Poll: Obama Wins Debate, but Last Week’s Win Didn’t Help Much

One way to tell if snap polls deemed President Barack Obama the winner of a debate against Mitt Romney: Whether the results are posted on Drudge, one of my first web stops every morning. Three weeks ago, they were. This morning, they weren’t.

According to a CBS poll of 500 voters, 53% “gave the foreign policy-themed debate to Mr. Obama; 23% said Romney won, and 24% felt the debate was a tie.” A CNN/ORC poll found that 48% went for Mr. Obama and 40% went for Mr. Romney.

Interestingly, CNN reports that “half of those questioned say that the debate did not affect how they would vote.” Perhaps it’s a matter of the much-vaunted “undecided” voter being overhyped. Or perhaps, at this point, even they have made up their minds. Mr. Obama was deemed the winner of last week’s townhall-style debate, yet that didn’t seem to gain him much ground in polls conducted since then. Many give Mr. Romney an edge nationally. Keep in mind, however, that the election will be decided on a state-by-state basis and while Mr. Romney has gained ground in some key swing states — taking the lead in Florida, for example — Mr. Obama is still ahead in others.

Where Are TV and Video Advertising Headed? My 10 Bets for 2020

Dave Morgan

At a small industry event last week, I led a talk about the future of TV and video advertising in the U.S. over the next five to 10 years. Rather than just talking about emerging trends and leaving it there, I decided to offer up some specific predictions. As a startup guy, my job is to make bets and try to build businesses in advance of markets, or at least contemporaneously to their development. While it can be a bit perilous to go public with predictions, it can also be fun, so here are my “bets” on what the world of TV and video advertising will look in 2020:

What to Expect From Facebook’s Earnings Today: Slower Growth

Facebook is set to post another quarter of slowing revenue growth after struggling to wring money from advertisers seeking to connect with users of mobile devices.

In the second earnings report since its May initial public offering, the company may say third-quarter sales rose 29% from a year earlier to $1.23 billion, the average of analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg. That’s less than the 32% year-over-year rise it posted in the second quarter and a 45% gain from a year earlier in the first quarter.

Facebook reports earnings today after U.S. markets close. The company has lost more than $40 billion in market value since its May 17 IPO, when it sold shares at $38 apiece, or 107 times trailing 12-month earnings — a price that made it more expensive than 99% of all Standard & Poor’s 500 Index companies at the time.

Hacking Lawsuits Spread Beyond News Corp. for the First Time

Trinity Mirror, publisher of the Daily Mirror and the Sunday Mirror tabloids in Britain, was sued over claims journalists hacked phones to get stories, the first time such civil litigation has spread beyond News Corp.

The lawsuits were filed yesterday in London, Mark Lewis, who’s representing alleged victims including former England soccer manager Sven-Goran Eriksson and actor Shobna Gulati, said in an e-mail. The cases are the first against a publisher other than News Corp.’s U.K. unit, where the News of the World tabloid was closed last year by Chairman Rupert Murdoch.

Piers Morgan, who edited the Daily Mirror between 1995 and 2004 and now hosts CNN’s “Tonight” program, told an ethics inquiry triggered by the News Corp. scandal that phone hacking didn’t take place at the newspaper while he was there. A former Daily Mirror reporter later testified to the same inquiry that hacking took place on a daily basis among the newspaper’s show-business reporters.
