual “America the Beautiful” spot is courageous beyond belief. And the recent AdAge feature story, “Ad Campaigns Are Finally Reflecting Diversity of U.S.” demonstrates a general trend of progress in creative work. But unfortunately, when we hold up the cultural messages of the Coke spot and the AdAge story as mirrors against the agency landscape, the results still aren’t pretty.

This is an overwhelmingly white industry in an America that’s increasingly multi-racial. The census tells us there are now 116 million non-white Americans — about the same number of people as the combined populations of France and Spain. So let me ask a question that’s bound to make some uncomfortable: How many non-white executives are on your agency’s leadership team? How many have there ever been, in the history of your agency? If you’re at an agency with more than 100 people and the answer is zero, I have a follow-up question: Seriously?

The problem here isn’t intent. For years, we’ve created committees, launched HR initiatives, held panel discussions — all intended to make agencies less racially stratified. But most of this activity seems to have had little effect. As Ken Wheaton wrote in an Ad Age piece in 2012 (citing survey data from Tangerine-Watson), 74% of minorities in the industry feel “My experience as an employee from a multicultural background is different from my colleagues.” This suggests that minorities at agencies feel isolated, feel they have less access and connection to senior agency leadership, and suffer through a sense of silent uneasiness.

Stores Sell Out of ‘Frozen’ Princess Elsa Dress

Aaryn Costello is searching for the perfect dress, a 30-inch-long light-blue number with a sparkly bodice and a detachable white cape.

That would be the Princess Elsa dress from the Walt Disney Co. hit “Frozen,” the most sought-after fashion item among the kindergarten set. Stores across the U.S. are sold out, and originals are being offered for as much as $1,600 on EBay. Desperate parents are sewing their own or shelling out up to $225 for replicas on craft sites like Etsy.com.

“Every mom in the world is dying for this dress,” said Ms. Costello, a Los Angeles marketing consultant with a “Frozen” obsessed 4-year-old. “The lucky moms who have found this dress for their daughters brag about their success and unanimously proclaim how their kid can’t stop wearing it.”
