Pitney Bowes Hopes Rebrand Will Move Image Beyond Mail

Pitney Bowes has hired FutureBrand and DigitasLBi to help show the world it is more than just a mailing and shipping services company — an image it has had for nearly a century.

The company turns 94 on April 23, at which time it plans to announce efforts to reposition the company’s brand, as well as update its digital presence, tasks FutureBrand and DigitasLBi will take on respectively. The results of their collective efforts will likely not be seen until the fourth quarter of this year, but the company has high hopes for the work the agencies will do.

According to Bill Borrelle, senior VP-brand strategy and integrated marketing communications, a rebranding is long overdue.

Legal Experts Expect Supreme Court Will Rule in Favor of Pom

The Supreme Court spent about an hour on Monday listening to arguments from Pom Wonderful and Coca-Cola in a case that could have far-reaching implications for food and beverage marketers.

Several legal experts interviewed by Ad Age said they expect the Supreme Court will rule in favor of Pom, which is seeking approval to challenge Coca-Cola’s labeling using the Lanham Act, a federal law businesses use when suing each other over false ad claims. If Pom wins, the pomegranate juice brand will have the opportunity to argue that Coca-Cola has misled consumers with a “pomegranate blueberry” product that contains 0.3% pomegranate juice and 0.2% blueberry juice. A decision is expected in June.

“It seems quite obvious that the court is highly skeptical of Coca-Cola’s arguments,” said Robert Bader, an attorney with Goodwin Procter. “There’s an overriding distaste for the fact that, at least from their perspective, the label on the juice is false, misleading. … It would be hard for them to say, ‘Pom, your claims can not go forward,’ when the label is in their eyes, and in the eyes of most in the public, misleading.”

Look at Your Phone During TV Ads? Expect to See the Same Messages There

Instead of going to the bathroom or grabbing a beer during commercial breaks, TV watchers are increasingly turning to a new ritual: checking their phones until the show resumes.

For advertisers paying top dollar for TV ads, the trend is frustrating, presenting yet another challenge in their quest to gain a share of consumers’ fragmented attention.

But Xaxis, the WPP-owned programmatic platform, believes it’s found a way to reach these distracted consumers. The company is introducing a product called “Sync,” which will give advertisers the ability to serve ads on TV watchers’ mobile devices while their TV screens air the corresponding commercials.
