Heart of Coppola: Os 33 anos de “Apocalypse Now”

Há 33 anos, em 15 de agosto de 1979, estreava nos cinemas “Apocalypse Now”.

A adaptação do livro “Heart Of Darkness” de Joseph Conrad, marca, certamente, o filme mais pessoal de Francis Ford Coppola. O homem que viaja ao longo do rio entrando no coração de uma imensa escuridão poderia ser um paralelo com a história do diretor nessa época.

A vida pós dois volumes de “O Poderoso Chefão”, com “A Conversação” no meio, talvez sugerisse um caminho mais fácil, afinal, não é qualquer um que faz o maior filme de todos os tempos. Ainda que tivesse muito mais dinheiro, equipamento e prestígio, nada poderia preparar Coppola para o caos que se tornaria a produção de “Apocalypse Now”.

Filmado nas Filipinas em 1976, o set parecia ter sido atingido por uma chuva de napalm: Coppola demitiu Harvey Keitel e o substituiu por Martin Sheen, a equipe enfrentou diversas doenças tropicais, e os helicópteros emprestados para as cenas de combates eram frequentemente requisitados de volta pelo presidente local, para que assim entrassem na guerra real contra os rebeldes anti-governo.

Marlon Brando apareceu acima do peso e sem saber suas falas, Martin Sheen teve um ataque cardíaco e Coppola, como não poderia ser diferente, passou ele mesmo por vários colapsos nervosos, algumas vezes ameaçando suicídio. Para melhorar, a essa altura, nem o roteiro estava totalmente definido.

Montado pelo editor Brian Carroll, o vídeo abaixo é um remix de diversos momentos dessa jornada heróica, misturando cenas do filme com o documentário “Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse”, e Orson Welles lendo trechos do livro.

No trecho final, presente no documentário de 1991, a controversa batalha de Coppola contra a profissionalização do cinema pode soar profética. Um desejo do diretor em que, a popularização das cameras, possa transformar qualquer um em cineasta, capazes de produzir filmes verdadeiramente autorais e sem executivos no pescoço.
