social_media_quick_guide_brand.jpg

Using social media to build brand awareness is a primary goal of most social media marketers. Hundreds of millions of people are talking, learning and engaging through social media channels. If you don’t have a presence in social media, your company is missing what’s become a fundamental communication channel in the marketing mix.

It’s arguable that there isn’t a single company or organization that doesn’t have brand awareness as one of its core organizational goals. Social media has quickly become one the best ways to reach large audiences who are hungry for information and conversation. For professional communicators, having social media as a tool in the arsenal for building brand awareness is no longer a nice to have. It’s a must have.

Starbucks Ordered to Pay $2.7 Billion in Dispute with Kraft

Starbucks has lost big in its dispute with Kraft over how its packaged coffee was marketed in grocery stores.

An independent arbitrator ruled Tuesday that the coffee giant must pay $2.7 billion in cash for “improper termination” of a distribution deal that ended two years ago amid finger pointing by the two corporate giants, according to a statement from Mondelez International. Mondelez was formed when Kraft Foods split into two companies in October 2012 and will get the cash award as a result of its separation agreement from Kraft Foods Group.

“We’re pleased that the arbitrator validated our position that Starbucks breached our successful and long-standing contractual relationship without proper compensation,” Gerd Pleuhs, exec VP for legal affairs and general counsel of Mondelez International, said in the statement.

Olson Takes on Supercuts

Supercuts-Store003-1024x805

After recently parting ways with DDB Chicago , which absorbed the account once Element 79 folded, hair salon chain Supercuts has found a new agency of record in Minneapolis-based agency Olson, which we have to say is on somewhat of a tear as this marks its sixth AOR win in two months’ time following winning the likes of Sharp and Commerce Bank. Olson’s AOR assignment will include a national broadcast and digital campaign, as well as a social-media effort.

Robin Beddor,  Supercuts senior director of brand and marketing states about her company’s decision, “Olson’s broadcast capabilities impressed us, but they won us over by demonstrating an ability to seamlessly bring their ideas to life across digital channels as well. They married top-notch strategy with real expertise in a broad range of marketing disciplines that will help us connect with our guests in an impactful way.” Along with the AOR duties for Supercuts, we’ve been told that Olson has also picked up social/PR work for Cabela’s and Cars.com.

How Unilever Topped The Awards Report Chart

When Keith Weed stepped into his job as Unilever’s chief marketing and communications officer in 2010, the company had just been named Advertiser of the Year at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival. But within a year, Unilever’s award tallies slipped and by 2012 Unilever came in eighth overall in our Award Report rankings for campaigns like Dove “Real Beauty Sketches” and Ragu’s “Long Days of Childhood.”

Mr. Weed was determined to do something about that fall. And he’s clearly delivered; this year Unilever is sitting pretty at the top of our list. More surprisingly, Mr. Weed managed this feat while stepping up copy testing and restraining agency and production fees.

Part of the success, he said, stems from Unilever’s goal of doubling sales and increasing positive social impact while halving its environmental impact, which has inspired and motivated its ranks. The company has also boosted internal creativity by training 80% of its 6,500 marketers on his “Crafting Brands for Life” strategy.
