NBC Delays Biggest TV Shows to Avoid Repeats


NBC is delaying the return of two of its most popular shows until March so that it can air only new episodes for the remainder of the season.

“Revolution” returns March 25 and “Grimm” restarts on March 8, allowing the series to avoid repeats, NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt said Sunday at a TV critics conference in Pasadena, Calif. The next season of “The Voice” also begins on March 25.

NBC, part of Comcast, was the only broadcast television network to increase its audience in the first half of the season that began in September. Those viewership gains, provided by “Sunday Night Football,” “The Voice” and “Revolution,” will be a challenge to continue through the second half of the TV season that kicks off this week and NBC’s strategy is to provide producers more time to better develop the programs, Mr. Greenblatt said.

Infographic Explains What We Already Know: People Distrust Ads

A new infographic produced by market researcher Lab42 reveals a stunning discovery; 76 percent of people think ads are somewhat or very exaggerated. Well slap me upside the head with an SRDS book. Who knew?

In other stunning findings, 96 percent of the 500 folks Lab42 surveyed believe half or more of all weight loss ads are photoshopped. Bet this makes Jessica Simpson pretty angry.

While it’s obvious the majority of people distrust advertising, just 17 percent wish there were more laws to regulate advertising. Guess everyone’s fine with being duped.

Oh and when it comes to types of ads that make a product memorable, eight percent approve of the sex sells approach. Unsurprisingly, 92 percent of that eight percent were men. Men do love their sex.

But humor trumps all with 71 percent of respondents stating a funny ad makes them more likely to remember a product.

Of course, this is a study of what kind of advertising people SAY influences them; not a study of what ACTUALLY influences them. Apples and oranges, people. Apples and oranges.

Airport Bag Tags Form Expedia Campaign

Some ad campaigns are developed based on sound insight and detailed research. Others rely on “the big idea.” Both approaches have merit. Sitting squarely in the “big idea” category is this brilliant new campaign from Ogilvy for Expedia which combined airport IATA codes (the three letter tags they put on your checked bags) into words and phrases.

Of the campaign’s genesis, creative team members Jon Morgan and Mike Watson told Creative Review “It all started when we saw a woman walking through Heathrow with the word FUK hanging from her suitcase. Turned out she’d just flown in from Fukuoka in Japan. That got us thinking, ‘maybe there are more’.”

Using IATA codes from over 9,000 airports around the world, the team selected codes that created half-words and almost-words/phrases such as “SUN SEA SND SEX from airports Sun Valley, Seattle, Seno and Sernbach and WSH EWE WRE ERE from airports Brookhaven, Ewer Indonesia, Whangarei and Erave.

Nine iterations have run so far and more are planned leading up to summer.
